What to do when your Windows PC no longer receives security updates

Do not keep using an unsupported Windows installation as if nothing changed. First identify the Windows version and edition, then check whether the computer can upgrade to Windows 11. Eligible Windows 10 Home and Pro PCs can move to the equivalent Windows 11 edition at no charge. If the hardware is not eligible, replace the computer with a Windows 11 system or use Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) as a limited bridge when available. Back up your files before any upgrade, ESU enrollment, or replacement.

What it means when Windows stops receiving security updates

End of support does not normally switch the computer off. Microsoft says an unsupported PC can continue to start and run, but Microsoft no longer provides operating-system software updates, including security fixes and ordinary bug fixes. Newly discovered weaknesses therefore remain unpatched on that installation, increasing exposure to malware, credential theft and other attacks.

Antivirus software can reduce some risks, but it cannot recreate the security fixes built into Windows. Treat antivirus as one layer of protection, not as a replacement for a supported Windows release.

Windows 10’s consumer support date

For the Windows 10 editions covered by Microsoft’s lifecycle guidance, version 22H2 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. That date is not a universal date for every Windows computer: older releases have their own lifecycle schedules, and some long-term-servicing editions follow separate terms.

Older Windows versions have different dates

Windows version End-of-support date listed by Microsoft
Windows 10 version 22H2 and specified editions October 14, 2025
Windows 8.1 January 10, 2023
Windows 7 January 14, 2020
Windows XP April 8, 2014

Check the actual version and edition on the PC instead of assuming that every Windows machine shares the Windows 10 date.

What to do first

  1. Identify the installation. Open Settings and go to System followed by About to read the Windows edition and version. You can also type winver in the taskbar search box and note the version shown.
  2. Install any remaining updates. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10 and select Check for updates. Updates offered there do not extend the product’s end-of-support date, but installing them ensures the machine is current before you make a transition.
  3. Check Windows 11 compatibility. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app or compare the computer with the official Windows 11 system requirements. Windows Update may also display an upgrade offer when an eligible Windows 10 PC is detected.
  4. Make a separate backup. Copy irreplaceable documents, photos, project files, browser data and authentication information before changing the operating system or replacing the computer. A backup that has not been tested should not be your only copy.

Do not buy replacement parts on the assumption that they will make an unsupported computer eligible. Microsoft recommends asking the computer manufacturer or a qualified local hardware professional whether a change is possible; compatibility depends on the complete system, not one component alone.

Choose the supported path that fits your situation

Path Who it suits Support and cost considerations Main effort or limitation
Upgrade to Windows 11 A Windows 10 Home or Pro PC that passes the compatibility check Free for an eligible PC moving to the equivalent edition Back up first; verify applications, peripherals and accessibility tools
Buy a Windows 11 PC A computer that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, or someone ready for new hardware Hardware purchase cost varies by workload and configuration Move files, reinstall applications and check peripheral compatibility
Consumer Windows 10 ESU Eligible personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 devices needing a temporary bridge Limited security coverage through October 12, 2027; enrollment method and price vary by region No new features or normal technical support; organization-managed devices are excluded
Organization or school IT process A managed or enterprise-licensed computer Uses the organization’s commercial licensing and support arrangements Consumer ESU terms do not apply; contact the administrator

How to upgrade an eligible PC to Windows 11

Confirm eligibility before starting

Use PC Health Check or Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements page. If the result says the PC is eligible, open Windows Update and look for the Windows 11 upgrade offer. The free entitlement applies to eligible Windows 10 Home and Pro devices upgrading to the equivalent Windows 11 edition; it is not a promise that every Windows 10 computer qualifies.

Prepare the computer

  • Connect the computer to reliable power, especially a laptop.
  • Keep sufficient free storage for the installation and rollback files.
  • Back up personal data and confirm that the backup can be opened from another device.
  • Check the publisher’s compatibility information for essential applications, printers, scanners, accessibility devices and security tools.
  • Make sure you know the passwords or recovery methods for your Microsoft account and other important services.

Start from Windows Update

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and read the Windows 11 eligibility or upgrade message if it appears.
  3. Choose the offered upgrade and follow the restart and installation prompts.
  4. After the first login, open Windows Update again, install all offered updates and restart until no further updates are pending.
  5. Test essential applications, printers, audio, displays and accessibility settings before deleting the previous installation or backup.

If Windows Update does not offer Windows 11, do not infer that a workaround is safe. Recheck the result in PC Health Check and use the replacement or ESU paths instead. A manual installation can require reinstalling applications and moving files, data and settings; do not assume that every installation method preserves everything automatically.

When replacing the computer is the better choice

A new Windows 11 laptop or desktop is the straightforward supported option when the current hardware fails the compatibility check, is unreliable, or cannot handle the applications you need. Choose the computer around your actual work rather than the operating-system label alone.

  • Workload: Match processor, memory and storage to office work, creative applications, development tools or other demanding software.
  • Portability: A laptop may be preferable for travel, while a desktop can make future repairs or peripheral connections easier.
  • Accessibility: Confirm screen, keyboard, touch, audio and assistive-technology requirements before purchase.
  • Peripherals: Check drivers and physical connectors for printers, scanners, displays, docks and specialist equipment.
  • Migration: Plan time to sign in to applications, restore files and recreate settings rather than treating the first boot as the end of the move.

Back up the old computer before recycling, trading it in or handing it to someone else. Use a secure wipe or the manufacturer’s reset process after you have verified that the new system contains everything you need.

Windows 10 Consumer ESU: what it covers and who can use it

Consumer Extended Security Updates are a bridge, not a return to normal Windows 10 support. Microsoft’s current guidance says eligible personal-use devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 can enroll through a built-in tool in Settings. The program is available in most markets where Windows is offered to individuals, but regional terms and timing can differ, including in the European Economic Area.

Current enrollment options

Enrollment method Listed requirement or cost Important qualification
Sync PC settings No additional cost Availability depends on the account and region shown in Settings
Microsoft Rewards points 1,000 points Requires the points option to be offered for that account and market
One-time purchase USD $30 or local-currency equivalent, plus applicable tax Price and checkout terms can vary by region

Regardless of when an eligible device enrolls, Microsoft’s stated end date for these consumer security updates is October 12, 2027. An existing enrolled license can be used on up to 10 devices under the stated program terms. Recheck the enrollment screen and local Microsoft guidance before paying because availability and terms can change.

What ESU includes

  • Critical and important security updates for the eligible Windows 10 installation.
  • Assistance with ESU activation and installation.

What ESU does not include

  • New Windows features.
  • Customer-requested, non-security changes.
  • Ordinary Windows technical support.
  • Eligibility for organization-managed or enterprise-licensed computers under the consumer program.

If the computer belongs to an employer, school or other organization, ask its IT administrator about the commercial ESU process. Do not enroll a managed device under consumer assumptions.

Back up and move your files safely

Microsoft points to Windows Backup with OneDrive for moving files, photos, settings and applications between computers. It also identifies an external hard drive or USB key as a practical way to copy files. Cloud synchronization and an external drive solve different problems: synchronization helps restore supported data after sign-in, while an external copy gives you an independent recovery path when an account or internet connection is unavailable.

  1. List the folders and applications that matter, including files stored outside the usual Documents and Pictures folders.
  2. Copy the data to your chosen backup location and wait for synchronization or copying to finish.
  3. Open several files from the backup location and check dates, file sizes and photos before changing Windows.
  4. Export or record application-specific data, such as email archives, password-manager recovery information and software licenses, using each application’s own instructions.
  5. After upgrading or replacing the PC, restore the files, reinstall applications from their legitimate sources and test the result before wiping the old device.

A backup protects your data; it does not supply missing Windows security patches. Keep that distinction clear when deciding whether ESU, an upgrade or a replacement is still necessary.

Microsoft 365 and Office support are separate questions

Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Apps continue to function on Windows 10 and that security updates for those apps are planned through October 10, 2028. That app-support commitment does not extend Windows 10’s own operating-system security support. Microsoft still recommends moving to Windows 11 over time to avoid performance and reliability problems.

Office 2016 and Office 2019 support has ended across operating systems. Office 2021, Office LTSC 2021, Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 can continue to run on Windows 10, but Microsoft no longer supports those products in that Windows 10 configuration. Check the lifecycle for the exact Office product you use before relying on it for a work or compliance requirement.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming the PC will stop working immediately

Unsupported Windows normally continues to boot, which can make the change easy to ignore. The risk is the absence of future fixes, not an instant shutdown. Set a transition deadline rather than waiting for a visible failure.

Using antivirus as the entire plan

Antivirus can help detect threats, but Microsoft explicitly says it cannot replace ongoing Windows security updates. Keep security software current while moving to a supported operating system.

Paying for ESU without checking eligibility

Consumer ESU is for personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 devices and excludes organization-managed and enterprise-licensed systems. Confirm the edition, version and management status in Settings before selecting an enrollment method.

Upgrading without a recovery copy

An upgrade may preserve much of an installation, but a manual installation or replacement can require application reinstallation and data migration. Verify a separate backup first, and retain it until every important task works on the new system.

A practical decision checklist

  • Identify the Windows version and edition.
  • Check Windows 11 eligibility with PC Health Check or Windows Update.
  • If eligible, schedule the free Windows 11 upgrade and test applications afterward.
  • If ineligible, compare the cost and capabilities of a Windows 11 replacement computer.
  • If more transition time is essential, check whether consumer ESU appears for the personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 device.
  • If the PC is managed by an organization, stop and ask IT about its supported path.
  • Back up files before every upgrade, replacement or reset.
  • Keep antivirus, browsers and applications updated while the transition is underway, but do not treat them as substitutes for Windows security updates.

The bottom line

Windows 10’s October 14, 2025 support end date is a decision point, not a power-off event. Check compatibility first: an eligible Home or Pro PC can upgrade to Windows 11 for free. An incompatible machine should be replaced, while eligible personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 devices may use Consumer ESU through October 12, 2027 as a temporary, security-only bridge. Back up before making any change, and handle managed computers through the organization’s IT process.
