Pokémon Gold and Silver are the original Game Boy-era Johto sequels; Crystal is their enhanced Game Boy Color edition. If you’re choosing a version now, Crystal is the clearest fit for its documented presentation additions and choice of protagonist, while Gold or Silver makes sense if you specifically want one of the paired original releases. The old 3DS Virtual Console versions are no longer available for new purchase through the eShop, so today’s access depends on hardware and copies you already own or can find second-hand.
What are Gold, Silver, and Crystal?
Pokémon Gold and Silver continue the first Pokémon games in the Johto region. The Pokémon Company lists their original Japanese release date as November 21, 1999, and identifies Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance as supported hardware. Nintendo describes the games as bringing a new map, story, and Pokémon relative to the earlier releases. Notable Pokémon named on the official Pokémon page include Ho-Oh, Lugia, Unown, and the roaming trio Raikou, Entei, and Suicune; that list does not mean each is exclusive to every version or encountered in the same way. Crystal is an enhanced edition built on Gold and Silver, not a later remake. Nintendo identifies the original Crystal as a Game Boy Color title. The Nintendo DS games Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver are separate, later games based on Gold and Silver’s storyline, with additional features. They are alternatives for a Johto return, but they are not the original Game Boy Color games. Nintendo: Crystal product page; Nintendo: HeartGold and SoulSilver description

|---|---|---|
| Gold | One of the original paired Johto releases | Choose it if you specifically want Gold’s version-specific content or are revisiting the original pair. |
| Silver | The other original paired Johto release | Choose it if you specifically want Silver’s version-specific content or are revisiting the original pair. |
| Crystal | An enhanced Game Boy Color edition based on Gold and Silver | Choose it if you want its documented protagonist choice and animated battle sprites. |
The official sources cited here do not provide a complete table of exclusive encounters or every event difference between the three games. If a particular Pokémon, event, or collection goal is deciding the choice, consult a version-specific guide before buying rather than assuming Crystal includes every Gold or Silver feature. The documented enhancements make Crystal an easy general recommendation, but they do not establish it as the best version for every player.

What’s different about Pokémon Crystal?
Nintendo of Europe describes Crystal as the first Pokémon game to let players choose a male or female protagonist. It also identifies animated Pokémon battle sprites as a new feature in the installment. Those are the clearest documented reasons to pick Crystal when you want a version that feels distinct from Gold and Silver. Nintendo of Europe: Pokémon Crystal Version
The same Nintendo page distinguishes the original Crystal from its 3DS Virtual Console version in one notable respect: the Virtual Console release has a post-game scene that allows an encounter with Celebi, while the original Crystal required special accessory use for Celebi. This describes the release’s documented feature, not a guarantee that a new player can still obtain the digital version.

Can you still buy Pokémon Crystal on 3DS?
No—not as a new purchase from the Nintendo 3DS eShop. Nintendo of Europe lists Crystal’s Virtual Console release date as January 26, 2018, and states that purchases on Nintendo 3DS-family and Wii U eShops ended on March 27, 2023. The digital release is now a historical route, not an open storefront option. Nintendo of Europe: Crystal release information and eShop closure
A used Crystal cartridge is a physical option if you have compatible hardware. Before buying, check that the cartridge is authentic, confirm its region and compatibility with your system, and ask about its save-battery condition. Battery condition can affect whether a cartridge retains a save; the official product page establishes the platform, not the condition or availability of any current listing. The original Crystal was released for Game Boy Color, so verify the specific cartridge and console combination rather than assuming every Game Boy-family system will work. Can you play Gold and Silver on a Game Boy Advance?
The Pokémon Company lists Game Boy Advance alongside Game Boy and Game Boy Color as supported hardware for Gold and Silver. Check the label and condition of the specific cartridge, and confirm compatibility for the hardware you plan to use. Crystal’s original release is identified separately by Nintendo as Game Boy Color-only. The Pokémon Company: Gold and Silver supported hardware; Nintendo: Crystal platform

Nintendo’s compatibility information lists the Virtual Console versions of Gold, Silver, and Crystal as compatible with Poké Transporter. It also describes Pokémon Bank as able to transfer stored Pokémon—including Pokémon moved via Poké Transporter—into the games listed there and Pokémon HOME. That establishes compatibility for the titles and transfer services named on the page; it does not establish whether someone who lacks the legacy applications can acquire or set them up today. Treat the possibility of transferring Pokémon as dependent on having the required apps and a working setup, rather than as a service guaranteed to be available to every new or returning player. Quick Recap
How to choose your Johto replay
- Pick Crystal if its selectable protagonist and animated battle presentation are the features you value most.
- Pick Gold or Silver if you want to revisit one of the paired original releases or need a particular version’s content.
- Check the actual hardware and access route before spending money: the 3DS eShop is closed to new purchases, while physical cartridges require compatible hardware and a trustworthy listing.
- If transferring Pokémon is part of your plan, verify that you already have the necessary legacy applications and setup; title compatibility alone does not confirm current access.
