What to Do With Old Nest Gadgets After Google Ended Support

Google’s October 25, 2025 support cutoff affects only three early Nest Learning Thermostat models—not every old Nest device. The 2011 first-generation, 2012 second-generation and 2014 European second-generation thermostats were removed from the Nest and Google Home apps, lost remote and Assistant control, and stopped receiving software and security updates. Their wall units can still run heating and cooling schedules locally. Identify your model first, then decide whether local-only use, replacement, transfer or recycling is the safest option.

Which Nest thermostats stopped receiving support?

Google’s sunset took effect on October 25, 2025. It covers:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The first-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, launched in 2011.
  • The second-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, launched in 2012.
  • The European second-generation model released in 2014.

Google says these thermostats are unpaired and removed from the Nest and Google Home apps. You can no longer control them remotely from a phone or with Google Assistant, and they receive no further software or security updates. The thermostat itself is not necessarily electrically dead: its display and physical controls can still be used to change the temperature and edit schedules.

“You will no longer be able to control them remotely from your phone or with Google Assistant, but can still adjust the temperature and modify schedules directly on the thermostat.” — Google Nest Community support-change announcement, 2025

  • Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
  • Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
  • See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
  • See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.

Do not assume that every older-looking Nest is affected. Google’s redesigned Home app continues to support Nest Thermostats launched in 2015 or later, subject to the device and account setup required by Google.

Identify the model before removing it

Removing a thermostat before recording its setup can make a replacement harder to install. Confirm the generation and region first, using the model information shown on the thermostat, its packaging or the Google account that originally registered it.

  1. Check the launch generation. The 2011 first generation, 2012 second generation and 2014 European second generation are the affected variants. A 2015-or-newer model is not included in this specific sunset notice.
  2. Photograph every wire. Take a clear picture of the terminals and labels before disconnecting anything. HVAC wiring differs by system, and a European installation may not match North American conventions.
  3. Record the configuration. Write down the current temperature schedule, comfort settings, away routines and any equipment options shown in the thermostat menus.
  4. List integrations. Note automations or third-party services that depended on Nest data. Google’s earlier Works with Nest transition demonstrated that integrations may require migration to Google Home or Assistant rather than continuing unchanged.

Option 1: Keep the thermostat as a local controller

If the HVAC system is operating normally and you accept the loss of connected features, the affected thermostat can remain on the wall as a manually controlled programmable thermostat. You can adjust set points and schedules at the device.

This is a deliberate local-only choice, not a way to restore the cloud service. Remote monitoring, phone control, Assistant commands and future security fixes are unavailable. Anyone who needs to change the temperature while away, verify that heating or cooling is running, or receive connected alerts should not rely on this arrangement.

Google Nest Hub 7” Smart Display with Google Assistant (1st Gen) - Chalk (Bulk Packaging)
  • Google Nest Hub 1st Gen H1A – 7-inch smart display with Google Assistant built in for hands-free help, smart home control, entertainment, and daily organization.
  • Korean Spec Model – International/Korean version of the Google Nest Hub H1A. Language can be changed to English after setup through the Google Home app/device settings.
  • Smart Home Control – Use voice commands or the touchscreen to control compatible smart lights, cameras, thermostats, plugs, speakers, and other Google Assistant devices.
  • Entertainment & Daily Help – Stream music, watch videos, view Google Photos, check weather, set timers, manage reminders, follow recipes, and get answers hands-free.
  • Compact 7" Display Design – Great for kitchens, bedrooms, desks, offices, counters, and nightstands with a clean modern smart display design.
  • Keep the thermostat only if local controls meet the household’s needs.
  • Check the display and schedule after a power interruption or HVAC service visit.
  • Arrange a replacement if the lack of security updates is unacceptable or the unit begins showing hardware faults.

Option 2: Replace it with a supported thermostat

Google’s cited trade-in route directs eligible owners toward the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) and advertises $50 off for qualifying trade-ins. The offer is not universal: verify the current country, eligibility rules, purchase window, inventory, HVAC compatibility and installation requirements before relying on the discount.

Before buying any replacement, check whether your system uses conventional heating and cooling, a heat pump, dual fuel, multi-stage equipment, a humidifier or dehumidifier, or another accessory. Confirm that the new thermostat supports the required wiring and that a common wire, power adapter or professional installation is needed. Do not infer compatibility from the old Nest’s wiring alone.

Option 3: Choose a standards-based replacement

Matter is designed to let compatible smart-home devices work across participating ecosystems rather than tying them to one vendor’s cloud. A Matter thermostat can be a sensible way to reduce platform lock-in, but Matter does not eliminate setup requirements. You still need a compatible controller or hub, a supported phone app and a thermostat rated for your HVAC equipment and region.

Decision factor What to verify Why it matters
Local operation Whether temperature changes and schedules work without an internet connection A cloud outage should not remove basic heating or cooling control.
Security support Published update policy and the date support begins Google’s current policy states a minimum of five years of automatic critical security updates from the date a connected Nest device starts selling in the US Google Store; a different manufacturer may define coverage differently.
HVAC compatibility Voltage, terminals, stages, heat-pump mode and regional wiring rules An apparently similar thermostat may not safely control the same equipment.
Interoperability Matter support, required hub and preferred smart-home platform Standards support can make a later platform change easier, but only with compatible hardware.
Connected features Remote control, alerts, automations and any subscription requirement Some camera or AI features may depend on a paid plan even when basic controls remain available.
End-of-life handling Trade-in terms and local electronics-recycling rules Connected electronics and batteries should not go into ordinary household rubbish.

What happens to older Nest cameras, doorbells, Protect and Yale Lock devices?

The thermostat sunset is not a blanket shutdown of every Nest product. Google’s October 2025 Home-app announcement says the app supports smoke and carbon-monoxide alerts from Nest Protect, passcode management for Nest x Yale Lock, and controls for previous-generation Nest cameras and doorbells.

Some cameras can be transferred from the Nest app to Google Home. After transfer, live video is viewed in Google Home or Google Home for web. Transferability depends on the specific camera and account, so check the device’s migration instructions before deleting the Nest app or resetting hardware. A reset can erase configuration that is difficult to recreate.

Nest Protect has a separate physical end-of-life limit

Nest Protect’s support status is different from the thermostat software sunset. Check the replacement date printed on the alarm. The second-generation Protect was described by Google in 2015 as having an up to 10-year carbon-monoxide-sensor lifetime. An alarm at its replacement date should be removed from service even if it still powers on.

Take an expired Protect to a designated collection point. Local electronics-waste rules determine the correct drop-off route, and availability varies by country and municipality. Do not place an expired smoke or carbon-monoxide alarm in regular rubbish unless local authorities specifically instruct you to do so.

A practical disposal and upgrade checklist

  1. Inventory the device. Record the exact model, generation, region and serial information before uninstalling it.
  2. Preserve settings. Photograph wiring, copy schedules and document routines or integrations.
  3. Choose the operating mode. Keep an affected thermostat for local-only control, replace it for remote access and updates, or select a compatible Matter model.
  4. Check the offer and installation. If using the advertised $50 trade-in route, confirm eligibility and current terms; verify HVAC compatibility before purchase.
  5. Transfer supported devices. Move eligible cameras to Google Home before removing accounts or resetting equipment, and confirm where live video and alerts will appear.
  6. Recycle responsibly. Use Google’s recycling assistance for affected thermostats when available and designated collection points for expired Nest Protect units. Follow local waste rules.

The bottom line for each device

  • Affected early thermostat: still usable at the wall, but disconnected from apps and Assistant and no longer updated.
  • 2015-or-newer Nest thermostat: not covered by this particular October 2025 cutoff; verify its current Home-app support and account setup.
  • Previous-generation camera or doorbell: controls remain available in Google Home, and eligible cameras can be transferred from Nest.
  • Nest Protect: follow the printed replacement date and recycle an expired alarm, regardless of whether its app alerts still appear.
  • Nest x Yale Lock: Google’s Home-app announcement continues to list passcode management, but confirm the current device-account connection before making changes.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
