Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Treat a failing or degraded-drive alert as an urgent loss-of-redundancy event. Identify the exact disk, bay, pool or RAID volume, and serial number; confirm that an independent backup is usable; stop unnecessary writes; then follow your NAS platform’s offline, replace and rebuild procedure. Install a compatible NAS-rated replacement that meets the platform’s capacity, interface and sector-format requirements. A degraded array may keep serving files, but another disk failure can exceed its fault tolerance and make the pool inaccessible.
First response: stabilize the NAS and identify the failed member
Do not immediately pull a disk because an alert appeared. Transient read errors, a loose carrier, a cable problem or a monitoring glitch can look different from a disk that the array has formally marked failed. Use the NAS management interface and record:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The alert text, timestamp and severity.
- The pool, storage pool, RAID group or volume affected.
- The bay number and disk serial number identified by the system.
- Whether the state is degraded, failed, offline, read-only or completely unavailable.
- Any second disk showing warnings, read errors or rising health counters.
Save screenshots or export the event log before changing hardware. If the interface identifies a specific member, compare the displayed serial number with the label on the physical drive. Pulling the wrong disk can turn a recoverable degraded array into a multi-disk failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Pause backup jobs, media indexing, virtual machines, downloads and other nonessential workloads that generate writes.
- Keep the NAS powered and connected unless it is overheating, repeatedly shutting down or creating a clear electrical hazard.
- Verify that a separate backup exists and that at least a sample of important files can be opened from it.
- Check the array’s documented fault tolerance before removing anything.
Redundancy is a temporary safety margin, not a backup. The longer a failed member remains unreplaced, the longer the array operates with less protection.

What “degraded” means for your data
A degraded RAID group has lost at least one expected member but is still presenting data because the RAID level can reconstruct the missing information. Reads and writes may continue, often with reduced performance. The important change is that the array has less fault tolerance than designed: another disk failure, an unrecoverable read error during reconstruction or a controller problem may exceed what the layout can survive.
| Array condition | What it means | Safe next decision |
|---|---|---|
| Healthy or online | All expected members are present and the platform reports normal protection. | Maintain backups and investigate the warning, but do not replace a disk solely on an unconfirmed alert. |
| Degraded but accessible | One or more members are missing or failed while the RAID level is still within its tolerance. | Minimize writes, confirm a backup and replace the identified member promptly. |
| Rebuilding or resilvering | The platform is reconstructing redundancy onto a replacement or spare. | Monitor progress and health; avoid disruptive maintenance until it completes. |
| Offline, inaccessible or read-only | The array cannot provide normal read/write service, or the platform has stopped it to protect consistency. | Stop repeated replacement attempts and escalate to vendor support or a professional recovery service. |
| Stripe or RAID0 failure | There is no redundant copy in the layout; one failed disk loses the pool’s data. | Recreate the pool and restore from backups rather than attempting a normal rebuild. |
Do not infer tolerance from the number of bays. The same enclosure can contain different pools with different RAID levels. Read the pool’s actual layout and failed-member count in the storage manager.
Confirm an independent backup before hardware work
A second copy must be separate from the affected pool. A snapshot, recycle-bin folder or another volume in the same NAS may disappear with the pool and does not satisfy this check. Prefer a backup on another device or location.

- Check that the backup completed before the disk began failing and includes recently changed data.
- Make sure encryption keys, application databases and NAS configuration exports are available where needed.
- Record the backup location and available free space in case a full restore becomes necessary.
If the only copy is on the degraded NAS, avoid experiments such as repeatedly removing and reinserting disks, forcing a wipe or creating a new pool. Capture logs and seek platform support before taking an action that can overwrite metadata.
Choose a replacement drive that the NAS can actually use
Buy a NAS-rated replacement hard drive, not merely a disk with the same advertised terabytes. Eligibility is determined by the NAS model, controller, RAID implementation and drive format.
| Check | Why it matters | How to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | The replacement must meet the platform’s minimum size. Usable capacity can be limited by the smallest member. | Read the storage manager’s requirement and compare the drive’s actual reported capacity, not only its retail label. TrueNAS requires a replacement of the same or greater capacity than the failed disk. |
| Interface | SATA, SAS and other interfaces are not interchangeable in every enclosure. | Check the NAS model manual, backplane specification and vendor compatibility list. |
| Sector format | Logical or physical sector formats can affect whether a disk is accepted or performs correctly. | Confirm the format supported by the NAS and the existing array members. |
| Physical fit | A 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch mechanism, carrier holes and connector position must match the bay. | Verify the bay size and carrier requirements before ordering. |
| Drive class | NAS-rated models are designed for multi-drive vibration, sustained workloads and 24/7 operation. | Use the NAS vendor’s supported-drive list where available and review the drive’s workload and endurance rating. |
| Firmware and compatibility | Some platforms reject or warn about unsupported models even when the interface fits. | Search the exact NAS model and firmware version in the compatibility documentation. |
| Warranty, noise and power | These affect long-term operating cost and suitability for a home or office. | Compare warranty length, acoustic rating and power profile after compatibility is established. |
Do not substitute a smaller disk because its nominal capacity appears close. A replacement that is even slightly below the failed member’s usable size may be rejected. Conversely, a larger disk may be accepted but leave unused capacity until every member meets the larger size, depending on the platform.

Replace the disk and start the rebuild
The exact labels differ, but the safe sequence is consistent: identify, offline, replace, rebuild and verify.
TrueNAS
- In the storage or pool-management view, select the failed member and choose the option to take it offline. Confirm that the serial number and slot match the physical disk.
- Power down or follow the enclosure’s hot-swap instructions, then remove the failed disk and install the compatible replacement.
- Return to the pool’s disk actions, select the new disk and choose Replace. TrueNAS automatically starts a pool resilver after the replacement is accepted.
- Watch the resilver state and inspect alerts for read errors or a second disk entering a fault state.
TrueNAS documentation says, “To prevent further redundancy loss or eventual data loss, always replace a failed disk as soon as possible!” Its replacement guidance, last modified March 2, 2026, also requires the new disk to be the same or greater capacity than the failed disk. Do not select a force option casually: TrueNAS warns that forcing the operation destroys data on the selected replacement disk.
QNAP
- Open the storage manager and confirm the RAID type, failed-disk count and affected bay.
- Verify that the number of failed disks remains within that RAID type’s recovery tolerance.
- Replace the identified disk with a compatible model of sufficient capacity.
- If the rebuild does not begin automatically, assign the new member as a spare or use the platform’s documented rebuild action.
- Keep the storage manager open to confirm that reconstruction progresses rather than remaining paused or failed.
QNAP documents recovery only while the failed-disk count remains within the RAID type’s tolerance. If the process does not recover the data, its support guidance is to replace faulty drives and contact QNAP support rather than repeatedly forcing operations.

Synology
- Open the storage-management interface and identify the storage pool and drive serial number shown as problematic.
- Use the platform’s Replace Drive feature when it is offered. This workflow is designed to prevent storage-pool degradation when drive issues are detected.
- Install the selected replacement only after confirming its bay, capacity and compatibility.
- Follow the on-screen rebuild or repair state until the pool reports normal protection.
If your firmware presents different labels, use the equivalent documented action rather than guessing. A replacement wizard may erase the selected disk as part of preparing it for the pool.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Manage the rebuild or resilver safely
Reconstruction reads surviving members and writes a complete set of redundancy information to the replacement. It can take substantial time, especially on large disks or a busy array. The progress percentage may advance unevenly; a slow phase is not automatically a failure.
- Keep the NAS on reliable power. An unexpected shutdown during reconstruction can add another recovery problem.
- Reduce nonessential file transfers, indexing, virtual-machine activity and backup jobs until redundancy returns.
- Do not remove a second disk because it reports a warning unless the platform identifies it as failed and the recovery plan accounts for it.
- Check the event log periodically for uncorrectable sectors, I/O errors, temperature warnings or a second member dropping offline.
- Do not initialize, format or wipe any disk that might contain the only copy of needed data.
A rebuild that completes with a healthy or online state restores the array’s designed protection; it does not prove that every file is intact or that another disk is healthy. Record the completion time and any warnings.

When to stop and escalate
Stop making changes and contact the NAS vendor or a professional recovery provider if any of these conditions occurs:
- The pool becomes offline, inaccessible or read-only.
- The NAS cannot identify an eligible replacement despite matching the documented requirements.
- The rebuild repeatedly fails, stops at the same point or reports unrecoverable read errors.
- Another member begins failing while the first rebuild is still incomplete.
- You cannot confirm an independent backup and the data is business-critical or irreplaceable.
Provide support with the NAS model and firmware, pool or RAID layout, disk models and serial numbers, alert logs, timeline and every action already taken. Do not hide a failed attempt; the sequence matters when determining whether metadata or sectors may have been altered.
RAID0 and other no-redundancy cases
RAID0, also called a stripe, spreads each file across multiple disks without parity or mirroring. If any member fails, the pool cannot reconstruct missing blocks. TrueNAS states: “When a disk fails in a Stripe (RAID0) pool, you must recreate the entire pool and restore all data backups.” Do not expect a replacement disk to rebuild a RAID0 pool.
If there is no usable backup, power down only when necessary to protect the hardware, preserve the disk set in its current order, and seek professional recovery advice. Creating a new pool, accepting an initialization prompt or writing recovered files back onto the original members can reduce the chance of recovery.
Verify the pool after it returns healthy
- Confirm that the management interface reports healthy, online or fully protected rather than merely “rebuilding complete.”
- Review new alerts and the replacement disk’s health information.
- Run the platform’s consistency check or scrub when the vendor recommends it and the pool is stable.
- Open files from several shares and applications, including recently changed data.
- Resume normal workloads gradually, then run and verify a fresh backup.
- Update the asset record with the failed disk’s serial number, replacement model, date and rebuild result.
A scrub or consistency operation can reveal latent read problems that were not visible during ordinary use. If it reports errors, preserve the logs and investigate before treating the incident as closed.
Quick Recap
Prevent the next degraded-drive emergency
- Maintain at least one independent, tested backup and periodically perform a restore drill.
- Enable email, push or dashboard alerts for disk health, temperature, pool degradation and failed scrubs.
- Keep a written map of bays, serial numbers, pool membership and RAID level.
- Keep replacement capacity and interface requirements documented so the correct disk can be obtained quickly.
- Use a reliable power source and safe shutdown procedure to reduce corruption from outages.
- Review whether the current RAID level matches the value and restore time of the data; RAID improves availability but is not a backup.
