A record high is a reason to check your investment plan, not an automatic sell signal. Compare your current holdings with the allocation you chose for your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance. If gains have pushed one asset category materially above its target, a planned rebalance may restore the risk level you intended. If your goals or circumstances have changed, that—not the headline market level—may justify changing the allocation.
Before selling, account for taxes, transaction fees and the type of account involved. The right response can be as simple as directing new contributions toward an underweight asset, or as deliberate as selling part of an overweight holding. Moving everything to cash because prices are high is an all-or-nothing market call, and a record alone does not establish that it is warranted.

What a record high can—and cannot—tell you
A portfolio reaching a new high tells you that its current market value is greater than at any earlier point in the period being measured. It does not tell you whether the portfolio now carries more risk than you intended, whether prices are about to fall, or whether selling would improve your long-term result.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing cautions that investors generally should not change their asset allocation simply because one asset class has recently performed well. The useful question is not “Is the market high?” but “Does my portfolio still match the plan I can follow?”

That plan normally reflects three connected decisions:
- Goal: what the money is intended to fund.
- Time horizon: when you expect to need it.
- Risk tolerance: how much loss or volatility you can endure without abandoning the plan.
A change in any of those personal factors can support a review. The market reaching a record by itself does not.
Start with a portfolio check, not a market prediction
Use the high-water mark as a prompt to inspect your policy. A short, repeatable review is more useful than trying to forecast the next move.

Record the percentages your investment plan calls for, such as the intended split between stocks, bonds and cash or among other asset categories. If you never chose a target, pause before trading and define one that fits the goal, horizon and risk level. The target is the reference point for every later decision; the current account balance is not.
2. Calculate today’s allocation
Use current market values, not the amounts originally deposited. Add the values in each category, divide each category by the portfolio total, and compare the resulting percentages with the targets. Include all relevant accounts when your plan treats them as one portfolio, while noting which accounts have different tax rules.

3. Identify what actually changed
Separate market movement from deposits, withdrawals and account transfers. A category can become overweight because it rose, because you added money elsewhere, or because you changed the account structure. That distinction helps you choose a remedy instead of assuming that a sale is required.
4. Recheck your personal circumstances
Ask whether the date you need the money has moved, whether your financial situation has changed, or whether your ability to tolerate losses is different. Investor.gov explains that these personal changes can justify revisiting an allocation, while recent performance alone is not a reason to rewrite it. See Investor.gov’s Asset Allocation and Diversification guide for the framework.
How a rally can change your risk mix
Market gains can alter portfolio weights even when you do nothing. Investor.gov gives an illustration in which a portfolio that began at 60% stocks becomes 80% stocks after stocks rise. The example is not a recommended allocation or a prediction; it shows the arithmetic of drift. The portfolio now has a larger share exposed to the stock category than the owner originally selected.
Suppose your own target is 60% stocks and 40% bonds. If stocks rise faster than bonds, the stock percentage can move above 60%. The dollar value may look excellent while the portfolio’s behavior in a decline becomes less consistent with your original plan. Rebalancing means bringing the mix back toward the target—not trying to identify the exact top.
Choose a rebalancing policy you can follow
There is no universally correct review date or drift threshold in the cited guidance. Two practical policies are common: a calendar review and a threshold review. The best policy is the one you can apply consistently and that responds when the difference matters to your intended risk.

| Policy | How it works | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar review | Check the portfolio on a schedule you select, such as a recurring annual or semiannual review, and rebalance if it no longer fits the target. | Simple to remember, but it can trade when drift is small or wait while a large drift develops between review dates. |
| Threshold review | Rebalance when a category moves beyond a percentage-point or relative band that you set in advance. | Responds to meaningful drift, but requires monitoring and a written rule so decisions are not improvised during headlines. |
When comparing the two, consider how reliably you can follow the process, how much the allocation has moved, and the taxes and fees a transaction could create. Do not select a threshold merely because it is popular; select a level that is meaningful for your plan and practical for your accounts.
Ways to bring the portfolio back toward target
Rebalancing can be done with sales, new money, or a combination. Each method changes the portfolio differently.
Sell part of an overweight holding
You can sell enough of the category that has grown above target and use the proceeds to buy the underweight category. This is the most direct approach, but it can create a taxable gain in a taxable account and may incur transaction costs. In a retirement account, the tax treatment may differ, yet the account’s own rules still apply.
Direct new contributions to the underweight category
Instead of selling, send new deposits toward the category that is below target until the percentages move closer to the policy. This can reduce the need for sales, but it only works when you have ongoing contributions large enough to change the mix and when the account offers the investments you need.
Use dividends or interest for the underweight side
You can direct dividends or interest payments toward the underweight category rather than automatically reinvesting them in the holding that generated them. Vanguard describes this as one way to rebalance while limiting sales. The effect depends on the size and timing of the cash flows, so it may be gradual.

Combine methods across accounts
A plan can use contributions and distributions in one account while making a smaller sale in another. Review the portfolio as a whole, then choose the account and transaction that meet the target with the least unnecessary cost or tax impact. Keep a record of the target percentages and the reason for each trade.
Taxes and transaction fees belong in the decision
A gain in value is not the same as spendable cash. Selling an appreciated holding in a taxable account can create a taxable gain; the amount and treatment depend on facts such as the account, holding period and your individual tax situation. Trading can also incur commissions, spreads or other transaction charges, depending on the investment and provider.
The SEC’s official guide states: “Before you rebalance your portfolio, you should consider whether the method of rebalancing you decide to use will trigger transaction fees or tax consequences.” Read the full guidance at Investor.gov.
Before placing an order, list the likely tax treatment and costs for each option: selling, redirecting contributions, or directing dividends and interest. General educational guidance cannot determine your personal tax bill. If a transaction could materially affect your taxes, obtain advice based on your jurisdiction and account details.

Should you move everything to cash?
A record high does not prove that a market is overvalued or that a fall is imminent. Moving the entire portfolio to cash is therefore a market-timing decision, not ordinary rebalancing. It also changes the portfolio’s intended exposure and can leave you needing a second decision about when to buy back in.
Best Value
Cash can have a legitimate role when your goal, time horizon or risk tolerance calls for it, or when you need a known amount for a near-term expense. In that case, define the amount and purpose first, then adjust the plan deliberately. Do not use an all-cash move as a substitute for checking whether one category has simply drifted above its target.
Rebalancing is risk management, not a return guarantee
Vanguard distinguishes rebalancing from market timing: the objective is to maintain the risk and diversification characteristics of a chosen allocation, not to predict which asset will rise next. Rebalancing may require selling a recent winner and buying an asset that has lagged. That can feel backward during a rally, but the action is tied to the policy rather than to a forecast.
Rebalancing does not guarantee higher returns, prevent losses, or identify a market top. Its value is behavioral and structural: it keeps the portfolio aligned with the job the money must do and with the amount of volatility you agreed to accept.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical decision process after a record close
- Capture the snapshot. Save the date, total value, account types and current percentage in each asset category.
- Compare with the written target. Calculate the difference for every category instead of focusing only on the investment that made the news.
- Test the personal plan. Confirm the goal, expected spending date, financial circumstances and tolerance for losses.
- Set the action level. Apply your calendar or threshold rule. If no rule exists, document one before making a trade.
- Model each method. Compare a sale with redirecting contributions, dividends or interest. Include estimated fees and tax consequences.
- Place only the needed transactions. Bring the allocation toward target; do not trade merely to make the portfolio look busy.
- Record the result. Note the new percentages, transaction rationale and next review date.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing a high balance with excessive risk. Risk is determined by the portfolio’s mix and your circumstances, not by the account value alone.
- Changing the target after every strong month. Frequent changes can turn a long-term policy into a series of performance-chasing decisions.
- Ignoring account location. The same sale can have different consequences in taxable and tax-advantaged accounts.
- Rebalancing without a threshold or schedule. Without a rule, headlines can dictate timing.
- Assuming new contributions will fix drift quickly. The method depends on the size and regularity of your cash flow.
- Forgetting withdrawals. Taking money from one category can create drift just as market gains can.
- Treating an illustration as a prescription. The 60%-to-80% stock example demonstrates drift; it does not establish the right stock percentage for you.
When a professional review may help
Consider individualized financial or tax advice when your allocation spans several account types, a sale could create a substantial tax bill, your goal has changed, or you cannot determine a suitable risk level. Bring the written target, current holdings, account types, cost information and goal timeline so the discussion addresses your actual situation rather than the market headline.
For a concise explanation of why life changes can warrant a review, see the SEC’s “Is It Time to Rebalance Your Investment Portfolio?” Investor education can frame the questions, but it cannot replace advice tailored to your tax residence, account rules and objectives.
