What to Do When Your Budget Android Phone Runs Out of Storage

Open Settings > Storage to see what is taking up space, then remove items you can replace—such as offline downloads or unused apps—before deleting personal files or app data. Menu names and available features vary by phone maker and Android version.

Find out what is using your phone’s storage

Go to Settings > Storage and review the breakdown. Start with the largest category, such as photos and videos, apps, downloads, or offline media. Your phone may use slightly different labels. You can also open its Files app to browse files by category or sort them by size; the app and its options vary by manufacturer.

Storage is different from memory. Google describes storage as where data such as music and photos are kept, while memory is where apps and the Android system run. Closing background apps does not remove stored files. Google’s general Android guidance says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free; that is a broad warning, not a guaranteed threshold for every model. Free space in the safest order

  1. Delete downloads and offline media you can get again. Remove downloaded movies, music, maps, podcasts, and similar content from the app that saved it. For example, Google’s storage guide describes removing downloaded items in Google TV and YouTube Music. Removing them inside the relevant app helps avoid deleting the wrong files.
  2. Uninstall apps you no longer use. Check for apps you can reinstall if you need them later. Google says a paid app can be downloaded again without buying it again, subject to the app remaining available.
  3. Clear an app’s cache selectively. Cache consists of temporary files; an app may load more slowly the next time you open it while it rebuilds them. In Settings, look for the app’s storage controls. Choose the cache option, not Clear storage, if your intention is only to remove temporary data.
  4. Move files you want to keep. Copy files to a computer over USB or to an SD card using Files by Google if your phone supports one. Open the copy at its destination to verify it before deleting the phone’s original.
  5. Remove local photos only after checking the backup. Confirm that the photos are backed up and accessible before deleting local copies. Google says backed-up photos can be removed from the phone and viewed in Google Photos when you have an internet connection.

Android’s storage instructions note that some steps apply only to Android 14 and newer. If the menu or option described here is missing, use the storage controls available on your phone rather than assuming every Android device has the same steps. Google: Free up space on an Android device

Cache, Clear storage, and app data are not the same

Clearing cache removes temporary files. Clear storage is more consequential: Google defines it as permanently deleting all app data. That can remove locally saved information or settings, so check the app’s own cleanup or export options and confirm any needed account sync before using it. Google: Free up space on an Android device

Consider app archiving for apps you rarely use

Google Play can automatically archive apps that you do not use often. Archiving removes the app while saving personal data and leaving its icon in place. You can download the app again if it is still available on Google Play. Google Play: Archive unused apps on Android

Can you move apps or photos to an SD card?

First check whether your exact phone model has a microSD slot. Android’s options depend on the handset and the card’s setup:

Card setup What it can store Portability and trade-off
Portable storage Files such as photos and videos The card can be moved between devices; Google says apps cannot be installed on it.
Internal or adoptable storage Apps and files The card is tied to that device and cannot be transferred to another device as a portable card.

Formatting a card permanently deletes its data, so copy anything you want to keep before formatting. Whether these options are available depends on the phone. Google: Set up an SD card on Android

When a computer or USB drive is a better destination

Google documents transferring files between an Android phone and a computer over USB. That is a useful option for keeping a second copy of large files without relying on a memory card. Confirm the files are present on the computer before removing them from the phone. Google: Transfer files between your computer and Android device

A USB-C flash drive or OTG adapter may also be an option, but compatibility depends on the phone and accessory. The cited Android guidance does not establish that a particular accessory will work with an unspecified budget phone, so check the handset maker’s specifications before relying on one.

What to avoid when storage is full

  • Do not clear app storage when you only mean to clear cache; clearing storage permanently deletes app data.
  • Do not delete photos or other wanted files until you have confirmed a backup or a verified second copy.
  • Do not assume your phone supports a microSD card, app installation on a card, or a USB accessory without checking its exact model.
  • Do not treat closing background apps as storage cleanup; it does not remove stored files.
