If your SSD is nearly full, first find out what is using the space, then remove only files you can replace or no longer need. Move important large files to compatible external or cloud storage rather than deleting them. Consider an internal upgrade only after checking that your computer supports one and that cleanup or external storage will not meet your needs.
Find what is taking up space
Check the storage breakdown before removing anything. The categories help identify whether the problem is downloads, applications, media, or another kind of data; the number alone does not tell you what is safe to delete.

Windows
Open Settings > System > Storage. Review the categories and large files. Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance covers Windows 10 and 11, though available screens can vary by version.
Mac
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open System Settings > General > Storage. Apple notes that storage categories update as you manage files. “System Data” is a broad category for Apple and third-party files that do not fit elsewhere; seeing it does not mean you should delete system files. See Apple’s guide to freeing storage space on Mac.

Clear space with low-risk cleanup
Start with content you recognize and can replace. Review Downloads, old device backups, unused apps, and media you can stream or download again. Empty the Trash on Mac or Recycle Bin on Windows when you are sure you no longer need its contents; items left there may continue using storage.
Windows cleanup tools
In Settings > System > Storage, open Cleanup recommendations and review each category before removing items. Storage Sense can clear temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. Disk Cleanup is another built-in option. Do not automatically remove a previous Windows installation: Microsoft warns that doing so removes the ability to return to the previous Windows version.

Mac cleanup
Use the Storage screen to identify large items, then remove only files and apps you recognize. Apple also suggests moving large Photos or iMovie libraries and other media to another storage device. Avoid deleting unfamiliar files from system folders or treating “System Data” as a cleanup target by itself.

Move files you want to keep
If a large file matters but does not need to live on the internal drive, move it rather than delete it. Video, photo archives, and completed project files are common candidates. Apple describes using another storage device for large media libraries; Microsoft also documents external storage as an option when Windows needs more room for an update.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
- External drive: Choose an external SSD for portability and quick access, or consider an HDD for an archive that is mostly stored away. Check that the drive’s connector and file system work with your computer and intended devices.
- Cloud or on-demand storage: Services such as OneDrive Files On-Demand can leave a smaller local placeholder while the full file remains online. Files may require an internet connection to open, and cloud accounts have storage limits.
- Keep a separate backup: A moved file is not safely backed up just because it is on an external drive. Keep another copy of irreplaceable files, preferably on a separate device or backup service.
For a modest set of files you still want readily available, a portable external SSD is one practical category to consider. The right capacity depends on the files you are moving; there is no single size that suits every library.
Keep enough room for the task you need to do
Do not rely on a universal free-space percentage. For Windows updates, Microsoft’s current support guidance says typical feature updates need 6 GB–11 GB or more of free space, while typical quality updates need 2 GB–3 GB or more. These are guidance ranges, not guarantees: requirements vary with the update path, optional features, installed languages, and other update content. Check the exact prompt from Windows for your device.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
If Windows prompts you to use external storage for an update, follow its supported process and back up important files first. Microsoft’s guidance on freeing space for Windows updates explains the options. After cleanup or moving files, retry the update or task that ran out of room and follow any new space requirement it reports.

Prices can make an upgrade less appealing, but the available market estimate is not a quote for a consumer drive in your country. In a March 2026 executive summary hosted by Hammerspace, Omdia says SSDs are estimated to cost almost 13 times as much as HDDs per gigabyte through 2026, more than double the ratio in 2023. The report describes an industry-wide SSD-to-HDD price-per-gigabyte comparison amid supply constraints and demand for fast storage; it does not establish current retail prices for a particular capacity, brand, or region. See the Omdia executive summary.

That estimate can inform the trade-off between an SSD and an HDD for storage, but it cannot tell you whether a specific drive is a good buy. Compare actual compatible products and costs for your location only after deciding how much space you need and whether files must be available offline.
Choose between cleanup, external storage, and an internal upgrade
| Option | Best fit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Delete replaceable files or unused apps | You need a small amount of space and can identify items you no longer need. | Confirm files are backed up or replaceable; empty Trash or Recycle Bin to reclaim the space. |
| Move files to external or cloud storage | You want to keep archives or large media but do not need all of them on the internal drive. | Check ports, file-system compatibility, internet access for cloud files, account limits, and backup coverage. |
| Replace or upgrade the internal SSD | You need more always-available local capacity and the computer supports an internal replacement or upgrade. | Verify device-specific compatibility and upgradeability before buying; this is not possible on every computer. |
Start with cleanup if the space is occupied by replaceable content. If you need to retain large files, external or cloud storage may solve the immediate capacity problem without changing the computer. An internal SSD upgrade is the more direct path when you need substantially more local space, but first confirm the device supports it and compare the cost with the storage you will actually use. Avoid paid PC-cleaning software as a first step: Microsoft’s built-in storage tools provide the cleanup route described here.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If you are using Windows 10, keep that support status in mind when planning what to do next; freeing storage does not change it.
