Laufey and Faye are the same character: Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother. In God of War (2018), her death sends the family on a journey to spread her ashes; in the new God of War Laufey, the story shifts to her. PlayStation says the new game can be played standalone, so you do not need to finish the earlier Norse games first.
Who is Laufey, or Faye?
Faye is the name used for her in Kratos and Atreus’s family story. The new game’s official title and product page use “Laufey (Faye),” making clear they refer to the same person. She is Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother.

Santa Monica Studio describes her as a legendary warrior and leader whose influence on the Nine Realms began before she met Kratos. The new game’s page calls her a guardian of the Jötnar, a rebel leader against the Aesir, and a protector of the Wildwoods. These are descriptions of the series’ fictional world, not claims about historical Norse mythology. Santa Monica Studio’s announcement and the official PlayStation game page provide the franchise’s descriptions.

Why does Faye matter in the earlier games?
Faye has died before God of War (2018) begins. Kratos and Atreus set out to spread her ashes, and that journey introduces the Norse saga’s family story. Her absence is therefore central to the earlier game, even though she is not present as a living character through most of its events.
#1 Best Overall
- Feel your journey through the Norse realms, made possible by immersive haptic feedback and adaptive trigger functionality.
- Take advantage of multidirectional 3D Audio; hear enemies approaching from any direction. (3D audio with stereo headphones (analog or USB))
- Bask in the beautiful worlds you travel through, brought to life by precise art direction and arresting attention to detail.
- Switch between full 4K resolution at a targeted 30 frames per second, or dynamic resolution upscaled to 4K at a targeted 60fps. (4K resolution requires a compatible 4K TV or display)
This is enough context to understand why a game focused on her is a significant change in perspective. You do not need the later revelations in God of War (2018), or the ending of God of War Ragnarök, to follow the premise of the new game.
What is the new God of War game about?
God of War Laufey follows Faye after her funeral. According to PlayStation, she awakens in an unfamiliar afterlife and discovers that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are at risk. She must find a way home through the Everywhen, which PlayStation describes as the afterlife of the gods.
Rank #2
- Physical combat over the shoulder free camera brings the action closer than ever combat in God of war is up close frenetic and unflinching. Kratos' Axes powerful, magic and multi faceted is a brutal weapon as well as a versatile tool for exploration
- Midgard and beyond: Set within the untamed forests, mountains, and realms of Norse lore, God of war features a distinctly new setting with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods
- Vicious, physical combat with an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before
The point of view shifts from Kratos and Atreus to Faye. The studio presents her as a formidable warrior and leader; PlayStation describes combat based on speed and control, with a new sword and Jötnar magic. Those are the publisher’s descriptions of the game, not independent assessments of how it plays.
