Support is model-specific: age, price and brand alone do not tell you whether updates have ended. If security support has ended, remove the tablet from banking, primary email, password management, work accounts and other sensitive services. Keep it only for a low-stakes role, preferably offline, or prepare it for responsible reuse or recycling.
A factory reset removes your personal data for the next owner; it does not install missing security patches or make obsolete software safe for unrestricted internet use.

Decide whether the tablet is still supported
Open the manufacturer’s support site and search by the exact model number, not merely a product family name such as “10-inch tablet.” The model number is usually printed on the back, on the original packaging, or under Settings in an About tablet, About device or similarly named screen. Record the operating-system version, security-patch date and any stated end-of-support date.
Support periods and update frequency can differ substantially between models from the same company and between devices sold at similar prices. The US Federal Trade Commission reported this variation in a 2018 mobile-security update report; that report is useful context, not a current lookup for your particular tablet. Do not infer support status from how old the hardware feels.

What “no longer gets updates” means
- Operating-system updates stopped, but security patches continue: the tablet may remain suitable for normal use while the manufacturer still fixes vulnerabilities.
- Security patches stopped: newly discovered weaknesses will not receive vendor fixes. Risk generally increases over time, even if the tablet still turns on and apps still open.
- The manufacturer’s status is unclear: treat the device as unconfirmed until you verify the model and patch information. Contact support or consult the model’s official documentation rather than relying on forum posts.
Keep a screenshot or note of the last patch date and support statement. It helps you make a deliberate decision and accurately describe the device if you pass it on.
Is an unsupported tablet safe to use?
There is no risk-free way to keep using obsolete software. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) states in its organizational guidance, published 29 June 2021 and reviewed 13 May 2025, version 2.1: “The only fully effective way to mitigate this risk is to stop using the obsolete product.” That guidance is written for organizations, so a consumer’s risk depends on the device, network and tasks, but its central principle applies: fewer untrusted inputs and less sensitive data reduce exposure.
An unsupported tablet is not automatically compromised the day support ends. The problem is that vulnerabilities can continue to be discovered after fixes stop arriving. A reset, antivirus app or new screen lock cannot turn an unsupported operating system into a supported one.

Keep sensitive services off the device
Do not use an obsolete tablet for banking, payments, primary email, password storage, work systems, health portals, government accounts or any service whose takeover would cause serious harm. Remove saved passwords, browser sessions and account tokens. If the tablet remains connected to Wi-Fi, avoid unfamiliar websites, unsolicited links and files from unknown sources. Do not use it as the only device for an authenticator or recovery code; move those arrangements to a supported device first.
Reduce network exposure
If a task does not need connectivity, enable airplane mode and turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off. For a connected task, use a separate network where practical and avoid entering credentials. These steps reduce opportunities for attack but do not eliminate the underlying software vulnerabilities.
Useful low-risk roles for an old tablet
Reuse is reasonable when the tablet runs reliably, the battery is not swollen or dangerously degraded, and the task can remain low-stakes. These are practical uses, not security endorsements.

Offline reading
Download books, manuals or travel documents on a supported computer or phone, transfer them by cable or removable storage, and read them with the tablet offline. Avoid signing into a reading account on the obsolete device if local files are sufficient.

Store music, podcasts or videos locally and disable network radios during playback. Streaming apps may stop supporting the old operating system, and installing unofficial versions can introduce additional risk.
Photo display or simple reference screen
Load a folder of family photographs, recipes, workshop instructions or other material that does not require an account. Keep the device disconnected when it is functioning only as a display.

Other suitable offline tasks
- Displaying downloaded maps during travel.
- Reading PDFs, sheet music or classroom material already stored on the device.
- Using a basic timer, calculator or camera without cloud synchronization.
Stop using the tablet if the battery becomes swollen, unusually hot, physically damaged or unable to hold a safe charge. A failing battery is a hardware hazard independent of software support.
Compare your three practical options

How to prepare an old tablet for another person
Use this sequence before donating, handing down or selling. The labels differ among Android tablets, iPads and other systems, so use the exact manufacturer instructions for your model.

- Back up wanted material. Copy photographs, documents, downloads and notes to a supported computer or approved cloud account. Open several files from the backup to confirm they are usable.
- Remove removable media. Power down and take out the SIM card and microSD card if fitted. A reset may not erase data stored on a removable card. Keep or securely erase cards separately.
- Unlink accounts. Sign out of the device’s Apple, Google or other manufacturer account, then remove the tablet from account dashboards and trusted-device lists. This prevents activation locks and stops the old tablet from remaining an approved sign-in device.
- Move authentication access. Transfer authenticator apps, passkeys, recovery codes and security keys to a supported device. Confirm that the replacement method works before deleting the old one.
- Remove management and payment data. Delete work or school management profiles, transit cards, payment cards, eSIM plans and browser autofill information where applicable. An organization-owned tablet may require its administrator to release it first.
- Factory-reset through the maker’s instructions. On many devices this is under Settings followed by System, General management or Transfer or Reset, but menu names vary. Keep the tablet powered and connected to its charger during the process.
- Verify the result. Restart it and confirm that it reaches the initial welcome or setup screen, not your home screen. Do not sign back in merely to demonstrate that it works.
- Describe its condition honestly. State the model number, operating-system version, last known security-patch date, battery behavior, included accessories and the fact that vendor support has ended or is limited.
The FTC’s January 2025 consumer transfer guidance for phones recommends backing up data, removing SIM and memory cards, unlinking accounts and resetting before transfer. The same precautions apply to tablets, but the tablet maker’s own reset procedure takes priority.

Donation: when it is appropriate and when it is not
Donate only when the tablet is erased, functional and suitable for the recipient’s real needs. A device that is adequate as an offline reader may be a poor choice for a child who needs current educational apps, or for a school that requires a supported browser and security controls.
For schools and children
Ask the receiving organization what operating-system versions, apps, accessibility features and network controls it requires. In England, Department for Education guidance on donated devices (19 April 2020) emphasizes preparation and safeguarding and points organizations toward NCSC advice. A school or family should be able to apply age-appropriate accounts, content controls and supervision before the tablet is connected.
The UK IT Reuse for Good Charter, updated 2 October 2026, describes an organization-focused reuse-first approach built around secure wiping, refurbishment and fit-for-purpose donation. It is a UK framework, not a universal consumer drop-off service, and does not make every unsupported tablet suitable for donation.
When recycling is the better answer
Recycle the tablet if it cannot run a meaningful low-risk task, is physically damaged, has a swollen battery, cannot be securely reset, or would mislead a recipient about its online safety. Look for the manufacturer’s take-back service, a municipal e-waste collection point or a reputable electronics retailer’s recycling program. Availability depends on your location.
Follow local instructions for lithium batteries, especially if the tablet is damaged or swollen. Do not place electronics in ordinary household trash where local rules prohibit it. The US Environmental Protection Agency advises that responsible donation and recycling can conserve natural resources and should be carried out through safe, appropriate channels.

- Have you verified the exact model and last security-update date?
- Is the battery physically safe and adequate for the intended role?
- Can the remaining task stay offline or avoid sensitive information?
- Have you backed up files and tested the backup?
- Have you removed SIM and SD cards, accounts, trusted-device access and authenticator links?
- Can the tablet be factory-reset and verified at the setup screen?
- Can the recipient use it safely and effectively, or is recognized recycling more appropriate?
