An Android user will recognize the setup process and Google account model, while gaining Nothing’s visual design, widgets, Glyph-related tools and Essential apps. The important qualifications are model-specific support, staged updates and incomplete iPhone-transfer guidance. Check the exact phone, region and carrier before you move your data or trade in your old device.
Nothing OS in plain terms
Nothing OS is the Android-based software installed on Nothing phones. It uses Android’s core framework, Google services and standard Android application model, then adds Nothing’s own interface and utilities. That makes a move from another Android phone fundamentally an Android-to-Android switch rather than a move to an unfamiliar operating system.

The current official Nothing OS 5.0 page describes a release based on Android 17. It combines Google’s platform changes with Nothing-specific work such as unified icons and layouts, widgets, Essential Space improvements, Essential Voice changes, Essential Apps and Bluetooth controls. Glyph-related experiences are also part of the Nothing product identity, although the available functions depend on the hardware in the particular phone.
Those descriptions are announcements from Nothing, not independent performance measurements. A feature shown on the OS 5.0 page may be limited by hardware, still in staged testing, delivered later in your market or supplied through a separate Google Play update. Treat the exact model’s software page and update notice as the authority for what you will actually receive.

What changes when you come from another Android phone?
Your Google account remains central. During the phone’s first-run setup, Nothing’s transfer flow can copy selected information from an existing Android device. You can choose categories instead of copying everything, and applications that do not arrive automatically can be downloaded again from Google Play.
Transfer is not the same as cloning the old phone. App developers control their own sign-in systems, encrypted databases and device-specific settings. Expect to authenticate again in some apps and verify security keys, banking approvals, authenticator codes and other sensitive items separately. Keep the old phone available until you have confirmed that important services work.
| Data or setting | What Nothing’s Android transfer instructions establish |
|---|---|
| Texts | Included among the categories that can transfer with the setup process. |
| Videos | Included among transferable categories. |
| Contacts | Included among transferable categories. |
| Calendar | Included among transferable categories. |
| Music | Included among transferable categories. |
| Applications | Apps that do not transfer can be downloaded from Google Play. |
| Private app data and authentication | The instructions do not promise that every app’s private data, login or device configuration will migrate. |
How to move from Android to a Nothing Phone
Nothing’s support guidance assumes that you perform the copy during initial setup. Prepare both devices before starting; postponing the transfer until after setup may require a reset or a separate app-specific method.
- Update and charge both phones. Install pending system and app updates, charge the old and new phones, and make a separate backup of irreplaceable photos, documents and authentication information.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. The setup process needs network access. Keep both phones close together and connected to power if the copy is large.
- Start the Nothing Phone setup wizard. When asked how to configure the device, choose the option for copying data from an existing Android phone.
- Choose a connection method. Nothing’s newer instructions describe scanning a QR code, signing in to Google and then selecting what to copy. Its cable instructions describe connecting the phones directly. Follow the method displayed by your model and software version.
- Sign in to your Google account. Use the account associated with the old phone so contacts, calendar data and previously installed applications can be associated with the new device.
- Select categories. Review the available list and uncheck anything you do not want copied. The documented categories include texts, videos, contacts, calendar and music.
- Leave the phones undisturbed. Nothing says the process can take from a few minutes to more than an hour, depending on the amount of data. Interrupting the connection or powering down either phone can leave the copy incomplete.
- Check the result before wiping the old phone. Open your message history, contacts, calendar, photos and other critical files. Confirm that calls, notifications and two-factor authentication work.
- Reinstall and sign in to missing apps. Open Google Play to download applications that were not copied. Sign in manually where required and restore each app from its own backup system if available.
Do not erase, reset or trade in the old phone until this verification is complete. A successful setup transfer does not prove that every account, encrypted app database or hardware-bound credential moved with it.
Switching from an iPhone requires extra checking
The official Nothing transfer pages reviewed for this guide describe Android-to-Nothing setup. They do not establish a comprehensive iPhone migration procedure. An iPhone owner should therefore treat the move as a service-by-service project rather than assuming that the Android flow will reproduce an iPhone.
- List the services you cannot afford to lose, including messages, photos, contacts, calendars, password managers and authentication apps.
- Check each service’s export, cloud-sync or Android sign-in instructions before you wipe the iPhone.
- Keep the iPhone active until you have tested important conversations, files, account recovery methods and two-factor approvals on the Nothing Phone.
- Verify how Apple-specific services and purchased content will be accessed on Android; the reviewed Nothing instructions do not provide those individual procedures.
What Nothing OS 5.0 adds—and what it does not guarantee
Nothing’s official US OS 5.0 page presents Android 17 changes alongside Nothing’s own features. The announced areas include:
Rank #2
- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
- Notifications and Quick Settings: separate panels and Android 17 changes to the way these controls are presented.
- Quick Share: additional sharing options within the Android framework.
- Privacy: expanded privacy controls described on the release page.
- Essential Space: Smart Collections and improved search.
- Essential Voice: changes to the voice-driven experience.
- Essential Apps: tools for building or using the Essential Apps experience.
- System behavior: Nothing describes faster interaction and memory-management work, plus Bluetooth controls.
Nothing’s community roadmap explains that features can arrive at different times because of hardware support, optimization and stability testing. Essential Space, Essential Search, Nothing Gallery and Nothing X can also be updated through Google Play outside a major operating-system release. Do not use the OS version number alone as proof that every advertised tool is present.

OS 5.0 eligibility and rollout
As checked on October 13, 2026, Nothing’s US page gave the following indicative windows. The page does not specify a year beside each month label, and Nothing says stable deployment is phased by region and carrier, so these are not guaranteed dates for every owner.
| Model | Indicative timing shown by Nothing |
|---|---|
| Phone (3) | From October 12th |
| Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (4a), Phone (3a) Pro, Phone (3a) | Early November |
| Phone (2a), Phone (2a) Plus | Mid November |
| Phone (3a) Lite | Late December |
| Phone (4b), CMF Phone 2 Pro | Mid January |
Nothing explicitly states: Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 have reached the end of major software support and will not receive Nothing OS 5.0.
If OS 5.0 is a deciding factor, those three models should be removed from your shortlist. For every other model, check the live regional page and the update screen rather than relying on a month copied from an older article.
Update support is a model-by-model decision
Nothing does not publish one universal support promise that can safely be applied to every phone. The following official product-page examples show why the exact model matters:
| Phone | Published commitment | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Phone (4a) | Three years of OS updates and six years of security updates; the product page identifies Android 16. | A current model example, but the statement is tied to this phone and should not be generalized to other models. |
| Phone (1) | Three years of Android updates and four years of security patches delivered every two months. | An older-model example with a different security period; it is not a remaining-support calculation without launch and policy dates. |
Before buying, record the model’s promised major-OS and security periods, its launch or policy reference date, and whether the features you want are hardware-dependent. Compare those facts—not the Nothing name alone—when choosing between candidate phones.

Beta software needs a higher tolerance for risk. Nothing warns that beta builds can affect stability, battery life and performance. Rolling back erases data, so create a backup before enrolling and before using any rollback procedure. A beta is inappropriate on a phone needed for work, banking or reliable two-factor authentication unless you have a separate fallback device.
Common switching problems and practical fixes
The copy finishes but an app is missing
Open Google Play and reinstall it. Then use the app’s own sign-in or restore process. A missing icon does not necessarily mean your account data was lost; it may simply not have been included in the setup copy.
Messages, photos or contacts look incomplete
Keep the old phone untouched, reconnect both devices to power and Wi-Fi, and compare the categories you selected. Check cloud accounts and the relevant app’s own backup settings. Do not reset the old device while you are still reconciling the totals.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA promised OS feature is absent
Confirm the exact model, hardware capability, regional rollout and software build. Some experiences arrive through Google Play separately from the major OS package, while others are held for testing or optimization.
The update is not offered on release day
Nothing describes the timetable as indicative and phased by region and carrier. Wait for the rollout to reach your device, keep checking Settings → System → System updates, and consult the current regional announcement rather than forcing an unofficial package.
You want to leave a beta
Back up first. Nothing’s warning says rollback erases data, so treat the process as a reset and ensure you can restore accounts and files afterward.
A pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the exact Nothing model and confirm its OS 5.0 eligibility.
- Read that model’s own OS-update and security-update commitment.
- Check whether the hardware supports the Glyph, Essential and connectivity features you care about.
- For Android, prepare both phones, a Google account, Wi-Fi and enough time for a copy that may exceed an hour.
- For iPhone, document each important service’s Android migration or export path before buying.
- Plan to reinstall some apps and sign in again.
- Keep the old phone until messages, media, contacts, calendars and authentication all work.
- Check regional and carrier rollout information before assuming a release date applies to you.
Nothing OS can feel familiar to Android users while still offering a distinct interface and tools. The safest switch is based on the exact phone’s support terms, a verified transfer plan and realistic expectations about staged features—not on the operating-system name alone.
