Do not try to defeat the block. First ask your teacher whether AI is allowed for the specific assignment, then ask the school’s IT lead or data-protection contact whether the restriction is a technical setting or a policy decision. Explain the learning task you were trying to complete and request an approved tool, a non-AI method, or an accessibility accommodation that provides the same support.
Until you have a clear answer, keep personal and confidential information out of unapproved services. If an approved tool is permitted, follow its age and safeguarding rules, verify every important output, and disclose or cite its use in the way your teacher requires.

Start with a permission check, not a workaround
A blocked page does not tell you whether the school has prohibited the underlying activity, restricted one vendor, or misconfigured a filter. The distinction matters: a technical block can sometimes be resolved by an administrator, while a policy restriction may apply to the assignment even when you use a personal device or network.
- Save the exact message. Note the date, device, network, and tool address. A screenshot or copied error helps IT determine whether the block is deliberate and what category triggered it.
- Ask the teacher who set the work. Ask what kinds of AI use are allowed for this assignment, whether an exception exists, and how any permitted use must be acknowledged.
- Contact the school’s IT lead or data-protection contact. Ask whether the restriction is technical or policy-based, which tools are approved, and what data-handling rules apply.
- Describe the function you need. Say “I need practice questions,” “I need help organizing an outline,” “I need translation,” or “I need text-to-speech,” rather than insisting on one particular service.
- Get the answer in writing when possible. Keep the teacher’s message or approved-tool list with your assignment notes so you can show what permission covered.
This process follows the approach in UK Department for Education guidance: schools should check approval and personal-data practices and consult an IT lead or data-protection officer. Chicago Public Schools’ student guidance likewise tells students to obtain teacher permission before using generative AI for academic work.

Work out what the block actually means
Use the symptoms below to frame a precise question. Do not infer permission from the fact that a site loads elsewhere.

A personal phone, home Wi-Fi connection, alternate account or browser extension does not automatically make use permitted. Assignment rules, safeguarding requirements and data-protection obligations can follow the activity outside the school network.
Ask for the same learning support in another form
Schools are more likely to approve a solution when you identify the outcome rather than argue for a brand. Prepare a one-sentence description of the barrier, the task, and the result you need.
Practice and feedback
For practice questions, request teacher-created questions, a school learning platform, a textbook question bank or a supervised approved tool. For feedback, ask whether a rubric, peer-review process or scheduled teacher conference can replace automated comments. If AI is allowed only for brainstorming, do not use it to generate a finished submission.
Organization and planning
Ask for an outline template, graphic organizer, library research guide or a planning conference. You can produce an initial outline yourself and have a teacher check whether it meets the assignment criteria.

Translation and language access
Ask whether the school provides a translation service, bilingual staff support or approved accessibility software. Confirm whether translating your own draft is allowed and whether the final submission must identify that assistance.
Reading, writing and other access needs
If the blocked tool was helping with a disability or another access barrier, state that clearly. Ask the school’s special-education, accessibility or student-support contact about a reasonable adjustment that provides equivalent access. Victoria’s education policy calls for accessible and inclusive implementation, including reasonable adjustments; Pennsylvania guidance similarly recommends checking that learners with disabilities can access an AI tool. An accommodation request is about access to the curriculum, not a request to bypass academic standards.

Why bypassing the control can create a bigger problem
Using a personal connection or an unapproved account can expose you to consequences unrelated to the quality of your work. A school may treat the use as an assignment violation, an acceptable-use breach or a safeguarding incident. The service may also retain prompts, uploaded files or account details outside the school’s controls.
UK education guidance recommends safeguards such as close supervision, safety features, filtering and monitoring when pupils use AI. Victoria says some tools are blocked on department networks for information-security, privacy and child-safety reasons. Those controls are not evidence that every AI use is forbidden, but they are a reason to obtain an explicit answer before proceeding.
- Do not upload another student’s name, contact details, school records, medical information, identifiable image or confidential work.
- Do not paste examination questions, unpublished school materials or private messages into an unapproved service.
- Do not create a second account to evade an age gate or school sign-in requirement.
- Do not assume that deleting a chat removes copies retained in logs, backups or vendor systems.
How to evaluate an approved alternative
When a teacher or administrator suggests another service, compare it against the actual need. Approval for one subject or age group may not extend to another.

If any answer is unknown, pause and ask the IT lead or data-protection contact. “It is free” or “other students use it” is not an approval test.
Protect privacy when a tool is permitted
Use the minimum information needed to complete the task. Replace names with neutral labels, remove identifying details from examples, and describe a scenario without uploading the original record. Ask whether the school provides a managed account with tighter controls. If the answer is no, use a non-AI method rather than submitting sensitive material to a consumer service.
Age restrictions are separate from school permission. UK Department for Education guidance states: “Some AI (artificial intelligence) tools have age restrictions. You must review these before allowing pupils to access and use the technology.” A teacher’s permission cannot override a service’s age rule or the school’s safeguarding obligations.
Verify the output and disclose your use
Approval does not make an AI answer accurate. Treat output as a draft that requires checking.
- Identify each factual claim, quotation, calculation and citation in the output.
- Check it against your textbook, class notes, library sources or another authoritative source.
- Remove invented references, unsupported claims and wording you cannot explain.
- Keep your prompts, drafts and source notes if the teacher asks how the work was produced.
- Use the teacher’s required acknowledgment or citation format.
Chicago Public Schools guidance requires students to identify and cite AI-generated content and specify how it was used. UK guidance recommends acknowledging or referencing AI use and checking accuracy. Your class may impose stricter rules, including a complete ban for a particular assessment; follow the assignment-specific instruction.

Policies differ by place, age and school year
There is no universal rule that every school follows. The following examples show why a policy from another district cannot be treated as permission in yours.

Use a short, constructive request
A specific message gives staff enough information to answer without guessing. Adapt this wording:
“I am working on [the assignment] and used the blocked tool for [the function, such as practice questions or translation]. Could you tell me whether that function is allowed for this assignment? If not, which approved tool or non-AI method should I use? I also need [accessibility support, if applicable]. I will avoid personal information, verify the result and record any permitted AI use as required.”
Send the request to the teacher first. If the answer is unclear, forward it to the IT lead, data-protection officer or student-support contact with the exact block message and the assignment deadline.

The teacher says no AI for this assignment
Ask which non-AI resource meets the same learning objective and proceed with that method. Do not continue using the blocked service in secret; the restriction is part of the assessment conditions.

No one responds before the deadline
Submit work produced with an allowed method, and note briefly that you requested clarification if your teacher’s process permits such notes. Ask for an extension when the blocked tool was an approved accommodation or when the technical block prevented access to a required school resource.
You believe the block prevents equal access
Describe the specific access barrier and the adjustment needed, then contact the school’s accessibility or special-education process. Ask for an equivalent approved method rather than naming a particular AI service as the only solution.
The block appears to be an error
Provide IT with the device, network, time and error message. Do not attempt to alter filtering settings, install bypass software or use another person’s credentials while the issue is investigated.

- Permission unclear: stop and ask the teacher.
- Tool unapproved or data handling unknown: use a non-AI alternative until IT or the data-protection contact confirms approval.
- Access barrier involved: request an accessibility accommodation and an equivalent approved tool or method.
- Permission granted: follow age, safeguarding, privacy, verification and disclosure requirements exactly.
The goal is not to regain access to one blocked site. It is to complete the learning task in a way your school has authorized, that protects your information and that you can explain and defend.
