1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a prolonged power outage, prepare several days of water and shelf-stable food, dependable light, a way to receive weather alerts and charge phones, first-aid and sanitation supplies, and essential medicines. FEMA’s baseline is one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days and at least three days of non-perishable food; plan for more if your household, local conditions, or likely outage duration call for it. Include separate plans for medical equipment, refrigerated medication, infants, pets, and safe food storage.
Start with water and food for everyone in the household
Use FEMA’s basic quantities as a starting point, not a guarantee that three days will cover a prolonged outage. Count each person, then extend the supply to match the duration you may need to manage, local conditions, and the water and food needs of pets.

- Water: Store at least one gallon per person per day for at least three days. Consider drinking, basic food preparation, and sanitation needs when deciding whether to store more.
- Food: Keep at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food. Choose items that do not require refrigeration and need little or no preparation.
- Preparation: Add a manual can opener if you store canned food, along with utensils. Check that the household can eat the food in the kit without relying on powered appliances.
- Household additions: Include infant formula and diapers where needed, and food and water for pets and service animals.
FEMA’s [Plan Ahead for Disasters] and basic kit checklists provide the baseline quantities and starting list. The supplies should reflect the people and animals who actually depend on them.
Keep information, light, and phone power available
Receive emergency information
Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio that can receive NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts. If it uses batteries, store extra batteries with it. A radio remains useful when phones cannot connect or their batteries are low.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Light rooms without adding fire risk
Use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns, with spare batteries. FEMA advises against candles for outage lighting because of fire risk. Keep smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms working, with battery backup on every level and near sleeping areas, as described in FEMA’s [2025 power-outage hazard information sheet].
Plan how to charge devices
Charge phones before severe weather when possible, and keep an alternative charging method such as a power bank. There is no single power-bank capacity that fits every household: choose based on the number and type of devices that must remain usable. Keep charging cables compatible with those devices. FEMA’s [disaster-planning guidance] includes alternative phone charging among outage preparations.

Make a plan for medical needs and special circumstances
Powered medical equipment
If someone relies on powered medical equipment or assistive technology, discuss backup power and a relocation option with their clinician or care team before an outage. Identify what must remain powered and how the household will respond if its normal supply is unavailable.
Medication that needs refrigeration
Ask the prescribing clinician or pharmacist how to handle a specific medication after an outage. FEMA advises contacting them if refrigerated medicine has been at room temperature; do not assume the same advice applies to every drug. Keep essential medicine and relevant medical information easy to find.

Protect food when refrigeration stops
Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. FEMA’s 2025 power-outage sheet says a refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours and a full freezer for about 48 hours when kept closed. These are guidance figures, not guarantees for every appliance or outage. Keep a thermometer in each appliance so you can assess conditions rather than relying only on elapsed time.

FEMA advises discarding refrigerated food exposed to 40°F or higher for more than 4 hours, as well as food with an unusual odor, color, or texture. Its short rule is: “When in doubt, throw it out!” See FEMA’s [power-outage hazard information sheet] for its food-safety and outage guidance.
Use generators and fuel-burning equipment safely
A generator is a conditional option, not a default kit item for every household. Its usefulness depends on which appliances need power, the fuel and runtime plan, and whether it can be operated safely.
- Use generators, camp stoves, and charcoal grills outdoors, at least 20 feet from openings in buildings, including windows, doors, and garages, following FEMA’s 2025 guidance.
- Never use a gas stovetop, oven, grill, or dryer to heat the home.
- Never run a vehicle inside a garage, even with the garage door open.
- Plan which appliances are essential; a generator may not power everything at once. Store fuel safely.
These precautions address carbon-monoxide and fire hazards. FEMA’s [2025 outage sheet] covers generator placement and other fuel-burning equipment risks.

Turn the list into a household-ready kit
- Count people and pets. Use that count to calculate the minimum three-day water and food baseline, then decide whether the likely outage duration or household needs require more.
- Check dependence on electricity. Identify medical equipment, refrigerated medication, communication needs, and appliances that matter to health or safety. Make care and backup plans with the relevant clinician or care team.
- Match supplies to how they work. Check that the radio receives NOAA Weather Radio, batteries fit the devices, charging cables fit phones, and stored food can be prepared with the tools in the kit.
- Keep essentials accessible. Store the kit, medicines, documents, and emergency contacts where household members can find them without relying on powered devices.
- Review and replenish. Recheck water, food, batteries, medicines, infant and pet supplies, and the household’s plans as needs change.
