Confirm the inactive news, check whether the direct backup is available, and review your league’s waiver and lineup deadlines. Then compare the backup and other available receivers by likely playing time, repeatable opportunity, roster fit and matchup. Use waiver priority or FAAB only if the expected help is worth spending that limited resource.
What should you do first?
- Confirm the player is officially ruled out. Do not make a time-sensitive claim based only on uncertainty about an injury.
- Check the direct backup and other receivers who could benefit. The backup is a sensible first place to look, but availability by itself does not make someone a good claim. NFL.com recommends looking for players who may get more playing time and opportunity than the players already on your roster (NFL Fantasy 101: Learning the waiver wire).
- Check your league’s claim processing and lineup lock. Platform defaults and league settings differ; confirm the actual schedule before deciding whether a claim or lineup change will take effect in time.
- Compare the best candidates with your roster. A waiver addition should address a real need, whether that is a replacement starter, useful depth or a player with a role that could last beyond this week.
How do you tell whether a receiver has a real opportunity?
Start with the role the absent receiver leaves behind. Consider whether a candidate is likely to play enough to matter and whether the offense has a plausible way to involve him. The available guidance supports judging playing time and opportunity, but it does not establish a universal routes, snaps or targets threshold that makes a receiver a claim or a start.

Look beyond one big box score
A strong recent performance can draw attention, but it does not prove that a player will keep seeing the field or receiving steady chances. NFL.com advises against using waiver priority on a spike in production when the player is not playing regularly or getting consistent opportunity (Fantasy 201: In-season roster management strategy). Ask what changed with the starter’s absence and whether that change creates a credible role for this receiver.

Separate a temporary fill-in from a lasting addition
If the absent starter may return soon, the replacement’s value could be concentrated in one game. If the opening could persist, the candidate may also help your bench later. Treat those as different kinds of claims: a one-week patch should generally solve an immediate lineup problem, while a potentially durable role may justify protecting or spending more of your waiver resources. The player’s actual outlook depends on information not specified by a general strategy guide.

How should you compare available receivers?
Use the same questions for each candidate rather than choosing the most recognizable name. Compare likely role first; then consider how useful that role is for your roster and scoring setup.
| What to compare | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Playing time and role | Is there a plausible path to meaningful playing time while the starter is out? |
| Opportunity and durability | Is the opportunity likely to continue, or does the case depend on one unusually productive game? |
| Roster fit | Would this receiver improve your likely starters or useful depth compared with the players already on your bench? |
| Scoring and lineup needs | How does the candidate fit your league’s scoring format and available lineup slots? |
| Upcoming schedule | Do upcoming opponents make the candidate more or less appealing, given the role he is likely to have? |
| Acquisition cost | Is this candidate’s expected value worth the priority position or FAAB you would use? |
| Timing | Will the claim process and any player lock happen before you need to set the lineup? |
Consider the matchup, but do not let it outweigh a weak or uncertain role. NFL.com recommends checking upcoming opponents, particularly when the player’s role already raises doubts. A favorable matchup cannot by itself establish that a receiver will get enough playing time or opportunity.

Should you use waiver priority or FAAB?
The answer depends on your league’s format and the value of the player, not on a universal bid formula. Waiver priority is a limited place in the claim order; FAAB is a season budget used for blind bids in the NFL.com description of the system (A beginner’s guide to Fantasy Football).
- Consider using priority when the receiver addresses an important need and you believe he offers more than a short-lived box-score spike. Account for the chance that a more valuable future claim may come along.
- Consider a meaningful FAAB bid when you expect the addition to help beyond one week or to fill a difficult roster need. FantasyPros’ 2024 strategy article recommends being more willing to spend on an early-season addition that could last, and more cautious with low-value, one-week streamers (FAAB Waiver Wire: Strategy & Advice). That is dated analyst advice, not a guaranteed optimal bid or a current market price.
- Keep the cost proportional to your need. If the candidate is unlikely to improve your lineup or bench, do not claim him simply because the starter is out.
The cited sources do not establish a universal FAAB percentage, bid amount, or priority value for this situation. Your budget, league size, remaining schedule and available alternatives all affect the trade-off.

Which waiver and lineup deadlines apply?
Do not assume every platform processes claims on the same day. NFL.com’s introductory guidance describes Tuesday claims with Wednesday processing as a common pattern, not a rule for every league. The NFL Fantasy Official Rules 2025 specify an initial weekly waiver run from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, with later nightly runs in a typical week; those timings apply to that platform edition. CBS Sports’ published rules describe that service’s own player-lock timing and waiver processing.
Use your league’s current settings and platform calendar for the actionable deadline. Also check whether a player becomes locked at kickoff or under another league-specific rule before relying on a late lineup change.
How do you make the final claim decision?
- Identify the actual need: Are you replacing a likely starter, adding depth or seeking a longer-term option?
- Rank candidates by role and repeatability: Favor a plausible path to playing time and continuing opportunity over a claim based solely on one strong performance.
- Apply your roster and scoring context: Compare each candidate with your bench and likely lineup under your league’s format.
- Use matchup as a secondary check: Let it distinguish otherwise similar options, not substitute for a credible role.
- Set a resource limit and verify timing: Decide what the player is worth in priority or FAAB, then check the league’s claim run and lineup lock before acting.
Without the absent receiver’s identity, the available player pool, scoring rules, roster construction and waiver settings, there is no reliable way to name a specific add or start. The best move is the available receiver whose likely opportunity solves your roster’s actual problem at a cost you are willing to pay.
