The receiving carrier looks up the calling number in a Calling Name (CNAM) database, while a saved contact can replace that network result. Start by checking the recipient’s contact entry, then determine whether the error affects one caller or everyone. The caller may need to update the outgoing name with their carrier, and the recipient’s carrier may need to refresh its own record.
Why the name on caller ID can be wrong
Caller name is not a permanent property stored on the caller’s handset. When a call arrives, the receiving provider commonly queries a Calling Name, or CNAM, database that associates telephone numbers with names. The Federal Communications Commission describes the process this way: “The providers of caller ID services identify the name of the subscriber associated with the calling party by sending a query to a centralized calling name (‘CNAM’) database or directory that associates telephone numbers with names.”

Several things can change what appears on screen:
- The caller’s carrier has an outdated, misspelled, abbreviated or missing name in its outgoing Caller ID record.
- The receiving carrier uses a different CNAM database or has not refreshed its copy.
- The recipient’s phone has a saved contact whose name overrides the network-provided name.
- The caller has intentionally blocked their number or name.
- The network or device does not support caller-name delivery for that call.
- A fraudster has spoofed the number or name shown on the display.
Because more than one database can be involved, two people can see different names for the same number. A phone restart or a new handset cannot repair a carrier-side CNAM record.
First determine which problem you have
The quickest diagnosis is to compare the scope of the error, the side of the call that controls the data, and the exact display state.

| What you observe | Most likely control point | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| One person’s call has the wrong name | The recipient’s contact record, the caller’s outgoing name, or the recipient’s carrier lookup | Check the saved contact, then ask the caller to verify their Caller ID name |
| Every incoming call lacks a name | Recipient phone settings, a caller-ID app, the receiving carrier or network support | Enable Caller ID, remove conflicting apps, restart and update the phone, then contact the receiving carrier |
| Your own calls show the wrong name to other people | Your carrier’s outgoing Caller ID or Share Name ID record | Change the name through your carrier and allow the update to propagate |
| The display says Private or Anonymous | The caller blocked identity, commonly with *67, or the service cannot deliver it | Ask the caller to disable blocking; do not treat it as a spelling error |
| The display says Unknown or Unavailable | Caller ID data was not supplied, is unsupported on that route, or was blocked | Test another call and ask the receiving carrier whether caller-name service is supported |
| A familiar name appears but the call is suspicious | Caller ID spoofing | Verify the caller independently and report suspected fraud |
Fix a wrong name on your phone
1. Check the contact entry first
Open the Contacts app and search for the incoming number. Make sure the number is saved only once and that the spelling is correct. Remove duplicate entries, old numbers and misleading labels. If the phone has separate entries for a mobile, work and main number, confirm that the number actually arriving is attached to the intended person.
This matters because a local contact can override the name supplied by the network. Verizon’s Share Name ID guidance specifically notes that a saved contact may take precedence over Share Name ID. T-Mobile likewise recommends adding the contact and checking its spelling when the displayed name is incorrect.
2. Check Caller ID settings and third-party apps
If no incoming caller names appear, open the phone’s call settings and confirm that Caller ID or caller information is enabled. The exact label varies by device and software version. Temporarily disable third-party caller-identification, call-screening or spam-filtering apps; they may replace the carrier’s result with their own database.

Restart the phone after changing the setting and install any pending operating-system or carrier updates. Place test calls from two or three numbers. If names remain absent for every caller, the receiving carrier may have to investigate because the feature can be unavailable on a particular plan, network or call route.
3. Test the receiving side, not just the handset
Have the same person call another phone, preferably on a different carrier. If the second recipient sees the correct name, the first recipient’s contact record or carrier lookup is the likely cause. If both recipients see the same wrong name, the caller’s outgoing record is more likely to be wrong. This comparison also exposes cross-carrier differences that a single phone cannot show.
Fix the name other people see when you call
Update your outgoing Caller ID name
Contact your carrier or use its account-management app or website to change the outgoing Caller ID name. Some carriers label the feature Caller ID Name, CNAM, Share Name ID or a similar term. Enter a truthful, recognizable name and follow the carrier’s formatting rules. T-Mobile’s current guidance limits the Caller ID Name field to 15 characters, so a long legal or business name may be shortened.

Changing the name in your phone’s Contacts app does not change what other people receive. The outgoing carrier record is the part that must be updated.
Wait for the change to reach other networks
Updates do not appear everywhere at once. T-Mobile says outgoing-name corrections may take up to 72 hours. Verizon’s Share Name ID processing guidance says requests can take up to 24 hours. These are carrier-specific processing windows, not a guarantee that every outside provider will refresh its database at the same moment.
After the stated window, call a person on another carrier and ask what name appears. Record the number dialed, the time, the receiving carrier and the exact display text. That information helps support staff distinguish an unchanged outgoing record from a receiving-carrier cache.

Ask the receiving provider to correct a persistent mismatch
When your carrier confirms that its outgoing name is correct but one recipient still sees an old or wrong name, the recipient’s carrier controls that display. Verizon explains that the receiving provider determines what non-Verizon customers see and may need to be contacted for a correction. The recipient should open the support request, because the provider generally cannot alter another carrier’s customer record without investigating the receiving line.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Private, Unknown and Unavailable really mean
Private or Anonymous
A caller can intentionally block number and name delivery, commonly by dialing *67 before the call where supported. FCC privacy guidance recognizes number and name blocking. AT&T and Verizon describe displays such as Private, Anonymous or unavailable when identity information is blocked or cannot be delivered. The recipient cannot correct a deliberately hidden name from the handset; the caller must permit Caller ID on a future call.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUnknown or Unavailable
These labels do not necessarily indicate a misspelled CNAM record. They can mean that the originating network supplied no caller-name data, the route does not support the feature, or the caller blocked identity. Support can also vary between same-carrier and cross-carrier calls. Test more than one caller before concluding that the phone is malfunctioning.
Best Value
Wireless Caller or a generic label
A generic description may be the fallback text used when a carrier has a number but no usable name, or when the receiving database has not matched the record. It is normally a data or network limitation rather than evidence that the caller’s handset is defective.
How to tell a database error from spoofing
A wrong name can be accidental, but caller ID is not an authentication system. The Federal Trade Commission warns: “Scammers can use technology to fake the name or number on your caller ID.” A familiar company, bank, government agency or person’s name therefore does not prove who is calling.
- Do not provide passwords, one-time codes, payment details or remote-access permission solely because the display looks familiar.
- End the call and contact the organization through a phone number from a statement, official card, known website or previous correspondence.
- Never use a callback number supplied by a suspicious caller to verify the caller’s identity.
- Write down the displayed number, displayed name, date and time, and any callback number or claim made by the caller.
- Report suspected spoofing through the FCC complaint process; FTC guidance also recommends retaining the displayed and callback numbers when reporting.
Spoofing is different from a stale CNAM entry. A carrier correction may fix a consistently wrong name, but it cannot prevent a scammer from fabricating a different identity on a later call.
Who should take each action?
| Person responsible | Actions |
|---|---|
| Recipient | Correct or remove duplicate contacts; check Caller ID settings; disable conflicting caller-ID apps; restart and update the phone; test from another network; ask the receiving carrier to investigate a persistent mismatch. |
| Caller | Verify the account’s outgoing Caller ID name; submit a truthful name within the carrier’s character limit; allow the stated processing period; avoid identity blocking when the recipient needs to recognize the call. |
| Carrier | Refresh or correct its CNAM or Caller ID data; explain same-carrier and cross-carrier limitations; identify whether the call supplied identity data; provide a support or escalation route for blocked, missing or mislabeled calls. |
When to escalate and what to tell support
Escalate after you have checked the contact and phone settings, tested more than one caller, and allowed the relevant processing window. Be precise rather than reporting only that “caller ID is broken.” Give support:
- The calling number and the exact name or status shown.
- Whether the issue affects one caller, several callers or every caller.
- Whether the call was on the same carrier or crossed to another carrier.
- Whether the number is saved in Contacts and whether deleting the contact changes the display.
- The phone model, operating-system version and any caller-ID or call-screening apps.
- The date and time you changed the outgoing name, plus the carrier’s promised 24-hour or 72-hour window when applicable.
Ask whether the provider is reading a local contact, its own CNAM database, an outside database or no supplied identity at all. That answer determines whether the next step belongs to the caller’s carrier or the recipient’s carrier.
Prevent future caller-name confusion
- Keep one accurate contact entry per person and merge duplicates after changing a number.
- Use a short, recognizable outgoing name that fits the carrier’s limit; T-Mobile specifies 15 characters for its Caller ID Name field.
- Review caller-ID and spam-screening apps after major phone or operating-system updates.
- Tell regular contacts when you intentionally use identity blocking so a Private or Anonymous display is expected.
- Use independent verification for urgent requests, even when the displayed name is correct.
The practical rule is simple: fix the contact on the receiving phone, fix the outgoing name with the caller’s carrier, and involve the receiving carrier when only that network continues to show the wrong result. Treat Private, Unknown and Unavailable as delivery or privacy states, not ordinary spelling mistakes, and never regard caller ID as proof of identity.
