Start by opening your phone’s battery-usage screen, then temporarily undo the one setting you changed and compare usage. The timing is a useful clue, not proof that the setting caused the drain. Check which app or activity is consuming power, review background and display features, restart the phone, and use the manufacturer’s diagnostics or Safe mode if the pattern continues.
First, establish what “drains quickly” means
Before changing more settings, record the pattern. Battery loss while the screen is on points to a different class of causes than loss while the phone is idle. Note when the drain began, whether the phone was recently updated or set up, and whether it feels warmer than usual.

- Onset: Write down the approximate time and the setting you changed immediately beforehand.
- Usage state: Check whether the percentage falls mainly during screen use, overnight standby, calls, navigation, streaming, or another activity.
- Temperature: Unusual warmth while idle suggests that background work, poor signal conditions, or a malfunctioning app may be involved.
- Recent software work: Include an operating-system update, data restore, new phone setup, or large app update in the timeline.
- Network conditions: Ask whether the phone is in a weak-signal area or repeatedly switching between network types.
This information prevents a common mistake: treating a coincidence in timing as a confirmed cause.

The battery screen is the fastest way to find an unusually active app or feature. Open the Battery section in Settings and select the usage or activity view for the period in which the drain occurred. Menu names vary by model and software version, so use the closest equivalent rather than relying on a single cross-platform tap sequence.

Look at the time window that includes the problem, not only the lifetime total. A single app at the top is a lead for investigation, not automatic proof of a defect. Open its details and distinguish foreground activity (while you were using it) from background activity (while it was not on screen).
Be cautious with restrictions on communication, health, navigation, security, or other time-sensitive apps. Limiting background use can delay alerts, location updates, syncing, or wearable data. Change one app at a time so you can tell whether the result improves.
Test the setting you changed
Return to the exact setting that preceded the symptom. If it is safe and practical, restore the previous value for a defined comparison period. Do not change several unrelated options at once; that destroys the evidence you need.

- Write down the current value and the previous value, if you remember it.
- Restore only that one setting.
- Use the phone normally and observe the same kind of activity that revealed the drain.
- Compare battery usage and temperature with the original observation.
- If nothing changes, return the setting to your preferred value and investigate the next item shown by battery usage.
A change that reverses the symptom is a strong practical clue, but it still does not identify the underlying mechanism. The option may have enabled a feature, increased background activity, changed display behavior, or exposed an unrelated software problem.

Review the features that commonly increase power use
Manufacturer guidance consistently points to a small group of settings and activities. Review them as targeted checks rather than disabling everything permanently.
Background activity and refresh
Inspect apps with high background time. On iPhone, review Background App Refresh and notification behavior; on Android, inspect each app’s background-use or battery setting. Keep background access for apps that must synchronize or alert you, and restrict only those that show disproportionate activity.
Location services
Check which apps have location access and whether they can use it continuously. Navigation, fitness, delivery, and safety apps may need ongoing location. For other apps, a less frequent permission can reduce work without removing location from the entire phone.

High brightness consumes power during every minute of screen use. Also inspect notifications that wake the display repeatedly. Reducing unnecessary alerts can address both the notification work and the screen-on time.

Always-on display and similar display features
If your model offers an always-on display, temporarily disable it for the comparison period. Treat this as a diagnostic experiment; the feature may be worthwhile if it is not responsible for the unusual drain.

Restart the phone, then consider update activity
A normal restart is a low-risk way to clear a temporary software process. Android’s official guidance includes restarting when a software glitch may be contributing to battery loss: Android battery guidance. A restart can stop a stuck task, but it cannot tell you which setting or app caused it.

If an operating-system update happened around the same time, some update-related tasks can continue after the phone is usable. Apple says this background work can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance; see Apple’s support explanation. The available guidance does not establish one universal settling period, so do not assume that a particular number of hours guarantees recovery. Continue checking usage data, and escalate if the drain remains severe or the phone stays hot.

Check signal conditions before blaming the setting
A phone working in a weak or unstable cellular signal may use extra power while searching for service or switching network conditions. Samsung lists an unstable network connection as a possible contributor to faster drain in its troubleshooting guidance: Samsung US Support. Compare battery behavior in a location with reliable coverage, without changing several other variables. If the drain occurs only in one building, basement, vehicle, or rural area, the network context is significant.
Use built-in diagnostics and isolate downloaded apps
Google Pixel Battery diagnostics
On supported Pixel phones, open the Battery section and run the available Battery diagnostics. Google states that some steps require Android 14 or later, so an older version may show fewer options. Follow the prompts for battery usage and app background controls, and record any result before changing another variable. The current procedure is documented at Google Pixel Help.
Samsung Safe mode
Samsung recommends Safe mode as an app-isolation test. Safe mode starts the phone with downloaded apps disabled. Use the model-specific instructions in Samsung’s battery-drain troubleshooting page, then observe the same idle or active scenario that produced the drain.

- If the drain largely disappears in Safe mode, Samsung says a downloaded app is likely involved. Remove or update recently installed apps one at a time, beginning with those prominent in battery usage.
- If the drain continues in Safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely to be the cause. Continue with system, network, update, and hardware support steps.
Safe mode is a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent operating mode. Exit it using your model’s normal restart procedure and confirm that the phone returns to regular operation.
What to do when the battery list does not reveal a culprit
If no app or activity is unusually prominent, repeat the test with a clearly defined period: note the starting percentage, the screen-on or idle conditions, the network environment, and the ending percentage. This helps separate a one-time background task from a repeatable drain.
Do not jump directly to a factory reset. A reset erases personal data and may not fix a network, battery-health, or hardware problem. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific support route first, back up your data, and confirm that you know the device’s account credentials before any reset that support directs you to perform.
If the phone becomes very hot, shuts down unexpectedly, swells, smells unusual, or shows physical battery damage, stop charging or using it and seek qualified manufacturer or repair assistance. Software settings cannot safely resolve a physically damaged battery.
A practical decision path
- Document the pattern: idle or active drain, onset, warmth, update history, and signal conditions.
- Read battery usage: identify the top app or activity for the relevant time window.
- Run one setting experiment: temporarily undo the recent change and compare like-for-like use.
- Review related features: background activity, location, brightness, always-on display, and display-waking notifications.
- Restart: then recheck the same usage screen.
- Account for context: update-related background work and weak network coverage can both alter consumption.
- Isolate software: use Pixel diagnostics where available or Samsung Safe mode when applicable.
- Escalate: contact the manufacturer or qualified service if the drain persists, diagnostics indicate a fault, or the device shows unsafe heat or physical damage.
Details to include when asking for model-specific help
General instructions cannot identify a cause without device information. Provide the exact model, operating-system and software version, the setting changed (including its old and new values), the time the change was made, when the drain began, whether the phone is warm, the battery-usage leaders, and whether the symptom occurs during use or idle. Also mention any recent update, setup or restore, new app, and weak-signal location. Those details determine which menus, diagnostics, and recovery steps are actually available.
