Rockstar has also identified the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. The story follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos after a failed score draws them into a criminal conspiracy that reaches across the state.
This is not the 1980s setting of the earlier Vice City. Rockstar describes the new game as “modern day Vice City,” although its published material does not establish a precise in-game calendar year or a definitive full map.

Where is GTA 6 set?
GTA 6 is set in Leonida, a fictional state whose main city is Vice City. Rockstar’s first-trailer announcement presents Leonida as the broader destination: Vice City is part of it, but the setting extends beyond the city into several named regions and communities.
That distinction matters when you see “Vice City” used in headlines. It is accurate to call the game a Vice City story, because the city is the central urban location. It is incomplete to describe the entire setting as only one city, because Rockstar’s official location material names places elsewhere in Leonida and describes the protagonists’ lives across the state.

Leonida and Vice City are different geographic scopes
Leonida is the state
Leonida is the fictional state-level setting. Rockstar’s story description says Jason and Lucia become caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida, making the state more than a backdrop for isolated missions. The official material does not publish a complete administrative breakdown, so the named destinations should not be treated as every town, district or playable area.
Vice City is the central city
Vice City is Leonida’s major city and the location most closely associated with the game’s identity. Rockstar’s November 2025 announcement calls the setting “modern day Vice City.” That wording confirms the era and the city’s importance, while still leaving room for travel through the wider state.
What “modern-day Vice City” means
The new game is contemporary rather than a return to the 1980s period used by the earlier Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Rockstar uses “modern day” in its official description, so players should expect the setting to belong to the present-day world of GTA 6 rather than the neon-era chronology of the older title.

Avoid treating a trailer prop, outfit, vehicle or piece of music as proof of a specific year unless Rockstar later gives a calendar date. “Modern-day” is the confirmed description; a more precise year remains unstated.
Confirmed locations in Leonida
Rockstar has named six locations in its official setting and story material. The descriptions below distinguish what the company has confirmed from details that have not been published.
Rank #2
| Location | What Rockstar confirms |
|---|---|
| Vice City | The central city; Rockstar describes the game as a return to modern-day Vice City. |
| Leonida Keys | A named part of the state. Jason’s official biography says he worked there for local drug runners. |
| Grassrivers | A named Leonida location listed in Rockstar’s official locations material. |
| Port Gellhorn | A named Leonida location listed in Rockstar’s official locations material. |
| Ambrosia | A named Leonida location listed in Rockstar’s official locations material. |
| Mount Kalaga | A named Leonida location listed in Rockstar’s official locations material. |
The list confirms names, not a finished map legend. Rockstar has not published a measured map area, a complete district list or a definitive statement that every named place will function as a freely explorable area in the same way. Treat the locations as confirmed pieces of the setting, not as a substitute for a complete map.
How Jason and Lucia are tied to the setting
Jason Duval and the Leonida Keys
Rockstar’s biography says Jason worked in the Keys for local drug runners. That detail places his past directly inside Leonida’s criminal economy and gives the Keys a personal connection to one of the two protagonists. It also establishes that the story’s criminal world is not confined to Vice City’s urban core.

Lucia Caminos and Leonida Penitentiary
Lucia was imprisoned in Leonida Penitentiary and has since been released, according to Rockstar’s character description. Her history makes the state’s justice system part of her backstory before the main events begin. The official material does not provide a broader institutional map or describe every facility in Leonida.
The failed score
Rockstar’s story summary says an easy score goes wrong, leaving Jason and Lucia caught in a criminal conspiracy that extends across Leonida. This is the clearest explanation of why the setting is geographically broad: the protagonists’ central problem is framed as a state-wide conspiracy rather than a single neighborhood dispute.
What the setting tells you before you play
Even without a complete map, the confirmed information gives you a useful way to understand the game’s structure.
- Expect a city-and-state relationship. Vice City supplies the central urban setting, while Leonida provides the larger geographic and political frame.
- Do not assume every story beat happens downtown. Jason’s work in the Keys and the conspiracy’s reach across the state connect the narrative to places beyond Vice City.
- Character history is geographically specific. The Keys and Leonida Penitentiary are not generic references; they are locations tied to Jason’s and Lucia’s biographies.
- Place names are confirmed, but their exact boundaries are not. Rockstar has named Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga without publishing a complete map of how they connect.
What Rockstar has not confirmed about the map
No official map-size figure
Rockstar’s published setting material does not provide acreage, square-mile measurements or another map-size statistic. Any exact figure circulating without a source from Rockstar should be treated as unverified. Do not infer scale from a trailer, a screenshot or the number of place names shown.
No definitive complete map
The official locations page names several destinations, but it does not present a definitive inventory of every playable district or a complete road-by-road map. A named location can be confirmed without knowing its size, boundaries, neighboring areas or role in free roam.
No exact calendar year
“Modern day” establishes the broad era, not a specific date. Rockstar has not supplied an exact in-game year in the setting descriptions covered here, so claims that place the story in a particular year go beyond the confirmed material.
No complete explanation of each region
Rockstar has identified the names of Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga, but the official location material does not provide a full profile of each place. Until Rockstar publishes more, avoid asserting their exact geography, population, industries or mission roles.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How this differs from the 1980s Vice City game
The shared name does not mean the two games use the same period or the same version of the city. The earlier Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is associated with an explicitly 1980s setting. GTA 6 instead returns to Vice City in a modern-day context and places it inside the wider state of Leonida.
Rank #4
That creates two useful distinctions when reading previews or watching older videos:
- Era: the older game’s 1980s period is separate from GTA 6’s modern-day setting.
- Geographic scope: Vice City is the city in both the naming tradition and the new game’s central setting, while Leonida is GTA 6’s broader state.
Older maps, mission guides and lore discussions can therefore provide franchise context without proving what exists in GTA 6. They should not be used as evidence for the new game’s map size, districts or chronology.
What to check before buying or scheduling time to play
Platform and release date
Rockstar’s current official Grand Theft Auto VI page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a scheduled release date of November 19, 2026. Release information can change, so verify the date and platform list on Rockstar’s page again when you are ready to pre-order or make plans. The published information cited here does not establish a PC launch date.
Do not confuse a collection listing with the game’s map
Rockstar’s site also references a Vice City Collection and official collectibles. Those references concern merchandise or collection material, not a confirmed in-game map or a list of playable regions. A product page or retailer listing should not be treated as geographic documentation unless Rockstar explicitly describes it that way.
Use official updates for new geography
If Rockstar later reveals a district, island or route not listed above, compare the wording carefully. A screenshot can show an environment; an official location announcement can confirm a place name; neither automatically supplies a measured map size or proves that the visible area represents the full playable world.
A reader’s quick reference
- State: Leonida.
- Central city: modern-day Vice City.
- Other named locations: the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga.
- Protagonists: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.
- Backstory links: Jason worked for local drug runners in the Keys; Lucia was imprisoned in Leonida Penitentiary before her release.
- Story frame: a failed score leads into a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida.
- Still unconfirmed: exact in-game year, complete map, total map area and a full list of playable districts.
- Current official launch listing: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, subject to change.
Bottom line for first-time players
Think of GTA 6 as a modern-day Vice City story set inside the larger fictional state of Leonida. Vice City is the anchor, but the confirmed setting reaches through the Keys and other named Leonida locations, and both protagonists’ histories are rooted in that wider geography. Rockstar has provided enough information to understand the scope and era, but not enough to justify a complete map, a precise map-size claim or an exact calendar year. Those details should wait for a direct official announcement.
