CIEDE2000 is a standardized way to calculate color differences from CIELAB values, and AVX-512 is a CPU vector-instruction approach that could be used to process calculations in parallel. But neither naming those technologies nor describing a “perceptual lock” proves that a particular synthesis engine uses them correctly or runs faster.
What CIEDE2000 measures—and what it does not
CIEDE2000 calculates a color difference, commonly written as ΔE00, between two CIELAB values. Its formula adjusts for perceived differences in lightness, chroma and hue, including an interaction between chroma and hue. The aim is to make calculated differences better correspond to perceived color differences than a simple unadjusted distance in CIELAB.

ISO/CIE 11664-6:2022, Edition 2, specifies the calculation method. ISO lists the edition as published in August 2022, superseding the 2014 edition. The CIE describes the publication as defining the CIEDE2000 formula. These are color-difference specifications, not standards for judging a generated video’s overall quality.
The standard has a defined scope
CIEDE2000 is intended for CIELAB values calculated according to the applicable CIELAB standard and under specified reference conditions. Its scope concerns color stimuli perceived as reflecting or transmitting objects, including appropriately normalized displays simulating those objects. It does not apply to areas perceived as emitting primary light or as specular reflections. Applying its result outside those conditions requires care; the number does not automatically have the same perceptual meaning for every image or display.

A low color difference is not an identity or video-quality score
A color-difference formula can help compare color values. It does not, by itself, establish that a face resembles a particular person, that motion is consistent across frames, or that a generated clip looks convincing. Using CIEDE2000 as part of an identity or temporal-stability system would require additional definitions and validation for those goals.
What the MiniMax Direct claim establishes
A DEV Community search result attributes claims about “Likeness Lock” and an AVX-512 CIEDE2000 path to a post by Biffer Rowley under this topic’s title. The direct page could not be retrieved, and no independent official product documentation, source repository or reproducible benchmark was located. That makes the post evidence that the claims were published—not independent confirmation that the engine, code or results exist as described.

Claims attributed to the post
- The post describes a 1080p, 24 fps pipeline and attributes a scalar-audit timing of roughly 4.2 milliseconds per frame on a Xeon core to that workload. This is a self-reported figure from the DEV Community result, not an independently validated measurement.
- It describes an AVX-512 Rust implementation with a polynomial atan2 approximation and says it was benchmarked on an AMD EPYC 9654 using 10,000 production frames. The available material does not provide an independently verifiable benchmark artifact or complete methodology.
- It names “Likeness Lock v2.4,” “Hailuo H3” and “MiniMax Direct,” along with queue, telemetry and signup-offer details. Those names and product details are not independently established by official documentation located for this account.
The search result’s benchmark table was incomplete. No independently substantiated performance statistic for the purported engine is established here, so the post’s timing and utilization assertions should not be treated as general performance expectations.

Could AVX-512 speed up CIEDE2000?
Potentially, but SIMD is an implementation strategy, not proof of either speed or correctness. AVX-512 instructions can operate on multiple data elements in parallel, which may suit a workload that calculates color differences for many pixel or sample pairs. The actual benefit depends on the calculation, data layout, conversion work, compiler and CPU, among other factors. An approximation used inside the calculation also needs accuracy testing against a reference.

- Can deliver fast 100 plus FPS performance in the world's most popular games, discrete graphics card required
- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, bundled with the AMD Wraith Stealth cooler
- 4.2 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 19 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform
Even a faster calculation would not show that a whole synthesis pipeline is faster by the same amount: the color-difference step may account for only part of the total processing time. Without a disclosed workload and reproducible method, a claimed speedup cannot be assessed.
How to evaluate a real perceptual-lock implementation
A useful technical report would make the calculation, inputs and test conditions inspectable. These checks separate a plausible SIMD optimization from a result that is both correct and relevant to the intended use.

Check the color calculation
- Compare the scalar and vectorized paths with the specified CIEDE2000 calculation and suitable reference test pairs.
- Include edge cases, especially hue behavior and low-chroma values, rather than testing only typical samples.
- Report the numerical error introduced by any approximations, such as an approximate atan2, and state how that error is measured.
Check the inputs and intended meaning
- Explain how image RGB values are converted and normalized to CIELAB, including the relevant color-space and viewing assumptions.
- Show why the standard’s reference conditions and scope apply to the content being evaluated.
- Define what “lock” means operationally: which values are compared, what threshold or decision rule is used, and how the result affects synthesis. A product label alone does not specify these behaviors.
- Validate any claims about likeness, motion or temporal consistency with measures suited to those goals; a color-difference value alone does not establish them.
Check the benchmark and CPU compatibility
- Disclose frame dimensions, workload, concurrency, warm-up, CPU model, compiler and flags, and the measurement method.
- Provide both latency and throughput where relevant, and compare against a stated reference implementation under the same conditions.
- State which AVX-512 features are required and what happens on CPUs that do not support them. A vectorized path needs a compatibility strategy if the software is expected to run on other hardware.
Bottom line on the title’s claim
CIEDE2000 and AVX-512 are real technical concepts, and vectorizing a color-difference calculation is a plausible engineering approach. The evidence available for the named MiniMax Direct “perceptual locking” system, however, is limited to claims attributed to a DEV Community result. Without independently verifiable implementation details and benchmark evidence, the reported design and performance remain unconfirmed.
