Stay calm, identify the exact workaround, then close that gap on every device and account your child can use. Common routes include another browser or app, a service’s web version, deleting and reinstalling an app, direct file sharing, a reset or update, mobile data, another device, another Wi-Fi network, a guest profile, or a second account. Change the parent-controlled credential before changing more limits, and involve your child in the fix so the controls remain understandable and workable.
Start with an evidence check, not a punishment
A bypass can mean several different things: a limit was never applied to one device, a child found a legitimate alternate path, or an account or network is outside your administration. Record what happened, when it happened, which device was used, and which service was reached. Avoid deleting evidence if the incident involves bullying, sexual exploitation, self-harm, threats, or contact from an unknown adult; preserve messages and seek appropriate professional or emergency help.

Ask what changed
Use neutral questions: “Which device did you use?”, “Was it an app or a browser?”, “Did you use mobile data or another Wi-Fi network?”, and “Did a parent-approved task get blocked?” A cooperative explanation often reveals a missing setting faster than repeated password changes.
Check the usual bypass routes
- Another browser, an in-app browser, or a web version of the same service.
- A duplicate, portable, or newly installed app.
- Deleting and reinstalling an app after its limit or approval was removed.
- Direct file sharing, such as receiving an app, media file, or link from another device.
- A factory reset, operating-system update, or restored backup that changed restrictions.
- Mobile data, a neighbor’s or friend’s Wi-Fi, school Wi-Fi, or another home network.
- A second phone, tablet, Chromebook, computer, game console, or smart TV.
- A guest or secondary user profile, an additional Apple Account or Google Account, or an account not supervised by the parent.
- A VPN or other traffic-routing app that makes a network rule ineffective.
After identifying the route, test the fix yourself on the same device and network. A control that works only on the parent’s phone or home Wi-Fi is not a complete solution.

Secure the parent account and management credential
Parental controls are only as strong as the account and passcode that administer them. Change the parent account password if your child may know it, enable the platform’s available sign-in protections, and remove unfamiliar devices or sessions. Do not store a Screen Time or parental-controls passcode where the child can retrieve it, and do not reuse it for a device unlock code.
Keep one clearly identified control owner
Use a parent or guardian account as the control owner. Review who can approve downloads, purchases, account changes, location-setting changes, and communication requests. If two adults manage the family, agree on one source of truth and tell the child which adult handles exceptions; conflicting settings can look like a bypass.

iPhone: close gaps in Family Sharing and Screen Time
Apple’s family controls work best when the child has an individual Apple Account in the parent’s Family Sharing group and every device is current and included. An unmanaged Apple Account or an older device can leave the child with a path around a restriction.

On the family organizer or parent/guardian device, verify that the child uses an individual Apple Account in your Family Sharing group. Check every iPhone and iPad the child uses for a different account.
- Set the Screen Time passcode from the parent device. Create or change it from the parent or guardian’s device. The child should not create, know, or be able to recover this passcode.
- Update the family’s devices. Install available operating-system updates on every device in the Family Sharing group, then verify that Screen Time settings are synchronized. Recheck an older phone after an update or restore.
- Review app and purchase controls. Check allowed apps, app downloads, deletion and installation permissions, in-app purchases, and purchase approvals. Use Ask to Buy or Ask to Browse where those options are available to your family configuration.
- Review web and communication controls. Inspect web-content limits, Safari, other installed browsers, communication permissions, Communication Safety, and location-setting changes. Test a blocked site in both Safari and any approved browser.
- Inspect alternate access. Look for web versions of services, browsers embedded inside another app, AirDrop transfers, direct file sharing, and apps that duplicate a restricted service. Remove unapproved browsers or apps and prevent new installations until you have tested the settings.
- Check devices outside the group. Include an iPad, Mac, an old iPhone, a family member’s device, and any device used at another home. A restriction on one Apple device does not automatically govern an unmanaged device.
If the child says a school or safety task was blocked
Temporarily approve the specific app or site from the parent device, confirm the task is complete, and then restore the agreed limit. Record the exception in your family rules so the child has a predictable way to request legitimate access instead of searching for a workaround.

Android: verify Family Link and on-device controls
On Android, use the device’s parental-controls panel or Google Family Link. Google states that some Android settings are restricted when on-device controls are active, which is intended to reduce bypass options. The exact controls vary by Android version and device maker, so verify the setting on the child’s actual phone rather than assuming a parent-side change applied everywhere.
- Confirm supervision. In Family Link, verify that the child’s Google Account is supervised by the correct parent account. Check for a second Google Account, an account removed from supervision, or a phone that was set up without the child’s supervised account.
- Review time rules. Check daily limits, downtime or schedules, per-app limits, and the remote-lock option. Test a limit during the scheduled period and again outside it.
- Review approvals and purchases. Inspect app-approval settings, installation and deletion permissions, and purchase approvals. Remove duplicate or unapproved browsers and apps.
- Inspect web filtering. Review the web filter in Family Link and test the service in every installed browser. Check whether an app opens a browser window internally or offers a web version that was not covered by the original rule.
- Check Android account and profile settings. Look for additional users, guest mode, account changes, unknown-app installation, and settings that permit a reset. Restrict these options where the phone allows it and review them again after an update.
- Check reset, update, and reinstall events. Ask whether the phone was factory-reset, restored, updated, or had a restricted app deleted and reinstalled. After any of those events, re-open Family Link and the on-device parental-controls panel and confirm every rule.
- Test networks and mobile data. Compare behavior on home Wi-Fi, mobile data, and another Wi-Fi network. A home network rule cannot govern traffic that never passes through that network.
- Audit other devices. Include other Android phones, tablets, Chromebooks, computers, consoles, and smart TVs. Apply an equivalent rule or decide explicitly which devices are outside the family policy.
Close the specific gap you found
Do not add unrelated restrictions simply because one control failed. Match the remedy to the route and test it under the same conditions.

When a parental-control router helps—and when it cannot
A parental-control Wi-Fi router can add a whole-home network layer when several family devices use the same home connection. It may be useful for schedules or site categories that should apply across phones, tablets, computers, consoles, and smart TVs on that network.

It cannot enforce a rule when a child switches to mobile data, joins another Wi-Fi network, uses a device outside your administration, or connects through a route the router cannot inspect. Treat the router as an additional layer, not a replacement for account- and device-level controls. Test the policy with cellular data and a second network before relying on it.

Use controls without breaking trust
The Federal Trade Commission says, “Talking with your kids about your family’s rules and expectations is key to helping them establish good online habits.” Explain what changed, why the restriction exists, and what the child should do when a legitimate school, health, or safety need is blocked. Invite the child to review the rules with you and set a date to revisit them.
eSafety warns that secretive or overly strict monitoring can damage trust. Explain what information you can see, who can see it, and how long you keep it. Combine technical controls with shared-space or bedtime routines, age-appropriate supervision, and a clear process for asking for exceptions. A child who understands the rule has a safer alternative to quietly creating another account.
What the 2026 social-media figures do—and do not—show
In a 2026 eSafety Commissioner survey of parents whose children retained age-restricted social-media accounts, 66.8% said the platform had not yet asked for age verification. Another 23.3% reported that the child retained an account after bypassing the restriction by another method, such as false identity information, and 6.7% reported VPN use. These figures describe social-media age restrictions in that survey; they are not a universal bypass rate for iPhone or Android parental controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuild a maintenance routine
- After every update or reset: verify the parent account, passcode, supervised account, app approvals, web filters, and schedules.
- Monthly: review installed apps, browsers, profiles, accounts, VPNs, purchase history, and devices connected to the family network.
- When a new device appears: add it to Family Sharing or Family Link before handing it over, and test both Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- When rules change: explain the reason, document the exception path, and set a review date with the child.
- After a serious incident: preserve evidence, secure accounts, involve the school or platform where appropriate, and seek specialist help for threats, exploitation, self-harm, or unknown-adult contact.
eSafety’s guidance is explicit that no parental-control tool is 100% effective. Layer supervised accounts, device settings, network controls, communication, and regular reviews so one missed browser, network, or device does not become the only line of defense.
