Pack at least one familiar food your child usually eats, then add a small portion of a nutritious food they are still learning to accept. Keep the offer calm and optional: lunch is not the place to make a child earn a preferred food by eating something else first. As UW Medical Center registered dietitian Robyn Burnside puts it, “The best lunch is the lunch your kid is going to eat.”
Build a lunch around one reliable food and one low-pressure opportunity
Start with what your child actually eats at school. A packed lunch is only useful if there is something in it the child is likely to eat, especially when school leaves limited time for lunch. Include one or two familiar accepted foods, then offer a modest portion of another nourishing choice alongside them.

| Approach | What it does well | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Familiar accepted food | Makes it more likely your child has something they will eat and can reduce uneaten food. | A lunch made up only of familiar foods may offer fewer chances to explore variety over time. |
| Small serving of a less familiar food | Creates a gentle opportunity to see, smell, or taste a nutritious food without requiring a full serving. | If it replaces a food your child reliably eats, it may go untouched and add pressure or waste. |
These approaches work best together: pack food your child accepts while continuing to make other nutritious options available over time. If your child rejects a particular food group, try a different food from that group rather than insisting on one specific item; the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offers this advice in its guidance for picky eaters.

Offer refused foods again without turning them into a test
One refused lunch does not tell you whether your child will always reject a food. Familiarity can take time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says a young child may need about 8 to 10 exposures before being willing to try a new food. The AAP gives a different approximate figure, saying it can take 15 to 20 tries to like a new food. These estimates are not a guaranteed schedule or a threshold you need to meet; simply offer the food again another time, without pressure.

A small portion lets the child encounter the food without requiring them to finish it. Avoid bargaining, insisting on “one bite,” or withholding a familiar food until the less familiar one is eaten. The AAP recommends letting the child decide whether and how much to eat from the food provided by the caregiver. Pressure can make meals more contentious rather than more adventurous.
Give your child a real, manageable role
Children may feel more comfortable exploring food when they have some say in what goes into lunch. Offer a choice between two options you are comfortable packing, or invite them to help choose or prepare a familiar item. You can also eat the food yourself as a neutral example. These steps make participation easier, but none guarantees that a child will eat a particular food.

- Ask which familiar foods they want included from a short list.
- Offer two nutritious choices, such as two fruits or two vegetables, rather than an open-ended question.
- Invite them to help wash produce, assemble a sandwich, or pack a food they already like.
Playful presentation is optional. The AAP suggests sandwich cookie cutters as one way to make sandwiches interesting. Try them only if your child enjoys the idea; a new shape is not a solution to food refusal, and ordinary sandwiches are fine too.
Keep expectations grounded in normal variation
Favoring a few foods, resisting unfamiliar items, or not wanting different foods to touch can be common childhood behavior. The CDC says these preferences are often normal and often resolve by about age five. That is general guidance, not a prediction about an individual child or a reason to dismiss concerns about their diet or health.

Try to keep lunch emotionally neutral. Avoid labeling foods as “good” or “bad” or treating an uneaten item as misbehavior. Your role is to decide what foods are offered; your child can decide whether and how much to eat from them.
Pack food safely
Follow the AAP’s basic temperature guidance: keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. If there is no refrigerator available, use an ice or freezer pack for cold food, or an insulated container for hot food. The AAP explains these options in its back-to-school lunch guidance.

When to ask for individual advice
General picky-eating guidance cannot determine whether a particular child has a feeding problem or needs an individualized nutrition plan. If you have questions about your child’s diet or health, talk with their pediatrician. The AAP also identifies a registered dietitian as a resource for specific nutrition questions.
