If your phone has poor signal or dropped calls in Canada, start by checking the location and your carrier’s outage status before buying an accessory or replacing the phone. Test the same call indoors and outdoors, try a second location, restart the phone, and note whether the problem affects calls, data, or both. Weak indoor reception may improve with Wi‑Fi Calling, while failures in several locations may point to an outage, SIM or device fault, network compatibility problem, or a coverage limitation.

These steps answer common questions such as “Why does my phone have poor signal?”, “Why do my calls keep dropping?”, “How do I fix dropped calls on my phone in Canada?”, and “Will Wi‑Fi Calling help when I have no cell signal?”

Start with a location and outage check

A signal problem is easier to diagnose when you describe its pattern. Before changing settings, establish where and when calls fail.

Map the pattern

  • One room or building: Concrete, metal, energy-efficient windows and several walls can weaken reception. A call that works outside but fails in a basement or interior room usually indicates an indoor obstruction rather than a dead phone.
  • Several nearby locations: Check the carrier’s coverage map at each address and along the route where calls fail. Maps show expected service, not guaranteed reception in every room or continuous call quality.
  • Many places, including outdoors: Suspect an outage, SIM or eSIM problem, handset fault, account issue, or compatibility gap. Test before spending money.
  • Only while travelling: Record whether the phone is moving between towers or displays a different network label. A transition between network areas can interrupt a call.

Make one test call outside, then repeat it indoors and at a second location. If another phone on the same carrier works at the same time and place, your handset, SIM or settings become more likely causes.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Check live outage information

Look at your carrier’s outage page or support account before resetting the phone. An outage can produce sudden weak service, failed calls and slow data in an otherwise reliable area. Save the outage time and the address where you noticed it.

Rogers notes that a call can drop when a phone enters an Extended Coverage area. If the display changes to EXT, its guidance is to call back after the indicator appears. Record that indicator, whether you were moving, and the exact time so support can investigate the local network path.

Use low-risk phone checks first

  1. Restart the phone. A restart makes the handset register with the network again and clears temporary radio or software states. After it starts, wait for the normal network name or signal indicator before testing.
  2. Check Airplane Mode. Turn it on for about 10 seconds, turn it off, and wait for cellular service to return. Do not leave it enabled while testing a call.
  3. Test Wi‑Fi Calling as a variable. If calls fail only when Wi‑Fi Calling is enabled, switch Wi‑Fi off and make a cellular test call. If cellular calling works, re-enable Wi‑Fi Calling only after confirming that your Wi‑Fi connection is stable.
  4. Install pending system or carrier updates. Menu names vary by iPhone, Android version and manufacturer, so use the phone maker’s instructions or your carrier’s support page for the exact path.
  5. Try another network option only as a test. Automatic network selection is normally appropriate. A carrier representative can tell you which options are supported in your area; do not force an obsolete network mode as a permanent fix.

A restart is reversible. A network-settings reset is not as convenient: Rogers’ troubleshooting guidance warns that it deletes saved Wi‑Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings. You will need to reconnect to Wi‑Fi and pair accessories again. Use it only after the quick tests and make sure you know your Wi‑Fi passwords.

Why calls drop even when bars are visible

The number of bars is not a complete measure of call reliability. A phone may show a usable signal while the network is congested, while the handset is changing coverage areas, or when the phone and network cannot complete a compatible voice connection.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Indoor obstruction

Building materials can absorb or reflect radio signals. Move near a window or outside and compare a short call. If the outdoor test succeeds repeatedly, Wi‑Fi Calling or a different location inside the building is more practical than replacing the phone.

Coverage edge or network handoff

At the edge of a carrier’s service area, a phone may move between the carrier’s network and an extended or partner area. A handoff while driving or on a train can interrupt a call even though the phone reconnects moments later. Note the displayed network label and direction of travel.

Temporary outage or congestion

An outage can affect calls, texts, data, or only one technology. Ask whether other customers nearby have the same symptom and check the carrier’s live status. Congestion may be time-specific, so include the time of day in your report.

SIM, eSIM or handset fault

A damaged SIM, an incorrectly provisioned eSIM, loose SIM contact, or a failing radio can mimic poor coverage. A SIM test in another compatible phone can help separate service from handset problems, but obtain carrier instructions before moving an eSIM or changing account settings.

Will Wi‑Fi Calling help when you have no cell signal?

Wi‑Fi Calling can provide a calling route when cellular reception is weak or unavailable, provided the carrier, plan and exact phone model support it. It is especially useful when calls work outdoors but not inside a particular building.

Check support before relying on it

  • Confirm that Wi‑Fi Calling is available for your carrier, plan and phone model.
  • Enable it in the phone’s cellular or phone settings; the label and location differ by software version.
  • Connect to a reliable Wi‑Fi network and look for the carrier’s Wi‑Fi Calling indicator.
  • Make a test call from the rooms where you normally have trouble.

Wi‑Fi Calling still depends on the internet connection. A weak, overloaded or changing Wi‑Fi network can interrupt a call and require you to redial. Moving between Wi‑Fi and cellular coverage can also cause a brief break, so do not assume it will preserve every call during a network change.

Understand emergency calling over Wi‑Fi

Emergency handling is carrier-specific. Bell explains that when the mobile network is unavailable, an emergency call over Wi‑Fi is sent to a call centre that asks where you are before forwarding the call to the appropriate 9‑1‑1 response centre. Be ready to state your exact location and follow the operator’s instructions. Do not assume every carrier uses the same process or that Wi‑Fi Calling works if the Wi‑Fi network itself has failed.

Reset network settings only when the evidence supports it

If restarting and outage checks do not help, a network-settings reset can clear corrupted cellular, Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth configuration. It does not normally erase photos or apps, but it removes saved Wi‑Fi passwords, VPN details and Bluetooth pairings. Write down credentials and expect to reconnect devices afterward.

  • [Quality Service] If you find any damage or other issues with the product upon receipt, please contact us immediately. We will handle it quickly
  1. Back up important information and confirm that you know the passwords for frequently used Wi‑Fi networks.
  2. Open the phone’s reset options and choose the network-settings reset, not a full factory reset. The wording and menu path differ by model.
  3. Let the phone restart, reconnect to Wi‑Fi if needed, and make separate cellular and Wi‑Fi Calling test calls.
  4. If the problem remains in several locations, stop resetting and contact the carrier with your test results.

A factory reset should be a last resort after backing up data and receiving carrier or device-maker guidance. It removes personal content and accounts, and the available evidence does not establish one universally correct factory-reset procedure for every Canadian phone.

Check 3G phase-out and VoLTE compatibility

Some older phones can lose the ability to make or receive calls or texts, including emergency 9‑1‑1 calls, or use data when a provider retires its 3G network. The CRTC identifies missing Voice over LTE (VoLTE) support as one possible reason and advises checking the exact model number in the phone manual and with the carrier before replacing a device.

The CRTC states: “VoLTE, which began to be implemented in Canada in 2015, improves call quality and supports enhanced calling features.” Read the regulator’s current guidance on 3G network phase-out: essential information for cellphone users.

Verify the exact model, not just the phone’s age

  • Find the full model number in Settings, on the original packaging, or on the device label.
  • Ask the carrier whether that exact model and regional variant is approved for VoLTE and emergency calling on its network.
  • Check whether the line, SIM or eSIM is provisioned for VoLTE.
  • Replace the phone only if the carrier confirms incompatibility, a hardware fault, or an unsupported configuration.

Signal bars alone cannot establish compatibility. A newer-looking phone may still be an imported variant that lacks the frequencies or voice features your carrier requires.

Separate the phone, SIM and network with controlled tests

When the problem persists, change one variable at a time and record the result.

Test What it can indicate Precaution
Same SIM in another compatible phone If calls work there, the original handset or its configuration is more likely at fault. Ask the carrier before moving an eSIM; physical SIMs should be handled carefully.
Another known-working SIM in your phone If both services fail, the handset or local radio environment becomes more likely. Do not alter account settings without carrier approval.
Outdoor call at the same address Success outside points toward indoor obstruction or Wi‑Fi Calling as the practical remedy. Use the same carrier and repeat the test to avoid confusing coverage differences.
Call, text and data separately A voice-only failure can indicate VoLTE or provisioning; data-only failure points elsewhere. Record the network indicator and time for each test.

Give the carrier evidence it can act on

Instead of reporting only “bad signal,” provide a short log:

  • Exact address or road segment, plus indoor or outdoor location.
  • Date, time and whether you were stationary or moving.
  • Call, text or data failure, and whether the call dropped or never connected.
  • Displayed network label, including EXT or a Wi‑Fi Calling indicator.
  • Phone make, exact model number, software version and SIM or eSIM type.
  • Whether another phone on the same carrier had the same problem.
  • What you already tried: restart, Wi‑Fi Calling test, network reset and SIM test.

Ask the carrier to check the line, SIM or eSIM provisioning, VoLTE eligibility, local outage reports and the serving site. This information lets support distinguish a local radio issue from a handset or account problem.

Choose the remedy that matches the pattern

Remedy Best fit Dependence Effort or disruption
Restart and outage check Sudden or intermittent failures in any location Current network status and normal phone operation Minutes; no data loss
Move outdoors or near a window One room or building has weak reception A stronger signal outside Immediate, but not a permanent indoor solution
Wi‑Fi Calling Reliable Wi‑Fi and poor indoor cellular service Supported carrier, plan, phone and working Wi‑Fi Simple setup; calls can still drop if Wi‑Fi changes
Network-settings reset Persistent configuration-related symptoms after basic checks Ability to reconnect networks and accessories Deletes saved Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth settings
SIM, eSIM and handset diagnosis Failures across multiple locations Carrier guidance and a compatible test device More time; eSIM changes require care
VoLTE-compatible replacement Carrier confirms the current model is incompatible or faulty Exact model approval and suitable network support Purchase cost; verify before buying

When to stop troubleshooting yourself

Contact the carrier promptly if calls fail outdoors in several locations, emergency calling is affected, the phone repeatedly loses registration, or the issue began after a SIM or eSIM change. Stop experimenting with network modes if the phone cannot make emergency calls. Keep an alternate way to contact emergency services while the problem is unresolved, and tell the carrier that emergency calling is part of the failure.

Do not assume a signal booster, a factory reset or a new plan will create coverage that is absent at your location. First establish whether the limitation is building-related, temporary, device-specific or a genuine coverage gap. That evidence determines whether Wi‑Fi Calling, a SIM or configuration fix, carrier intervention, or a confirmed compatible phone is the appropriate next step.
