For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, cryptocurrency and other digital assets are generally treated as property. Selling for dollars, swapping one token for another, spending tokens, or sometimes paying a fee in tokens can create a reportable gain or loss. Mining, staking, rewards, airdrops, and payment for services can create ordinary income even before you sell. Keep complete U.S.-dollar basis and transaction records, and report taxable activity whether or not a broker sends you a tax form. This guide covers federal rules only; state, local, and non-U.S. treatment can differ.
Why a crypto purchase can become a tax event
The Internal Revenue Service says digital assets are property and that the general rules for property transactions apply to them. Its FAQ states: “Digital assets are treated as property, and the general tax principles applicable to all property transactions also apply to transactions involving digital assets.” See the IRS digital-asset FAQ.

Buying and holding an asset with dollars generally does not by itself produce a gain or loss. Tax consequences usually begin when you dispose of the asset or receive it as compensation, a reward, or another form of income. The IRS describes the reporting duty broadly: “If you have digital asset transactions, you must report them whether or not they result in a taxable gain or loss.” The IRS digital-assets guidance is the starting point for federal filing decisions.
Transactions that can require a gain-or-loss calculation
| Activity | Typical federal treatment | Records to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Sell cryptocurrency for U.S. dollars | Capital gain or loss generally equals the amount realized minus adjusted basis. | Units sold, sale date and time, dollar proceeds, fees, and the lot or lots used. |
| Exchange one digital asset for another | A swap is generally a disposition of the asset you gave up; the new asset receives a new basis based on the transaction facts. | Both assets, quantities, execution values in dollars, date and time, and fees. |
| Spend tokens on goods or services | Using an asset to pay can dispose of it and produce a gain or loss compared with its basis. | Asset quantity, dollar value at payment, merchant or service description, and basis. |
| Pay a network or platform fee in digital assets | The fee payment itself can be a disposition; do not assume it disappears from the tax history. | Fee asset and quantity, dollar value, timestamp, and transaction identifier. |
| Move assets between wallets you control | Do not assume every internal transfer is taxable. The tax result depends on the facts and the source set does not resolve every transfer pattern. | Sending and receiving addresses, dates, quantities, and evidence of common ownership. |
Non-cash exchanges can still have dollar values for tax calculations. A broker statement may show proceeds, but it may not identify the correct basis or every wallet transaction, so your own history remains essential.

Income can arise before you sell
Receiving a digital asset is not always an investment sale. The reporting form depends on why you received it and your status as an employee, contractor, business, or individual.
Payment for work or services
Coins or tokens paid as wages are handled through wage reporting. Payment for independent-contractor work generally follows self-employment reporting, while business receipts belong on the business’s applicable schedules. The dollar value and receipt date become important records even if you continue holding the asset.
Mining, staking, and rewards
Mining or staking proceeds and other rewards may be ordinary income when received. Keep the quantity, date and time, dollar value used, and any related expenses. Later selling the reward is a separate disposition that can create a capital gain or loss measured from the income value used as basis.

Airdrops and similar distributions
Certain airdrops and distributions may be taxable income, but the answer depends on how and when you obtained control of the asset. Preserve notices, wallet records, and valuation evidence rather than assuming every unsolicited token has the same treatment.

Which forms may apply
Ordinary income can flow through Form 1040 and Schedule 1, wage forms, or self-employment and business schedules, depending on the activity. The IRS digital-assets page and the IRS FAQ describe the categories; do not force every receipt into capital-gain reporting.
How to calculate a capital gain or loss
1. Establish the adjusted basis
Basis is generally what the asset cost in U.S. dollars, adjusted as required by the tax rules. For each lot, retain the acquisition date, quantity, dollar value, and transaction costs. An older IRS virtual-currency FAQ discusses acquisition costs and fees as potential components of basis. Because digital-asset broker rules and instructions changed for transactions beginning Jan. 1, 2025, verify the current treatment of fees for the year you are filing rather than applying an old rule automatically. The historical reference is the IRS virtual-currency FAQ.
2. Determine the amount realized
For a sale, amount realized is generally the value you receive, measured in U.S. dollars, less any adjustments required by the applicable rules. In a crypto-to-crypto exchange, document the dollar value of what you received and the asset you disposed of. For a purchase, record the dollar value of the goods or services obtained.

The basic computation is:
Gain or loss = amount realized − adjusted basis.
A positive result is a gain; a negative result is a loss. Calculate each disposition by tax lot, then combine the results on the required forms. Gross proceeds on a broker statement are not the same as taxable gain because gain depends on basis.

4. Apply the holding period
The IRS describes a capital asset held one year or less before disposal as producing a short-term result and one held more than one year as producing a long-term result. Keep acquisition and disposal dates precise enough to support that classification. The applicable rates and loss limits depend on your broader tax situation, so do not infer a final bill from the gain amount alone.
Records to build before you invest
A complete history is easier to create continuously than to reconstruct after several years of wallets and exchanges. Save both original exports and a readable ledger.
- Exchange and wallet names, account identifiers, and addresses you control.
- Date and time for every acquisition, disposal, reward, and transfer.
- Units and asset symbols, including tokens received in a swap or reward.
- U.S.-dollar value at each event and how that value was determined.
- Fees, including whether the fee was paid in fiat or digital assets.
- Transaction hashes, CSV files, statements, and screenshots for discontinued platforms.
- Documentation for wages, contractor payments, mining, staking, airdrops, and other income.
- Notes linking a transfer between your own wallets so it is not mistaken for a sale.
Reconcile every exchange export to your wallet activity. A missing deposit can make a later sale appear to have no basis, while a duplicated import can overstate proceeds or losses. Keep records for the period required by your tax circumstances and back them up in more than one location.

Capital dispositions
Use Form 8949 as directed for digital-asset dispositions and summarize the resulting capital gains and deductible losses on Schedule D, subject to your circumstances. The 2025 Form 8949 instructions describe digital assets as property recorded on a cryptographically secured distributed ledger or similar technology and direct transactions to the appropriate short- or long-term boxes.

Ordinary-income activity
Report wages, self-employment receipts, business income, and other ordinary income on the forms that match the activity. A staking reward is not automatically a capital gain merely because it was delivered to an investment wallet.
Losses and unusual transactions
Do not assume a token that became worthless, a failed platform, a wrapped token, a decentralized-finance transaction, a non-fungible token, a gift, or a wallet loss follows the simplest sale rules. The federal sources summarized here do not resolve every one of those situations. Gather the full facts and obtain advice from a qualified professional before choosing a reporting position.

Broker reporting for covered digital-asset transactions begins with activity on Jan. 1, 2025. The IRS says brokers must furnish statements for 2025 activity by Feb. 17, 2026. Most 2025 statements will not include basis, so the form may show proceeds without telling you the taxable gain. See the IRS Jan. 28, 2026 tax reminder.

| Tax year | What to expect | Your action |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 activity | Covered brokers issue Form 1099-DA; most statements generally omit basis. | Compare reported proceeds with your complete lot and basis records and report the related income, gains, or losses. |
| 2026 and later | The basis-reporting phase described in the 2026 Form 1099-DA instructions differs from the 2025 transition. | Read the instructions for the specific year and still reconcile the statement to wallets and other platforms. |
You must report income, gain, or loss whether or not a 1099-DA arrives. A statement can be missing because an activity was outside the broker’s reporting scope, an account was closed, or information was incomplete; lack of a form is not evidence that the transaction is exempt.

Software, manual records, or professional review?
Record-aggregation software can reduce spreadsheet work, but imported data is not automatically correct. Vendor documentation is useful for understanding capabilities, not proof that a return is accurate.
- Self-prepared ledger: Best when activity is limited and you can identify every lot, transfer, and income event. It requires disciplined reconciliation and current form knowledge.
- Tax software integration: CoinTracker’s TurboTax Online guide says a paid plan is required, the complete crypto history should be included, and TurboTax import is limited to 1,000 capital-gain or loss transactions. Its documentation also notes that some ordinary-income data may need manual entry. Review its forms and software information for current compatibility.
- Alternative report generators: Koinly describes reports for Form 8949, Schedule D, and Schedule 1, plus TurboTax and TaxAct formats, in its tax-report documentation. It notes that prior-year loss carryovers may require separate accounting. Verify every imported transfer, missing basis entry, and carryover before filing.
- Qualified tax professional: A CPA or tax adviser experienced with digital assets is especially valuable for business activity, mining, staking, incomplete records, major gains, multi-state issues, or complex DeFi, NFT, gift, and loss questions.
Whichever method you use, compare the final Form 8949 totals with exchange statements, wallet exports, and your 1099-DA. Resolve duplicate transactions and unexplained basis before submitting the return.
Questions to answer before placing your first order
- Which country and states govern your return? This guide addresses U.S. federal rules only.
- Will you hold assets, trade frequently, or use them for payments, staking, mining, or services?
- Where will you store each asset, and can you export a complete history from every platform?
- How will you record dollar value, fees, transaction hashes, and the specific tax lot?
- Who will review your return if a broker statement lacks basis or your activity includes unresolved edge cases?
Set up the recordkeeping system before the first transfer, preserve the original data, and treat every later disposal or income receipt as a separate event to classify. That approach prevents the most common surprise: discovering at filing time that a profitable-looking trade cannot be matched to a defensible basis.
