First decide whether anyone is in immediate danger. If so, try the local emergency number now. An iPhone showing SOS or SOS only may be able to place an emergency call through another carrier in Australia, Canada, or the United States. If the call will not connect, use another person’s phone, a staffed location, a landline, or local emergency procedures. If there is no immediate danger, move somewhere coverage could improve, reset the phone’s radio connection, check the SIM or eSIM and account, and use trusted Wi-Fi if it is available. A phone cannot transmit a call, message, or location without some usable terrestrial network or internet connection.
What the status message means
“No cellular signal” can describe several different conditions. Read the exact status before choosing a remedy; the distinction determines whether an emergency call, Wi-Fi calling, or ordinary messaging is possible.

| Status | What it indicates | What may still work |
|---|---|---|
| SOS or SOS only (iPhone) | The iPhone is disconnected from its own carrier. In Australia, Canada, and the United States, Apple says it may still place an emergency call through another available carrier. | Emergency calling may work if another terrestrial network is reachable. Ordinary calls and data on your own plan generally will not. |
| No Service or Searching (iPhone) | The phone is not connected to a cellular network. | Wi-Fi-based services can work if a functioning Wi-Fi connection and the required carrier or app support are available. |
| Android no signal or emergency-only indicator | The wording and behavior vary by manufacturer, Android version, carrier, and country. | Possible Wi-Fi calling, internet messaging, or emergency features depend on the device, account, region, and an actual connection. |
Satellite features are a separate radio path. If satellite service is unavailable, blocked by the environment, unsupported in your region, or not offered by the phone, it cannot be used as a fallback. The remaining options must use a terrestrial cellular network, working Wi-Fi, or another person’s communications route.

If there is immediate danger
Try the local emergency number
Call the emergency number used where you are. In the United States, call 911 whenever possible. A wireless phone without an active service plan may still reach 911 if it can connect to a terrestrial network, but the call center may not receive your location and may be unable to call back if the call drops. “No service” does not mean a call will connect when no network is physically reachable.

- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
In the United States, 911.gov says a voice call is preferred. Text-to-911 should be attempted only when calling is not possible, and text service is not available in every community. Do not send an emergency text simply because the phone shows no bars; the message still needs a working network path.
When an iPhone shows SOS
On an iPhone displaying SOS or SOS only, attempt the emergency call. The phone may use another carrier’s network in the supported countries noted by Apple. This is not a promise that the call will connect, and it does not restore normal service for calls, messages, or mobile data.
If the call fails
- Ask anyone nearby to call from their phone, even if their carrier is different.
- Go, if it is safe, to a staffed place such as a hotel desk, shop, transport office, police or fire station, or medical facility and ask for emergency assistance.
- Look for a landline or an emergency call box.
- Tell a helper your exact location, the emergency, the number of people involved, and where you are going next. Do not leave without communicating a destination when doing so would make you harder to find.
Do not rely on an Android Emergency SOS shortcut to transmit your location when there is no data connection. Google notes that Emergency SOS behavior and Emergency Location Service availability depend on the device, Android version, carrier, country, and network.

Safe steps to try when the situation is not immediately dangerous
1. Move where a network may reach the phone
If practical, move outdoors, away from thick walls, underground areas, metal structures, valleys, or other obstructions. A higher or more open position can help only when a compatible terrestrial cell site is within range. Do not enter traffic, climb dangerously, or leave a safe group just to chase a signal.
2. Refresh the radio connection
On an iPhone, turn Airplane Mode on, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. Restart the phone afterward. These actions make the device search again; they cannot create coverage during an outage or in a dead zone.
Android menus differ by manufacturer. Use the system’s Airplane Mode control, leave it on briefly, turn it off, and restart if the phone offers no connection. Do not leave Airplane Mode enabled while expecting cellular calls or messages.

3. Check the SIM, eSIM, and active line
- Confirm the intended cellular line is enabled, especially on a dual-SIM phone.
- For a physical SIM, power down before reseating it and check for damage or contamination.
- For an eSIM, verify that the profile is still present and active; do not delete it while troubleshooting unless the carrier instructs you to do so.
- If you are traveling, check whether roaming is enabled and included for the destination.
4. Separate a phone problem from a carrier problem
Use Wi-Fi or another phone to ask the carrier to confirm that the account is active, the area is covered, there is no outage, and the device or SIM has not been blocked. Ask whether a known tower or regional failure is under way. If the carrier rules out account and network causes, install any available operating-system or carrier-settings update and arrange device service if hardware failure is suspected.
Using Wi-Fi when cellular service is down
Wi-Fi calling
A working Wi-Fi network can carry calls when the carrier and phone support Wi-Fi calling. Some carriers allow it even when the phone has no cellular service, but support, activation, and emergency handling vary. The feature must normally be enabled before an outage, and the carrier may require a registered emergency address. Update that address after moving.
On many Android phones, the setting is under Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → carrier SIM → Wi-Fi calling. Manufacturers may rename or relocate it. If the option is missing, Google says the carrier may not support Wi-Fi calling for that device or account; confirm eligibility with the carrier. iPhone menus and carrier requirements also vary, so verify the feature while you still have service.

Wi-Fi calling is not automatically an emergency guarantee. The Wi-Fi connection must reach the carrier’s service, the feature must be registered correctly, and the emergency operator may receive location based on the address you supplied rather than your current physical position. A public hotspot that requires a sign-in page, blocks voice traffic, or is overloaded may not support the call.
Internet messaging
Messaging applications, email, and web-based services can work over Wi-Fi without cellular bars. They still need a functioning internet connection and an account that is already signed in or otherwise usable. Send your location in plain language, identify a nearby landmark, and ask the recipient to acknowledge the message. An app showing a sent icon is not proof that a person or emergency service has seen it.
Keep emergency communication short and conserve the connection for the most important information. If Wi-Fi stops working, switch to the fallback options rather than repeatedly retrying a message that cannot leave the phone.

Choosing the best available communication path
| Option | Connection required | Availability and limitations | Location considerations | Use first when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emergency call through another carrier | A reachable terrestrial cellular network; an iPhone in SOS may use one in supported countries. | Country, carrier, device, and network dependent. No network means no call. | Location may be missing or inaccurate, particularly for a U.S. 911 call from a phone without active service. | There is immediate danger and the phone offers a call attempt. |
| Wi-Fi calling | Working Wi-Fi plus carrier and device support. | Must be enabled and correctly configured; some carriers permit it without cellular service and others do not. | Emergency routing may use a registered address, not your current position. | Cellular service is absent but trusted Wi-Fi is available. |
| Internet messaging | Working Wi-Fi internet and a usable messaging account or app. | Not every recipient monitors messages continuously; emergency-text support varies by jurisdiction. | You must describe or share your location yourself. | Calling is unavailable and a known person can receive data messages. |
| Another phone, staffed location, or landline | Someone else’s working phone or fixed communication line. | Requires reaching a person or staffed site safely. | Tell the helper exactly where you are and where you will wait. | Your phone cannot connect by any route. |
Conserve battery without blocking the next connection
Lower screen brightness, close apps that are using power, and avoid repeated screen checks. Use Airplane Mode only while you deliberately do not need radio connectivity; leaving it on prevents cellular calls and messages. Turn it off before each planned reconnection or emergency-call attempt.
A portable power bank can extend runtime for offline maps, saved contacts, instructions, and intermittent attempts to reconnect. It cannot create a signal, bypass an outage, or replace a network. Treat it as preparedness equipment rather than a communications device.
Prepare before travel or an outage
- Save important contacts and the destination’s emergency number where they are available offline. Emergency numbers differ by country; learn the local one before departure.
- Ask your carrier whether Wi-Fi calling works with your exact phone and account. Enable it in advance, complete any verification, and confirm the emergency address registered for the service.
- Establish a check-in schedule, a meeting point, and a rule for what to do if messages stop. Share the plan with family or travel companions.
- Carry a printed contact list and, where appropriate, another backup communication method. Paper remains usable when a phone battery or network fails.
- Keep the phone charged. A power bank is optional runtime support, not a signal booster.
- Store key directions, booking details, medical information, and identification offline so a loss of mobile data does not remove them.
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance, published June 23, 2026, recommends checking the active line, SIM or eSIM, coverage, account, updates, carrier settings, and roaming when an iPhone shows SOS, No Service, or Searching. U.S. 911 guidance was last updated March 8, 2023; its advice about voice calls, text-to-911 availability, location, and callbacks applies specifically to the United States. Communications-abroad guidance from the U.S. Department of State was last updated May 8, 2026. Battery-conservation advice from FCC/FEMA dates to September 2011 but remains general preparedness guidance.
