What to do when you run out of mobile data on your iPhone

If your iPhone has used its mobile-data allowance, connect to trusted Wi‑Fi, stop nonessential apps from using cellular data, and turn on Low Data Mode. Then check your carrier account or contact the carrier to see whether your plan can be replenished or restored. The exact add-on, price, speed and expiry depend on your carrier, plan and location.

Get back online first

Running out of mobile data does not stop your iPhone from working. It means services that need the cellular network may be blocked, slowed or charged differently by your carrier. Wi‑Fi can continue to carry internet traffic even when cellular data is unavailable. Apple explains that when cellular data is turned off, services such as email, web browsing and notifications use Wi‑Fi only. Connect to a trusted network before changing other settings. Apple’s iPhone cellular-data guide

Use a trusted Wi‑Fi network

  1. Open Settings > Wi‑Fi.
  2. Tap a network you trust and enter its password if requested.
  3. Wait for the Wi‑Fi icon to appear in the status area, then retry the app or website.

A public network may require a sign-in page before it provides internet access. Avoid entering passwords or payment details on an unfamiliar network unless you can verify who operates it.

Turn off cellular data if you need a hard stop

Go to Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions or software versions) and turn off Cellular Data. With that switch off, internet services use Wi‑Fi instead of cellular data. Calls and text-message behavior can vary by carrier and settings, so this switch should not be treated as a universal way to disable every mobile service. Apple documents the available cellular controls.

Stop optional apps from consuming the remaining allowance

You can block cellular access for individual apps while leaving cellular data available for essential services. This is useful if your carrier has not yet cut you off but you want to preserve a small amount of data for maps, messages or account access.

  1. Open Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data.
  2. Scroll to the app list. The screen shows each app’s cellular-data usage for the period recorded by the iPhone.
  3. Turn off the switch beside apps that can wait until you reach Wi‑Fi.
  4. Leave access enabled only for services you genuinely need away from Wi‑Fi.

When cellular access is disabled for an app, Apple says that app uses Wi‑Fi only for the service. The app can still work normally on Wi‑Fi; it simply cannot use the mobile network. See Apple’s per-app instructions.

Prioritize the apps most likely to use data

  • Video and music streaming apps can transfer large amounts of content.
  • Cloud photo and file apps may upload or download in the background.
  • Social and news apps can refresh feeds or prefetch media.
  • App stores may download updates when cellular access is allowed.
  • Navigation apps can download map areas or traffic information.

The iPhone list is a usage report and control panel, not a promise that an app will never communicate. System services and carrier accounting can be measured differently, which is why the carrier’s current-period figure is the one to use for billing decisions.

Enable Low Data Mode

Low Data Mode reduces background network activity; it does not add data to your plan or override a carrier’s suspension. On current iPhone guidance, use Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Mode > Low Data Mode. On some LTE or 4G configurations, the Low Data Mode switch appears directly under Cellular Data Options. Labels can vary by carrier, region and software version. Apple’s Low Data Mode guide

What the mode changes

Apple describes Low Data Mode as a way to restrict background use. Depending on the app and connection, it can:

  • Stop or reduce network activity when apps are inactive.
  • Disable Background App Refresh.
  • Reduce streaming quality.
  • Turn off automatic downloads and backups.
  • Pause iCloud Photos updates.
  • Change App Store download and update behavior.
  • Reduce Music quality or delay downloads.
  • Limit Podcasts refreshes and News prefetching.
  • Reduce FaceTime bitrate.

These are restrictions, not a guaranteed percentage saving. Individual apps can behave differently, and some foreground activity still uses data. Low Data Mode can be configured separately for cellular and Wi‑Fi, so enabling it on one connection does not automatically enable it on the other. Apple lists the documented effects and setup options.

Check whether Wi‑Fi is silently falling back to cellular

A weak or unusable Wi‑Fi connection can cause an iPhone to supplement Wi‑Fi with cellular data. Apple’s current feature is called Connectivity Assist; it appears under Settings > Wi‑Fi. Apple says it replaces and supersedes Wi‑Fi Assist, and that a device with Wi‑Fi Assist enabled when it updated may have Connectivity Assist enabled by default. Because this fallback can increase cellular use, review the setting when conserving data is more important than keeping a poor Wi‑Fi connection usable. Apple’s Connectivity Assist explanation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn off Connectivity Assist when conserving data

  1. Open Settings > Wi‑Fi.
  2. Scroll to the Connectivity Assist setting.
  3. Turn it off if you do not want the phone to supplement weak Wi‑Fi with cellular data.

Apple notes that Connectivity Assist is not used while roaming internationally or while cellular Low Data Mode is active, with some exceptions for streaming apps. That exception means Low Data Mode is still the more direct control when you want to reduce background use.

Older iPhone software

On older software, the comparable feature is named Wi‑Fi Assist and the setting is located at Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data. Apple’s legacy guidance says poor Wi‑Fi can trigger cellular fallback and use more data. Do not look for both labels at once: use the setting name and path that your software displays. Verify the allowance with your carrier

The iPhone can show per-app usage and lets you reset its statistics, but its counter may not align with the carrier’s billing-period total. Apple recommends contacting the wireless provider for the most accurate current-period usage and for network-service or billing questions. As Apple Support puts it: “For help with cellular network services, voicemail, and billing, contact your wireless service provider.” Apple’s cellular-data guide

Read the iPhone counter correctly

  1. Open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data.
  2. Review the total and the per-app entries.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and note the date of the current statistics period.
  4. Use Reset Statistics only when you intentionally want a new measurement period, such as the first day of your billing cycle.

Resetting the phone’s counter does not reset your carrier allowance, restore speed or erase the provider’s records. It only changes what the iPhone displays locally.

Questions to ask the carrier

Use the carrier’s app, website or support number, preferably over Wi‑Fi, and ask:

  • Has the allowance been exhausted, or is there a network outage or account restriction?
  • Does this plan allow a one-time data add-on?
  • Can normal-speed service be restored before the next billing period?
  • What is the total charge, validity period and renewal behavior?
  • Will an add-on apply immediately, and does it cover hotspot use?
  • What happens automatically when the add-on expires?

There is no universal refill code, price or amount. Availability, speed after exhaustion and billing treatment depend on the carrier, plan, country and account. Treat any offer shown in your account as plan-specific rather than as an iPhone feature.

Travel: prevent roaming charges

International travel is a separate case from exhausting a domestic allowance. Apple recommends turning off Data Roaming to avoid roaming charges. Go to Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data, select the relevant line if you use more than one, open its cellular-data options and turn off Data Roaming. The exact labels can differ by carrier and dual-SIM configuration. Apple’s travel and roaming instructions

If you need service abroad

Contact your carrier about an international plan or add-on before enabling roaming. A travel eSIM is another possible option, but it is not automatically cheaper, compatible or available everywhere. Confirm all of the following before purchase or activation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your iPhone model supports eSIM and is not restricted by a carrier lock.
  • The eSIM covers the countries or networks you will use.
  • The data allowance and validity match the trip.
  • Activation works with your available Wi‑Fi and identity requirements.
  • Hotspot, calls and text messages are included if you need them.

Apple presents international plans and travel eSIMs as options to discuss with providers; the terms come from the provider, not from iOS. Review Apple’s roaming guidance

If you still have no internet

Wi‑Fi is connected but apps do not load

  • Open a browser and complete any public-network sign-in page.
  • Check whether other devices on the same network also fail; that points to the network rather than your data allowance.
  • Forget and rejoin the network only if you know its password and trust its operator.
  • Temporarily disable Connectivity Assist if you are trying to prevent cellular fallback, then test again.

Cellular service is available but unexpectedly slow

  • Check the carrier account for an exhausted allowance, a speed reduction or an account restriction.
  • Confirm that Cellular Data is on and that the affected app is allowed to use it.
  • Check whether Low Data Mode or a carrier-specific restriction is affecting streaming quality.
  • Contact the carrier for the current-period measurement and restoration options.

The carrier says you have data, but the iPhone does not connect

Verify that the correct cellular line is selected if the iPhone uses dual SIM, then check the app’s cellular switch and restart the connection according to the carrier’s support instructions. If the account is active and the problem persists, the carrier is the appropriate source for network, provisioning and billing diagnosis; the iPhone usage screen cannot repair an account-side fault.

Prevent another surprise exhaustion

  • Reset iPhone statistics at the start of each carrier billing period so local trends are easier to read.
  • Review the per-app list regularly and disable cellular access for apps you use mainly on Wi‑Fi.
  • Keep Low Data Mode enabled on cellular when your allowance is small or unpredictable.
  • Download music, podcasts, maps and video over Wi‑Fi when the app supports offline use.
  • Review Connectivity Assist or legacy Wi‑Fi Assist if weak Wi‑Fi frequently triggers cellular use.
  • Use the carrier’s account meter for billing decisions, because it is the authoritative current-period figure.

No accessory, replacement phone, cable or case can restore an exhausted plan allowance. Restoring cellular data requires Wi‑Fi, a carrier-approved plan change or, when traveling, a suitable international service.
