Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In North America, a completed Nintendo eShop game or DLC purchase is normally final and non-refundable, including a purchase made by mistake. The important exception is an eligible digital preorder: you can cancel before Nintendo processes payment and begins preload, with the cutoff occurring no later than seven days before release. Physical purchases follow the seller’s policy: Nintendo Store pre-purchases require contacting Nintendo Support, while games bought elsewhere must be returned to that retailer.
The correct answer therefore depends on four details: your country, whether the game is digital or physical, where you bought it, and whether a digital preorder has reached its payment and preload window.

Start with the purchase type and timing
Use this table to identify the rule that applies before contacting anyone. The policy details below are Nintendo of America and Nintendo Support guidance for the Americas; other regions can have different terms and consumer-law protections.
| What you bought | Typical North American result | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Completed digital game or DLC from Nintendo eShop | Normally no refund or exchange, including an accidental purchase | Check your circumstances against Nintendo’s terms and contact Nintendo Support if you believe an exception or legal right may apply |
| Digital preorder that has not reached payment and preload | Cancellation is allowed until the payment/preload transition; Nintendo places this no sooner than seven days before release | Cancel through the Nintendo Account/eShop preorder-management flow as soon as possible |
| Digital preorder after payment or preload begins | The ordinary preorder cancellation window has passed | Contact Nintendo Support; do not assume a refund will be approved |
| Physical pre-purchase from Nintendo Store | Nintendo charges immediately; cancellation is handled by Nintendo Support | Contact Nintendo Support with the order details |
| Physical game bought from another retailer | The selling retailer’s return policy controls | Use that retailer’s return process and check local consumer rules |
Completed digital games and DLC: why refunds are usually denied
Nintendo of America’s digital-products policy says: “Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Nintendo Account services (including pre-purchases and subscription payments) are final and non-refundable.” That language covers purchases made through Nintendo Account services, including eShop games and downloadable content.

Nintendo Support is even more direct about a mistaken eShop purchase: “We are unable to provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases.” The support guidance specifically addresses concerns such as choosing the wrong game, disliking a game, or buying accidentally. Reading the product description, age rating, screenshots and other listing information before selecting Buy is Nintendo’s stated way to avoid these situations.
What “mistaken purchase” includes
- Selecting the wrong title or edition.
- Buying DLC for a game you do not own or for the wrong account.
- Confirming a purchase accidentally.
- Deciding that you do not like the game after downloading or playing it.
These circumstances do not create an automatic North American refund right under Nintendo’s published support wording. Nintendo can authorize an exception, and applicable law can require a remedy, but neither possibility guarantees that a particular request will be accepted.
How to approach Nintendo Support
If your case may involve a legal requirement, a transaction you do not recognize, a technical billing problem, or another circumstance outside an ordinary mistaken purchase, contact Nintendo Support through the support options for your country. Have the Nintendo Account email address, order or transaction information, title and edition, purchase date, and console details available. Explain the facts accurately and ask what remedy is available; do not describe an accidental purchase as unauthorized unless that is true.
Support may need to verify the account or payment record. Avoid repeatedly attempting the purchase while a billing issue is unresolved, because duplicate transactions can make the record harder to interpret. Nintendo’s public policy remains the baseline, so contacting support is a request for review, not a promise that a completed digital purchase will be refunded.
Digital eShop preorders: the narrow cancellation window
Digital preorders are treated differently before Nintendo charges the payment method and starts preloading the game. Nintendo’s current Nintendo eShop Pre-Order and Pre-Load FAQ says you can cancel an eligible preorder at any time before payment is processed and the game is preloaded, “up to 7 days before the game’s release date.” Nintendo says payment is processed no sooner than seven days before release.

What the seven-day statement means
“Seven days before release” is a policy timing threshold, not a guarantee that every game will charge at exactly the same moment. Nintendo’s wording means the payment/preload transition will not occur earlier than that point. Once Nintendo has processed payment and begun preload, the ordinary self-service cancellation period has ended.
Release timing can be displayed in the eShop in your local time zone. If a title’s release schedule changes, use the date shown for your account and act before the displayed cutoff rather than waiting for the final day.

- Open the Nintendo eShop on the Switch console or use the Nintendo Account purchase-management page associated with the preorder.
- Sign in to the purchasing Nintendo Account. A different user profile on the same console may not show the order.
- Open your preorder or purchase history and select the unreleased game.
- Choose the cancellation option shown for that eligible preorder and confirm. If the option is absent, the order may already be within the payment/preload window, may have been purchased through a different account, or may not qualify for self-service cancellation.
- Save the confirmation and check that the preorder no longer appears as active. Keep the order information until you verify that no charge was made.
Cancel as soon as you decide. Waiting until the stated cutoff creates a risk that payment or preload will begin first. If Nintendo has already charged the order, do not assume deleting the download, archiving the software, or removing the icon reverses the transaction; those actions do not themselves cancel a purchase.
Physical pre-purchases from Nintendo Store
Nintendo distinguishes a physical pre-purchase from a digital eShop preorder. A physical pre-purchase is placed through Nintendo Store, and Nintendo says the buyer is charged immediately. Because payment occurs at the time of the order rather than near the game’s release, the digital seven-day preorder rule does not apply.
Cancellation steps
- Locate the Nintendo Store order confirmation and note the order number, email address, product, and shipping details.
- Contact Nintendo Support and request cancellation of the physical pre-purchase.
- Ask whether the order has entered fulfillment. If it has shipped, support may direct you to the store’s return procedure instead of canceling the shipment.
- Keep the support case number and monitor the original payment method for the final outcome.
Nintendo’s published guidance tells buyers to contact support for these cancellations; it does not promise that every order can be stopped after processing or shipment. Do not treat a Nintendo Store physical order as if it were an eShop download.

Physical games bought from another retailer
If you bought a cartridge or boxed game from a retailer other than Nintendo Store, that seller—not Nintendo—sets the ordinary return window, condition requirements, restocking rules and refund method. Nintendo’s US policy index separates online Nintendo Store returns from digital products and identifies the store policy as applying in the United States and Canada; it does not establish the policies of unrelated retailers.

- Whether the return period starts on purchase, shipment or delivery.
- Whether the package must be unopened, or whether opened software can be returned for a defect.
- Whether downloadable bonus codes, game cards or bundled items change eligibility.
- Whether the retailer refunds the original shipping charge or deducts a return fee.
- Whether an exchange, store credit or manufacturer warranty is offered instead of a cash refund.
Use the receipt, order page or the retailer’s customer-service channel for the exact answer. If the game is defective, document the symptom and follow the seller’s defective-product process; do not report a preference-based return as a defect. Local consumer-protection rules can add rights beyond the retailer’s voluntary policy.

“I bought the wrong Switch game.”
For a completed eShop purchase, Nintendo Support says mistaken purchases are not refundable or exchangeable. If it was a digital preorder that has not reached payment and preload, cancel it through the preorder flow instead. For a physical copy, ask the retailer that sold it.
“I downloaded the game but do not like it.”
Dislike after purchase is not identified by Nintendo as an automatic refund reason for a completed digital transaction. A physical copy remains subject to the seller’s rules, such as unopened-product requirements or a separate defect process.
“I preordered digitally and changed my mind.”
Check immediately whether payment and preload have started. Before that transition, Nintendo allows cancellation for an eligible preorder, with the cutoff no later than seven days before release. Afterward, contact Nintendo Support, but do not assume the digital-products policy has been waived.

Give a truthful account of whether anyone with access to the account may have made the purchase.
“The game is broken or does not work.”
Record the console model, software version, error message and troubleshooting already attempted. A technical complaint is not the same as a guaranteed refund.
Country and regional limits
The rules above are based on Nintendo of America and Nintendo Support pages for the Americas. Nintendo’s terms, preorder mechanics, payment timing and consumer protections can differ by country. A statement that digital payments are final in North America should not be treated as a worldwide legal conclusion.
Readers outside the United States and Canada should select their country or region on Nintendo’s support site, read the local digital-products terms, and check the consumer authority that applies where the purchase was made. The seller’s location, your billing address, the account region and the transaction currency can all affect which rules govern the order.
Quick Recap
Preventing an unwanted purchase
- Read the eShop description, screenshots, supported languages, age rating and edition details before confirming.
- Check which Nintendo Account is active, especially on a shared console.
- Review the total price, including tax where displayed, before entering the final confirmation.
- For preorders, record the release date and set a reminder well before the seven-day payment/preload threshold.
- Keep order confirmations and receipts until you have tested the purchase and confirmed the transaction is correct.
- Use account security controls and avoid sharing payment credentials with other console users.
A decision checklist before you request help
- Identify your location and the Nintendo Account region used for payment.
- Classify the transaction as completed digital, digital preorder, Nintendo Store physical pre-purchase, or third-party physical purchase.
- For a digital preorder, determine whether Nintendo has charged the payment method or started preload.
- Gather the order number, purchase date, title, account email and a factual description of the problem.
- Contact the correct party: Nintendo Support for Nintendo digital transactions and Nintendo Store physical pre-purchases; the selling retailer for other physical games.
- Ask which policy or legal rule applies and keep the response for your records.
