What to Include in a Startup Pitch Deck for a Student Competition

A strong student startup pitch deck makes one evidence-backed case: a real customer has an important problem, your venture solves it in a useful way, the opportunity can become a viable business, and your team knows the next steps. Build the story around the competition’s rubric and time limit—not around a universal slide template. At minimum, cover the problem and customer, solution and value, validation, market, alternatives, business model, go-to-market plan, progress, team, financial assumptions, and a specific ask.

Start with the competition rules, not a slide template

Student competitions differ in slide limits, timing, file requirements, written submissions, and presenter eligibility. Read the current rules and rubric before deciding how much to put on each slide. Examples from official competition pages show why copying another school’s format can create a compliance problem.

Competition example Published requirement or guidance What it means for your deck
University of Nebraska–Lincoln New Venture Competition A pitch deck or presentation is required, but no format is set. Its FAQ recommends planning 8–10 slides for a 10-minute pitch. Use the recommendation as a planning benchmark, not as a universal rule.
UCLA Anderson Knapp Venture Competition Requires a 10-slide deck plus a cover slide. Check whether the cover counts separately and reserve space for required content.
Seattle University competition rounds Allows a maximum 10-minute presentation followed by five minutes of Q&A. Rehearse a timed spoken story and prepare for questions rather than filling slides with text.
Rice Business Plan Competition Its application requires a business plan and distinguishes that document from the presentation deck. Prepare the detailed written submission separately; do not make the live deck unreadable by turning it into a report.
UC Davis Big Bang! Lists a 10-slide deck and evaluates customer and market, business model and plan, team biographies, and pitch delivery. Make the same core story understandable within the stated slide count and judging criteria.

Also verify the allowed file type, whether a cover slide counts, the pitch and Q&A limits, required written materials, who may present, and whether judges receive slides in advance. Treat your own competition’s instructions as controlling when they conflict with examples above.

A practical slide-by-slide structure

The following sequence combines recurring judging topics from university competitions. It is a content framework, not a mandatory order. Merge or split slides only when your rules and speaking time require it.

1. Cover and one-sentence company summary

Put the venture name, a short description, presenter names, and competition information on the cover. The next slide—or a prominent line on the cover—should state what you do for whom. A useful formula is: “We help specific customer achieve measurable or concrete outcome by distinct approach.” Avoid slogans that do not identify a customer or result.

UCLA’s rules explicitly identify company summary as possible content. Your summary should let a judge repeat the idea accurately after hearing it once.

2. The customer problem or opportunity

Name the person or organization experiencing the problem and describe the situation in concrete terms. Explain the frequency, consequence, and current workaround where you have evidence. A student team might show a costly delay, a safety risk, a missed revenue opportunity, or an underserved need; “the market is inefficient” is not enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate the user from the economic buyer when they differ. A student may use a product while a university department, employer, or parent pays. State whose pain you are solving and whose approval or budget is required.

Do not present an anecdote as proof that the problem is widespread. Label interview observations, survey results, pilot data, or other findings by source and date, and explain how many people or organizations they represent.

3. Solution, product, and value proposition

Show how the product or service changes the customer’s situation. Use a simple workflow, product screenshot, prototype image, or before-and-after sequence. Explain the essential steps rather than listing every feature.

Connect each major capability to a customer benefit: time saved, risk reduced, revenue enabled, quality improved, or another outcome the buyer values. Then explain why the proposed approach is better than the customer’s current workaround. If the product is still conceptual, mark what is built, what is being tested, and what remains an assumption.

Villanova’s competition guidance includes company purpose, problem, solution, and “why now”; the timing point belongs here or on a dedicated slide. Explain a change in technology, regulation, behavior, cost, or distribution that makes the problem newly urgent or the solution newly feasible. Do not claim urgency merely because the idea is interesting.

4. Customer validation and traction

Evidence should answer: “What have real prospective customers done, not merely said?” Useful proof can include paid sales, signed pilots, repeat usage, retention, wait-list conversion, letters of intent, completed experiments, or structured interviews that changed the product.

  • Identify the evidence source, collection period, sample size, and relevant segment.
  • Distinguish commitments from compliments: a payment or scheduled pilot is stronger evidence than an expression of interest.
  • Show the learning loop: what you tested, what happened, and what you changed.
  • If you have no traction, present the next validation experiment, its success threshold, and when you will run it. Do not invent numbers to fill the slide.

San José State’s judging criteria address customer validation and commercial viability, while UC Davis evaluates customer and market as well as the business plan. These criteria reward an honest account of what is known and what still needs testing.

5. Target market and transparent sizing

Define the initial beachhead segment narrowly enough to reach. “All college students” is a population, not necessarily a target market. Specify geography, institution type, job role, spending authority, behavior, or another identifying characteristic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Present total addressable market only as context. Judges need to see the reachable segment and the path to it. Explain the assumptions behind any market estimate: number of potential buyers, expected price or annual spend, adoption rate, and time period. Show a bottom-up calculation when possible, such as “number of qualifying departments × annual contract value.”

Label estimates as your team’s estimates and cite the original source and year for external figures. The official competition pages reviewed do not establish a general statistic about student pitch-deck success rates or outcomes, so do not add generic growth percentages as decoration.

6. Competition and defensible differentiation

Customers already use something: a rival product, an internal process, a spreadsheet, a service provider, or doing nothing. Name the relevant alternatives and compare them on factors that matter to the buyer, such as speed, price, accuracy, integration, trust, or access.

A two-axis chart can be useful only when the axes reflect a purchasing decision and the placement is supportable. Otherwise, use a table or concise comparison. Explain your defensible difference—proprietary data, workflow integration, distribution access, domain expertise, switching costs, partnerships, or learning effects—and how it becomes harder to copy over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not say there is “no competition.” If customers have a workaround, it competes for their time and budget. UCLA lists competitive differentiation among possible content, and Villanova also calls for competition analysis.

7. Business model and route to market

State who pays, what they buy, how often they pay, and what triggers expansion or renewal. Clarify whether revenue comes from subscriptions, transactions, licensing, services, hardware, advertising, or a combination. Give the price or pricing logic you are testing and identify whether it is an assumption, a quoted offer, or an observed sale.

Then show how you will reach the first customers. A route-to-market plan might involve campus organizations, department procurement, channel partners, direct sales, marketplaces, or a self-serve funnel. Assign an owner and a measurable next step to each channel. Explain the sales cycle, onboarding requirements, and any dependency on institutional approvals.

Commercial viability requires more than a large market. Connect acquisition cost, delivery cost, gross margin, retention, and sales timing at the level your evidence supports. If those figures are not yet known, list the experiment that will establish them.

8. Progress, roadmap, and milestones

Show what exists today: prototype, minimum viable product, pilot, revenue, users, partnerships, regulatory work, or another verifiable milestone. Use dates and status labels such as completed, in progress, or planned.

A roadmap should contain outcomes rather than a long feature list. For example, “complete 3 paid pilots and achieve 40% weekly retention by September” is more useful than “improve the app.” Tie each milestone to a risk it reduces and to the resources requested. Include dependencies such as manufacturing, approvals, data access, or hiring.

9. Team and execution fit

Introduce the people who will perform the critical work, with roles and evidence of relevant ability. A biography should answer why this team understands the problem and can deliver the next milestone—not simply list majors, clubs, or awards.

State gaps plainly and explain how you will cover them through an advisor, contractor, partner, hire, or learning plan. UC Davis lists team biographies among its evaluation areas, and UC Davis and San José State both connect team quality to the broader business plan and viability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Financial assumptions and the specific ask

Make the few assumptions that drive the plan legible: price, customers, conversion, recurring revenue, major costs, hiring or build timing, and cash runway. A simple 12–24-month scenario can be enough for an early student venture if every figure is labeled as an estimate and the calculation is understandable.

End with one specific ask. The Stu Clark New Venture Championships’ official guidance says teams should clearly articulate the “ASK”—what they are seeking from the judging panel—and notes that it may be financial or another specific need. Explain exactly what you want, how much or what access is required, what the resource will fund, and which milestone it unlocks. For prize money, break the use into categories such as prototype development, a pilot, compliance work, or customer acquisition, with timing.

A request for “support” is too vague. Ask for a defined amount, introduction, pilot decision, workspace, technical help, or other action the judges can evaluate.

Use the judging rubric as a content map

Recurring evaluation axes include problem and solution, customer and market, business model and plan, team, validation, commercial viability, and presentation delivery. The weighting is not identical across competitions, so copy the wording of your own rubric into a planning document and map each criterion to a slide or spoken line.

  • Problem and value proposition: Can a judge identify the customer, pain, and promised outcome quickly?
  • Customer and market: Is the initial segment reachable, and are market figures based on stated assumptions?
  • Validation: What behavior or result demonstrates demand, and what remains unproven?
  • Business model and plan: Who pays, how you reach them, and what must happen next?
  • Team: Which skills and responsibilities make execution credible?
  • Delivery: Can the story be followed within the time limit, with readable slides and a direct response to questions?

San José State publishes judging criteria that include customer validation and commercial viability; UC Davis lists customer and market, business model and plan, team biographies, and pitch delivery. Use those pages as examples of recurring categories, not as a substitute for your event’s current rules.

Design slides for a live audience

One slide should carry one main claim. Put the claim in a descriptive headline (“Three departments agreed to paid pilots”) rather than a label (“Traction”). Use a chart, diagram, or product view when it communicates faster than prose. Keep supporting detail in speaker notes or the required written plan.

  • Use large type and high contrast that can be read from the back of a room.
  • Label axes, units, dates, sample sizes, and whether values are estimates.
  • Use consistent terms for the customer, product, and revenue metric.
  • Remove decorative charts, unexplained icons, and screenshots that cannot be read.
  • Check the submitted PDF or presentation on another device so fonts, videos, and links do not break.

A paid design application is not a judging criterion. Choose tools that let your team produce a legible, reliable file; the evidence and clarity of the story matter more than visual effects.

Rehearse the pitch and prepare for Q&A

Write a spoken transition between slides so the presentation sounds like one argument. Time a complete run with the actual presenters and leave a buffer under the maximum. Practice answering from the evidence on the slides rather than adding unsupported claims under pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare short answers to likely questions: how customers buy, why they switch, what the strongest alternative is, what a pilot costs to deliver, which assumption is riskiest, what happens if adoption is slower, and exactly how the ask changes the next milestone. If a figure is an estimate, say so and explain how you will test it.

Final submission checklist

  • Current rules confirm the slide count, cover-slide treatment, file type, deadline, and upload method.
  • Pitch and Q&A timing are known, and the deck fits the speaking time.
  • Required written materials—such as a business plan—are complete and consistent with the deck.
  • The problem names a specific customer and consequence.
  • The solution demonstrates a clear customer benefit and current status.
  • Validation identifies sources, dates, sample sizes, and learnings.
  • Market sizing shows reachable segments and transparent assumptions.
  • Alternatives include non-purchase and existing workarounds.
  • Business model, pricing logic, route to market, and major cost drivers are stated.
  • Roadmap milestones are dated and connected to risks.
  • Team roles match the work, with gaps and coverage explained.
  • Financial figures are labeled as observed results or estimates.
  • The final slide makes one specific ask and links it to a measurable milestone.
  • Every claim can be defended in Q&A, and the file has been tested on the presentation equipment.
