Open the lock’s live view, stand where a visitor would approach, and correct the framing before moving hardware. Look for door trim, walls, overhangs, decorations, glare and darkness; then verify the same area in recorded video. If the integrated camera is fixed and cannot cover the approach, use a model-approved angled mount or add a separate outdoor camera rather than forcing an incompatible accessory.
Start by checking what the camera actually sees
A camera can appear correctly installed while still missing the visitor’s face, the walking path or the place where packages are left. Use the app’s live view during daylight and again after dark. Stand at the outer edge of the approach, near the door and at the normal package-drop position. Move slowly through the areas you expect to monitor and note exactly where the image stops being useful.

Use both live and recorded video
Live view reveals the current framing, but recorded clips show whether motion detection and exposure work when someone actually approaches. Ask another person to walk toward the entrance while you watch the feed, then review the saved clip. An area hidden by a wall, trim or another obstruction cannot generate a useful visual alert; manufacturer guidance also warns that blocked areas may not produce notifications.

Separate a framing problem from an alert problem
If the visitor appears in the live image but no alert arrives, the issue may be motion zones, sensitivity, activity-type settings or connectivity rather than camera angle. If the visitor never appears, solve the physical view first. Do not tune detection settings to compensate for a doorway that the lens cannot see.

Map the useful scene
Decide what “good coverage” means for your entrance. Mark the approach path, the visitor’s face area and the package location. A wide scene that shows only a person’s shoulder may be less useful than a narrower frame that captures the face and hands. Also check whether the camera sees the door handle, stairs or a side gate that matters to you.
Find and remove physical obstructions
Inspect the camera from the same direction as the lens. Doorframes, brick returns, porch posts, roof overhangs, decorative trim and nearby fixtures can occupy a large portion of a wide-angle image. The lock body or its mounting plate can also hide the lower corner. Clean the lens and remove temporary items such as seasonal decorations before changing the mount.
Check the nearest wall
A wall close to the lens causes two different problems. In daytime it blocks part of the scene. At night it can reflect infrared illumination back into the camera, producing a bright patch, haze or a blurred foreground. If the live image shows a large wall edge, changing the viewing direction by only a few degrees may improve both coverage and night clarity.
Test the door in every normal position
Open and close the door while watching the feed. A door leaf, screen door or security grille may swing across the lens. Confirm that the view remains clear when the door is open, when a visitor stands on the threshold and when a parcel is placed on the ground. If the camera is mounted on a moving door, verify that vibration or a changed door angle does not shift the frame.
Adjust the camera only with supported controls
Use in-app angle or field-of-view controls first
Some smart-lock cameras provide a digital crop, tilt setting or field-of-view option in their app. Change one setting at a time, save it, and check the live feed from the approach position. Then review a recorded clip to make sure the adjustment did not remove the lower doorway or make motion detection unreliable. Digital cropping cannot reveal an area hidden behind a wall; it only changes which part of the sensor image is displayed.
Use a wedge or corner mount only for the exact model
If the camera itself can be repositioned, a compatible wedge may turn it away from a nearby wall. Compatibility is not interchangeable between doorbells and smart-lock cameras, even when the products look similar. The accessory must be listed for the exact model and mounting system, and the manufacturer’s instructions should specify the permitted angle.
| Example accessory guidance | Published angle | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| TP-Link Tapo D130 wedge | 5° vertical or 15° horizontal | Model-specific angle options; these figures do not establish fit for another camera. |
| Blink Video Doorbell wedge | 5° vertical | A small vertical correction can change the view of steps or packages. |
| Blink Video Doorbell corner mount | 25° horizontal | A corner adapter can redirect a camera away from a wall, but only on the listed doorbell. |
Do not drill new holes, loosen a hardwired unit or add a third-party bracket until you have confirmed the model’s installation requirements. An incorrectly seated mount can leave gaps, expose wiring or let water reach the electronics.

Recheck the complete frame after every adjustment
After changing an angle, stand at the farthest point you want covered, then at the closest point. Make sure the top of the frame still includes a person’s face and the bottom includes the package area. Check both sides of the approach; a horizontal correction that clears one wall can remove a visitor arriving from the opposite direction.
Use height guidance as a reference, not a universal rule
Camera height affects perspective, package visibility and the amount of sky or floor in the frame. Manufacturer recommendations differ by product family, so treat them as starting points rather than a standard for every smart lock.
| Manufacturer guidance | Stated height | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Nest | 4 ft (1.2 m) | Undated guidance for its doorbell camera, intended to help show people and packages. |
| Arlo | About 48 in (120 cm) | Undated guidance for the doorbell models covered by its placement page. |
If your lock’s integrated camera is above or below those references, do not relocate it solely to match them. First follow the lock maker’s instructions and evaluate the actual image. A lower camera may show packages better but can be easier to cover or damage; a higher one may improve tamper resistance while looking over a short visitor.
Correct light, glare and night reflections
Fix backlighting
A bright window, open sky or porch light behind an approaching person can leave the face in shadow. During the day, compare the image when the visitor faces the door with the image when the visitor faces away. At night, a lamp aimed toward the camera can create flare and reduce detail. If possible, redirect the fixture, shade it, or aim the camera so the strongest light is not entering the lens.
Check infrared behavior after dark
Many cameras use infrared illumination at night. A nearby pale wall, doorframe or glossy surface can reflect that light and wash out the scene. Watch a nighttime recording for a bright crescent, foggy patch or loss of detail beside the wall. A small change in horizontal direction, a supported wedge or moving a reflective object may solve the problem; increasing brightness alone will not remove a reflection.
Compare different weather and times
Wet surfaces, snow, fog and low winter sun can change contrast. Test the camera in the conditions in which you rely on it most. If the face is clear at noon but unreadable at dusk, treat that as an exposure or lighting issue rather than a field-of-view issue.
Check Wi-Fi and power at the final location
A perfectly framed camera is still ineffective if clips fail to upload. Test Wi-Fi from the installed position, with the door closed and any exterior wall between the camera and router. Watch for delayed live video, frozen frames, repeated reconnects or missing recordings. If the camera is battery powered, verify that cold weather, frequent live views or infrared use are not exhausting the battery.

Please check all included components and follow the installation guide before powering on the lock.
When relocating a powered or hardwired unit, follow the manufacturer’s wiring, sealing and secure-mount instructions. Turn off power before handling fixed wiring where the installation requires it, and use weather-rated fittings outdoors. Do not extend a cable or move a transformer unless the product documentation permits that arrangement.
Choose the least disruptive fix that meets your coverage goal
| Option | Best when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| In-app angle or field-of-view setting | The sensor already sees the entrance and only the crop is wrong. | Cannot reveal areas physically blocked by a wall or trim. |
| Manufacturer-approved wedge | A small horizontal or vertical correction would clear an obstruction. | Must match the exact model; installation may require removing the device. |
| Repositioned original mount | The lock maker permits a different mounting location and wiring remains safe. | Can affect tamper resistance, weather sealing and door operation. |
| Separate outdoor camera | The integrated camera is fixed and the approach remains outside its useful frame. | Requires another device, power plan, Wi-Fi test and possibly a separate app or alert system. |
Compare each option on compatibility, coverage of the approach and package area, daytime and nighttime lighting, Wi-Fi, power, privacy and installation effort. The cheapest physical change is not a good fix if it removes the face from the frame or creates unreliable alerts.
When a separate outdoor camera is the right answer
If the lock camera cannot be redirected and the entrance remains outside its useful view, an outdoor security camera can cover the missing area. Google’s camera guidance recommends an outdoor camera when the objective is recording an outdoor space. That recommendation does not prove that a particular camera integrates with your lock, shares its alerts or appears in the same app.
Verify the supplemental camera before mounting
- Confirm the camera is rated for the location’s weather exposure and temperature.
- Check Wi-Fi strength at the proposed mounting point, not just inside the house.
- Identify a safe, continuous power source or understand the battery and charging routine.
- Confirm whether the camera supports the notifications, recording retention and app workflow you want.
- Frame the approach, face area and package location without unnecessarily recording neighboring property.
Use the supplemental camera to fill a defined blind spot rather than duplicating the lock camera’s entire view. During setup, trigger both devices with the same approach and check that timestamps, clips and alerts are understandable.
Protect privacy and install safely
A wider view can capture sidewalks, neighboring doors or windows that you do not need. Aim downward or toward your own property where possible, and enable privacy-zone controls if the camera provides them. Ring’s placement guidance advises considering local recording rules and using privacy zones; legal requirements vary by location, so check the rules that apply to your home before recording shared or neighboring areas.
Secure every mount against vibration and tampering. Keep fasteners tight, preserve the manufacturer’s weather seal and avoid blocking the lock’s keypad, fingerprint reader or emergency keyway. Do not place a bracket where it interferes with the door swing or creates a sharp edge in the entry path.
A repeatable troubleshooting procedure
- Document the baseline: Save a daytime live-view screenshot and a nighttime clip showing the current problem.
- Walk the scene: Have someone approach from each normal direction, pause at the threshold and place a package where deliveries usually go.
- Identify the cause: Label the problem as obstruction, angle, lighting, infrared reflection, connectivity or alert configuration.
- Apply the smallest supported change: Use an app setting first, then a model-approved mount or permitted repositioning.
- Test both conditions: Repeat the walk in daylight and darkness, including the door open and closed.
- Review recordings: Confirm that faces, hands and packages remain visible in saved footage, not just the live preview.
- Validate alerts and network: Check that clips upload promptly and that motion alerts correspond to the visible approach.
- Escalate coverage: If the fixed camera still misses the entrance, install a compatible supplemental outdoor camera and configure privacy zones.
Symptoms and targeted fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Only half the doorway appears | Nearby wall, trim or an overly side-mounted camera | View from the approach and test a supported horizontal wedge. |
| Faces are dark in daytime | Bright background behind visitors | Change the camera direction or reduce light entering the lens. |
| Night image has a white haze beside the door | Infrared reflection from a close wall or pale surface | Adjust direction and inspect the night clip after each change. |
| Packages are missing from clips | Camera too high, tilted upward or digitally cropped | Include the drop area in the frame and verify a real delivery-height test. |
| Live view works but recordings are absent | Upload, storage or Wi-Fi problem | Test connectivity at the mount and review recording settings. |
| Alerts stop near one edge of the scene | That approach is blocked or outside the configured detection area | Compare the motion zone with the physical view; do not rely on an unseen area. |
What to identify before seeking model-specific instructions
Exact steps depend on the lock maker, camera model, mounting surface, power type and app version. Record the model name, hardware revision if shown, current mount orientation, whether the unit is battery or hardwired, and a description of the blind spot. With those details, you can check whether the manufacturer supports a tilt setting, a particular wedge, a corner adapter, privacy zones or a relocation procedure. Without them, no universal bracket or app path can be assumed to fit.
