First check whether your goals, time horizon, cash needs, emergency reserves or ability to tolerate losses have changed. If your personal plan is still appropriate, avoid turning a market-timing guess into a major portfolio move.
If your circumstances or intended asset mix have changed, make a deliberate adjustment—usually by rebalancing or changing future contributions—rather than reacting to headlines. The goal is to keep risk aligned with your life, not to predict the next market high or low.

Start by separating a market fear from a personal change
A long rally can make a downturn feel inevitable. It can also make a portfolio more aggressive than you intended because shares have risen faster than bonds or cash. Those are reasons to review your plan, not proof that a bull market is ending on a particular date. The investor guidance reviewed for this article does not establish the current status of a bull market or provide a reliable turning-point forecast.

- Goal: Are you saving for a near-term home purchase, tuition bill or other spending goal, or for a distant retirement?
- Time horizon: When will you need to withdraw this money? A portfolio for spending in two years has different requirements from one intended for several decades.
- Income and liquidity: Has your job, business income or expected spending changed? Do you have an emergency reserve outside your investments?
- Risk tolerance: Could you stay invested through a substantial decline without abandoning your plan?
- Risk capacity: Even if you are emotionally comfortable with losses, can your finances withstand them without forcing a sale?
Investor.gov explains that an appropriate mix of stocks, bonds, cash and other assets depends on time horizon and risk tolerance. Your goals and liquidity needs make the framework personal; there is no regulator-approved allocation that fits everyone.

Inspect the portfolio you actually own
Before changing anything, make a current inventory. List each account and holding, then group the holdings by broad asset class and by the risks they share. Include workplace plans, individual retirement accounts, taxable accounts and cash held elsewhere when you assess your overall exposure.
Compare current weights with your intended allocation
Write down the allocation you chose for your plan—for example, the target percentages for stocks, bonds and cash. Then calculate the current percentages using current market values. A rising stock market may have pushed a portfolio above its stock target even though you made no new investment decision.
For illustration, a portfolio designed as 60% stocks and 40% bonds might become 72% stocks and 28% bonds after a strong equity run. That drift does not predict a fall. It simply means the portfolio no longer matches the risk level the investor selected.

Look through funds for concentration and overlap
Holding several funds does not automatically create diversification. Two funds can own many of the same companies, sectors or countries. Review each fund’s holdings, geographic exposure, credit quality and interest-rate sensitivity. Diversification can reduce reliance on one investment or category, but it cannot guarantee gains or prevent losses.
Check liquidity before taking risk
Money needed soon should not depend on a favorable market exit. Separate an emergency reserve and near-term spending cash from long-term investments. If selling investments would be the only way to pay a known bill, your allocation may be too aggressive for that goal even if the market outlook is positive.
Rebalance only to a plan, not to a prediction
Rebalancing means bringing a portfolio back toward its chosen allocation after market movements change the weights. It is a risk-control process, not a claim that an underperforming asset will rebound or that an expensive asset must fall.

Investor.gov notes that some investors rebalance on a regular calendar schedule while others use percentage bands. It does not prescribe one universal interval. A provider example from Vanguard uses a 5% allocation drift as a possible trigger; that is an example of provider guidance, not a regulator-set sell signal.

Three practical ways to rebalance
| Method | How it works | When it can help |
|---|---|---|
| Sell overweight assets | Sell enough of categories above target and buy categories below target. | Useful when the portfolio has materially drifted and account consequences are acceptable. |
| Direct new contributions | Send new deposits to underweight categories instead of selling existing holdings. | Can reduce trading and may be useful in retirement or workplace accounts where regular contributions continue. |
| Change contribution allocations | Adjust the percentages used for future payroll or automatic investments. | Helps correct drift gradually while preserving the existing holdings. |
Choose the method that restores your intended risk with the least unnecessary cost and disruption. In a taxable account, selling can create capital gains or losses; the tax result depends on your basis, holding period, jurisdiction and other transactions. Account rules, transaction fees and restrictions also vary. Review those details before placing an order, and obtain individualized tax or financial advice when the amounts are significant or the situation is complicated.
When a genuine life change justifies a new allocation
Rebalancing returns you to an existing plan. A new allocation is different: it changes the plan because your circumstances or ability to take risk has changed.

Approaching a spending date
If you will need a large withdrawal soon, consider whether the portion earmarked for that expense can withstand a market decline. A shorter horizon generally leaves less time to recover from losses. A staged plan that separates near-term cash from longer-term growth assets can make the withdrawal schedule clearer.
Income or employment has become less secure
A job loss, variable business income or a new caregiving obligation can reduce your risk capacity. Revisit emergency savings and upcoming obligations before deciding how much of your portfolio can remain exposed to volatile assets.
Your willingness to tolerate losses has changed
People sometimes discover their real tolerance only during a decline. If you would be unable to stay invested through the losses your allocation could produce, a measured reduction in risk may be appropriate. Make that decision after considering your full plan, not during a sudden market drop.

Understand what market timing can cost
The joint SEC, CFTC, FINRA, NASAA and NFA investor bulletin dated October 5, 2026, warns: “Chasing returns through short-term trading or trying to ‘time the market’ might lead to buying when an investment has reached all-time highs and selling when the market is falling, which can result in reduced investment returns.” The problem is not merely guessing the top. You must also decide when to re-enter, and the strongest recovery days can occur before the news feels reassuring.
The SEC has separately cautioned investors against rash changes during volatility. Former SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance Director Lori Schock summarized the long-term principle as: “It’s time in the market that counts, not timing the market.” That principle does not require keeping an unsuitable allocation; it means that a forecast based only on sentiment is not a dependable replacement for a plan.
Compare ways to manage the portfolio
You can maintain an allocation yourself, use an automated target-date or lifecycle fund, or work with a professional adviser. These are different decision systems, not guaranteed-return choices.
| Approach | Who chooses and maintains the mix | How it handles changing goals | Questions to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-managed portfolio | You select holdings, monitor drift and place trades. | You must update the allocation when your horizon, spending needs or risk tolerance changes. | Do you have the time, knowledge and discipline to follow written rules during volatility? Review overlap, fees, taxes and account limits. |
| Target-date or lifecycle fund | The fund manager sets a glide path and generally rebalances automatically, often becoming more conservative near the target date. | The glide path is designed around the stated target year; it does not know your other assets, income or unusual cash needs. | Compare the fund’s glide path, underlying holdings, fees, tax treatment and whether the target date matches your actual plan. |
| Professional advice | An adviser helps select and maintain an allocation under an agreed service and fee arrangement. | Ongoing planning can incorporate changes in goals, taxes, insurance, income and withdrawals. | Verify credentials, services, fiduciary obligations where relevant, total fees, conflicts and the adviser’s location and regulatory framework. |
A target-date fund can reduce the number of allocation decisions you make, but the label alone does not establish that it is suitable. Funds with the same target year can have different glide paths, holdings and fees. Professional advice can provide planning support; it cannot reliably identify market tops.
A step-by-step decision process
- Write the purpose of each account. Note the goal, expected withdrawal date and amount needed.
- Secure cash needs. Confirm that emergency savings and near-term obligations are covered without relying on a market sale.
- Record the intended allocation. Include the target percentages for broad asset classes and any limits you set for concentrated positions.
- Measure current exposure. Use current balances and look through funds for duplicated holdings or hidden concentration.
- Identify the cause of any mismatch. Decide whether drift came from market movements, new contributions or a genuine change in your circumstances.
- Select the least disruptive correction. Consider directing future contributions first, then rebalancing trades if needed.
- Check taxes, fees and account rules. Confirm the consequences before selling, particularly in taxable accounts or accounts with withdrawal restrictions.
- Document the rule. Record your target allocation, review frequency or drift band and the life events that would trigger a reassessment.
- Automate what you can follow. Automatic contributions and scheduled reviews can reduce decisions made in response to headlines.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Going all-cash because the rally feels old: This converts an unverified forecast into a permanent allocation decision and creates a second timing decision about re-entry.
- Chasing the latest winner: Recent performance does not establish that an asset belongs in your long-term plan.
- Assuming more funds means more diversification: Overlapping holdings can leave the portfolio concentrated despite a long list of fund names.
- Using a universal percentage as an order to sell: A 5% drift example is provider guidance, not a rule that applies to every investor.
- Ignoring taxes and account restrictions: A theoretically correct trade can have an unacceptable tax bill, fee or penalty.
- Changing risk during a panic: Decisions made while prices are moving sharply may not reflect your goals or capacity to withstand losses.
- Assuming a target-date label solves every problem: The fund cannot account for your outside assets, specific spending schedule or personal tax circumstances without your review.
When individualized help is worth considering
Consider qualified, individualized advice if you are near retirement, managing a large taxable gain, coordinating several account types, handling an inheritance, or balancing investment decisions with taxes, insurance or estate planning. Ask how the professional is paid, what services are included, whether they have fiduciary obligations where applicable, and which regulator or credentialing body oversees them. Advice should help you implement a suitable plan, not promise a market call.
A market concern is useful when it prompts this disciplined review. It is not evidence that you can know the next turning point. Keep the allocation tied to the life it is meant to fund, correct drift according to written rules, and make changes only when the plan or your circumstances—not the headline—has changed.
