Most reactions to an injected flu vaccine are mild: a sore, red or swollen arm, headache, fever, muscle aches, nausea or tiredness. They usually begin soon after vaccination and are short-lived, but CDC guidance does not promise one exact recovery time. Hives, swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing, a fast heartbeat, dizziness or weakness can signal a severe allergic reaction—call 9-1-1 or go to a hospital immediately.
Which side effects are normal after an injected flu vaccine?
The expected effects are signs your body is responding to the injection, not evidence that you caught influenza. They can occur at the injection site or affect the body more generally.

| Reaction | What it may feel or look like | What the guidance says |
|---|---|---|
| Injection-site soreness | Tenderness or pain where the needle entered | A common local reaction after an injected vaccine. |
| Redness or swelling | Visible color change or puffiness around the site | Usually mild and temporary. |
| Headache | Aching or pressure in the head | Listed by CDC among expected reactions. |
| Fever | A measured temperature or feeling feverish | Can occur after vaccination and is generally mild. |
| Muscle aches | Soreness or aching in muscles away from the injection site | An expected short-term reaction for some people. |
| Nausea | Queasiness or an unsettled stomach | Included in CDC’s list of possible effects. |
| Fatigue | Unusual tiredness or reduced energy | Commonly reported and generally mild. |
Not everyone has a reaction, and having no symptoms does not mean the vaccine failed. Likewise, a stronger-feeling arm or a day of tiredness does not by itself indicate a dangerous problem.
When do reactions start, and how long should they last?
CDC consumer guidance says these effects begin soon after vaccination and are usually mild and short-lived. The CDC materials used for this explanation do not assign one guaranteed number of hours or days for every symptom. People recover on different schedules, so judge the trend as well as the symptom itself.

A pattern that is usually reassuring
- The symptom is mild enough for you to function, drink fluids and communicate normally.
- It follows the vaccination rather than appearing with a separate, severe illness.
- It is stable or improving instead of rapidly intensifying.
If a reaction is not settling, keeps getting worse or worries you for any reason, contact a healthcare provider. General vaccine information cannot determine whether an individual symptom is caused by the shot, an infection acquired separately or another medical condition.
A flu shot does not give you influenza
CDC’s Inactivated Influenza Vaccine Information Statement, dated January 31, 2025, states plainly: “Influenza vaccine does not cause flu.” The injected vaccine uses inactivated influenza material and cannot produce an influenza infection.
You can still become ill after vaccination because protection is not immediate, because another respiratory virus caused the symptoms or because influenza exposure occurred before immunity developed. Fever, cough, sore throat, breathing problems, vomiting, severe weakness or other substantial illness should not automatically be labeled a vaccine reaction. Seek clinical advice when symptoms are significant, unusual or worsening rather than trying to diagnose the cause from timing alone.

When is a reaction an emergency?
The most time-critical concern after vaccination is a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). CDC’s safety guidance says these reactions most often happen within minutes to a few hours, although emergency symptoms should be acted on whenever they occur.
Call 9-1-1 for possible severe allergy
Get emergency help immediately for any combination of the following warning signs:
- Hives or widespread itchy welts
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
- Difficulty breathing, wheezing or a feeling that the throat is closing
- A fast heartbeat accompanied by feeling unwell
- Dizziness, faintness or marked weakness
Call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest hospital when emergency care cannot wait. Do not drive yourself if you are faint, weak or having trouble breathing. If you are still at the vaccination site, tell staff immediately; if you have already left, use emergency services rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Fainting and other symptoms that need attention
Fainting around the injection
Fainting can occur after medical procedures, including vaccination. CDC’s Vaccine Information Statement advises telling the provider if you notice dizziness, vision changes or ringing in your ears. Sit or lie down and alert staff at once if those sensations begin while you are being vaccinated or observed afterward. A brief fainting episode still deserves assessment if injury occurred, recovery is not prompt or symptoms recur.
Persistent or worsening illness
Contact a healthcare provider for vaccine concerns, especially when a symptom is persistent, worsening or otherwise worrying. Seek advice sooner for a very high or ongoing fever, severe pain, confusion, dehydration, chest symptoms or breathing difficulty. Those features can have causes that require an examination and are not explained by the usual mild-reaction list.
Symptoms that start after the usual observation period
A delayed symptom is not automatically dangerous, but timing alone cannot establish the cause. Record when it began, how it is changing and any other symptoms, then ask a clinician or the vaccinating service for guidance if it is substantial or does not improve.

What is the Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) concern?
GBS is a rare neurological disorder in which the immune system damages peripheral nerves. It can cause progressive weakness, tingling or difficulty walking and, in severe cases, problems with breathing. These symptoms require urgent medical assessment; they are not something to monitor casually at home.
CDC reports that some studies found a possible association between injectable flu vaccination and GBS and estimated fewer than 1 or 2 cases per million vaccinated people. Other studies found no association. CDC also says GBS is more common after flu illness than after flu vaccination. The estimate is therefore a small, study-based signal—not proof that vaccination caused every case occurring afterward and not evidence that the vaccine has zero risk.

For the 2025–26 U.S. influenza season, CDC lists a history of GBS within six weeks after a previous influenza vaccine as a precaution. Before another dose, discuss the timing and circumstances with a healthcare professional who can weigh your personal risk and the current seasonal recommendation. Do not make that decision from a general side-effect list.

What to do during the hours after vaccination
- Remain available for immediate observation. Follow the vaccination site’s instructions about how long to stay, because serious allergic reactions most often appear within minutes to a few hours.
- Notice local and general changes. Keep track of arm soreness, redness, swelling, headache, fever, aches, nausea and fatigue without assuming that every later illness is vaccine-related.
- Record important details. Note the vaccination date, the product or formulation if it is on your record, when each symptom began and whether it is improving or worsening.
- Use the site or your clinician as a contact. Ask the vaccinating service or your healthcare provider about symptoms that are persistent, intensifying or difficult to interpret.
- Escalate emergencies immediately. Use 9-1-1 for hives with swelling, breathing trouble, severe dizziness, weakness or other signs of anaphylaxis; do not wait for a callback.
This process is for recognizing changes and getting appropriate care, not for self-diagnosing or assigning blame to the vaccine.
Injected vaccine versus nasal-spray vaccine
This article addresses an injected flu shot. A nasal-spray influenza vaccine has a different formulation and a different side-effect profile, so do not transfer the injected-vaccine list to the spray. Ask the vaccination provider which product you received and request its current information statement if you need product-specific expectations.
When to discuss vaccination before the next dose
Tell the clinician about any serious allergic reaction to a prior influenza vaccine or to a vaccine component, a history of GBS within six weeks of a previous flu vaccination and any current illness. CDC’s 2025–26 seasonal recommendations also identify moderate or severe acute illness as a precaution for relevant vaccine formulations. The appropriate choice can depend on the formulation, the severity and timing of illness and your individual medical history.

| What you notice | Best next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mild sore arm, redness, swelling, headache, low-grade fever, aches, nausea or fatigue | Observe the course and follow instructions from the vaccination service; contact a clinician if it persists, worsens or concerns you. | These are listed CDC reactions and are generally mild and short-lived, without a fixed guaranteed duration. |
| Hives, facial or throat swelling, trouble breathing, fast heartbeat with feeling unwell, dizziness or weakness | Call 9-1-1 or reach a hospital immediately. | These can indicate a severe allergic reaction. |
| Dizziness, vision changes or ringing in the ears around the injection | Tell the vaccinator immediately and sit or lie down safely. | Fainting can follow medical procedures and should be managed where staff can assess you. |
| Progressive weakness, tingling, trouble walking or breathing | Seek urgent medical assessment. | These neurological symptoms need evaluation and cannot be diagnosed from a vaccine article. |
| Any persistent, worsening or otherwise worrying illness | Contact a healthcare provider. | Another infection or medical condition may be responsible. |
Questions a clinician may ask
When you call, be ready to provide your age, relevant medical conditions, the vaccine date and formulation if known, allergies, previous vaccine reactions, the exact symptoms, their onset and whether they are changing. Mention breathing difficulty, fainting, neurological weakness, pregnancy or immune-system conditions when relevant. Clear timing helps the clinician decide whether you need emergency evaluation, same-day advice or routine follow-up.
Bottom line for readers
For most people receiving an injected flu vaccine, a sore or swollen arm, headache, fever, muscle aches, nausea or fatigue is an expected, generally mild response. There is no CDC-promised timetable that every reaction follows. Treat breathing trouble, facial or throat swelling, hives, severe dizziness, weakness or a fast heartbeat as an emergency and call 9-1-1. For anything persistent, worsening or worrying—and for a history of GBS after a prior flu vaccine—get individualized medical advice.
This is general U.S. health information based on CDC consumer guidance, the January 31, 2025 inactivated influenza Vaccine Information Statement, CDC flu-vaccine safety information and 2025–26 seasonal recommendations. It is not an individual diagnosis or a substitute for a healthcare professional who can examine you.
