Steam Next Fest is a weeklong Steam event built around playable demos for upcoming games. You can browse and download demos, add them to your library, and decide whether to follow or wishlist a game. The event does not guarantee that a demo reflects the finished product, remains available afterward, or transfers your save to the full release. Those details are controlled by each developer, so check the game’s store page and announcements before investing serious time.
Valve runs three editions each year—February, June and October—but the exact dates and deadlines change. Use the current Steamworks Next Fest page and the edition-specific event page for the schedule that applies to you.

What Steam Next Fest is—and what it is not
Valve describes Steam Next Fest as “a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos.” Its goals are to help players discover games, give developers exposure and provide feedback before release. The event is a discovery window, not a certification that a game is finished, polished or representative of its final balance and content.
Most demos are free digital downloads. The official information does not require a special handheld, controller, headset or other physical purchase to participate; you need a Steam account and compatible hardware for the individual demo.

Next Fest editions occur three times per year, in February, June and October. Because dates, registration deadlines and participation requirements can change, treat the official event page as the authority rather than relying on a recurring calendar date.
Games generally need to meet these eligibility conditions:
- They are upcoming and unreleased.
- They have a public Steam store page.
- A publicly playable demo will be available by the event.
- They have not appeared in an earlier Next Fest.
- The full game will not release before that edition ends.
Valve does not require a demo to be exclusive to Steam, newly created for the event or a particular length. A short or previously available demo can still fit the general rules if the other conditions are met.

Steam organizes Next Fest listings using the categories developers select during registration and the tags on their store pages. A developer chooses one or two primary categories, while tags help describe genre, features and themes. That system helps you narrow a very large event into areas such as strategy, role-playing, simulation or horror.
Visibility is not a promise of ranking. Valve says placement is randomized in most locations during the first few days, except for specifically named lists and personalized areas. After several days, logged-in users see personalized carousels influenced by their behavior during the event. Your clicks, views and play activity can therefore affect what Steam shows you, but no individual game is guaranteed a prominent position.

Use these tactics to make discovery more useful:
- Start with a genre or feature category, then refine with store tags.
- Open the full store page to read the description, system requirements and developer announcements.
- Watch the trailer only after checking what the demo actually contains; a trailer may show features planned for the full game.
- Keep a short list of promising titles rather than installing everything at once.
- Return later in the week if recommendations initially miss your interests; personalized carousels can change as Steam learns from your activity.
What happens when you click a demo
Adding and installing
Since Valve’s July 25, 2024 update, a demo can be added to your Steam library without being installed immediately. You can queue the installation when you have time or disk space. A demo can also be installed even when you already own the full game.
On many store pages, the demo appears as an install button alongside the full game. Developers may instead publish a separate demo store page. A separate page can carry its own description, screenshots, trailer and supported-feature information, then link back to the full game for players who want to wishlist or purchase it.
Uninstalling a demo removes it from the library. If you want to remove it without installing or uninstalling in the usual way, Steam’s library-management controls also allow account-level removal.
Separate demo pages and reviews
A separate demo page gives the developer more room to explain the build and its limitations. Reviews may be available for a demo with its own store page when the developer enables that feature. A review score therefore reflects that particular demo build and player experience, not necessarily the unreleased game’s eventual quality.
Notifications
Steam can notify you when a demo first becomes available for a game already on your wishlist or for a developer you follow. Valve’s announcement explains that these alerts can be sent by email and through mobile notifications. You control email settings in your Steam preferences. A later patch or content change is not guaranteed to generate another alert.

Can you keep playing a demo after Next Fest?
There is no single event-wide answer. The developer decides whether to leave a demo available after the week ends. Valve encourages developers to consider keeping demos live and to communicate if they intend to deactivate them, but that encouragement is not a requirement.

If no date is listed, do not assume the demo will remain accessible. A developer may keep it online, replace it with a newer build, remove it temporarily, or deactivate it while preparing the full release.
The practical choices are:

Does demo progress transfer to the full game?
Not automatically, and not as a general Steam Next Fest rule. Valve’s event documentation does not define a universal policy for demo saves, achievements, unlocks, settings or other progression. Each studio chooses its own approach, and that approach can change during development.
Before you spend hours completing a demo, search the individual game’s:
- FAQ or technical-support page;
- Steam store-page announcements;
- official community posts or developer channels.
Look for explicit wording such as “progress carries over,” “the demo save is separate,” “the full release starts fresh” or “transfer is undecided.” If the developer says nothing, treat the save as temporary. Cloud synchronization or having the demo in the same Steam library does not, by itself, prove that the full game will recognize the files.

Progress can also be narrower than players expect. A developer might transfer a story checkpoint but reset collectibles, achievements or difficulty settings. Another title may offer a one-time import only from a particular demo build. Record the exact policy and build described by the developer rather than inferring from another game in the same genre.

A wishlist is Steam’s way to keep track of a game you may want to revisit or buy. During Next Fest it can be useful even when you are not ready to install the demo.
According to Valve’s July 25, 2024 Steam News update, Steam can send an email or mobile notification the first time a demo becomes available for a game already on your wishlist, or for a developer you follow. You can adjust email preferences in Steam’s settings.
A wishlist entry does not establish any of the following:

- that a demo exists or will launch on a particular date;
- that the demo will stay playable after Next Fest;
- that every demo update will trigger another notification;
- that your demo save will transfer to the full game;
- that the game will receive a prominent position in event listings.
Use the wishlist as a tracking and notification tool, then verify release timing, demo availability and save behavior on the title’s own page.
A practical Next Fest workflow
- Check the edition dates. Open the current event listing and note when the event ends, not just when it starts.
- Set a discovery filter. Choose a category or genre and add tags that match the features you want.
- Read before installing. Check the demo description, system requirements, supported languages, controller notes and any stated time or content limit.
- Wishlist or follow selectively. Add games you genuinely want to track so alerts remain useful.
- Install from the correct page. Confirm whether you are installing a demo or the full game, especially when both appear together.
- Look for a save policy. Search the store announcements or FAQ before treating your playtime as progress toward release.
- Note any removal date. If the developer publishes one, plan your final session before it expires.
- Send useful feedback. If the developer requests reports, include the demo version, steps to reproduce a problem, hardware details and whether the issue occurs consistently.
- Recheck after updates. A patch can alter content, requirements or save compatibility, so read its notes before continuing an old run.
Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them
“It is in Next Fest, so it must be nearly finished.”
Next Fest participation only establishes that an upcoming game has a public page and a playable demo under Valve’s general conditions. A demo can omit major systems, contain temporary art or represent an early balance pass.
“I added it to my library, so I own permanent access.”
Library placement is not a promise that the developer will keep the demo available. Removal or deactivation can still occur after the event.
“Steam Cloud means my save will work in the full game.”
Cloud storage synchronizes files; it does not make an unrelated full-release build import them. Only the developer can confirm compatibility.

Steam can send the first-demo-availability alert described above, but notification settings, account status and the specific event determine what you receive. Later updates are not guaranteed to trigger another message.
“A separate demo page is the full game’s review score.”
When reviews are enabled, they concern the demo page and its particular build. Read the review text and developer notes for context.

Those platform-level pages cannot answer a game-specific save or removal question. For that, the developer’s store announcements, FAQ and official support channels are the decisive sources.
The Bottom Line
Approach Steam Next Fest as a chance to sample upcoming games, not as a promise of permanent access or transferable progress. Use Steam’s categories, tags and wishlist alerts to find demos, then confirm each title’s availability window and save policy on its own official page.
