If you repeatedly lose equipment in the current Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, the cause is usually the failed-exfil rule: carried Backpack items disappear unless they are in a Secure Slot. Extract valuable items, move them into the FOB Stash, and deploy with equipment you can afford to lose. If an Operator becomes MIA, recover that Operator with DMZ Cash, then equip a new Loadout because recovery restores the Operator’s Traits, not their gear.
These instructions describe the current 2026 Modern Warfare 4 DMZ systems. The original 2022 Warzone 2.0 DMZ used different rules, so check the game title and version shown on your screen before following menu instructions.

Why your loot disappears
Call of Duty’s official DMZ Deep Dive, Part 2: How to Play – Forward Operating Base (FOB) Full Intel Guide, published October 9, 2026, states that Backpack items and equipment are available during deployment, but “anything not placed in a Secure Slot is lost if you fail to Exfil.” A failed exfil includes being eliminated before extraction and other outcomes that leave the deployment unsuccessful.

Ordinary Backpack space is temporary risk. A Secure Slot protects an item under the current rules. The Stash at the FOB is a separate, persistent location for extracted loot. Simply owning an item, placing it in a normal Backpack space, or carrying it for a teammate does not establish that it will survive a failed exfil.

No official source establishes a percentage chance of losing loot, a guaranteed recovery mechanic for ordinary Backpack items, or a current insurance system that returns equipment after elimination. Plan around the documented rule rather than assuming a teammate, a larger ordinary Backpack, or a special weapon will be restored.
The inventory locations you need to understand
Backpack
Your Backpack contains items and equipment for the current deployment. It is useful for collecting resources, completing objectives, and carrying crafting materials, but most of its contents remain exposed until you either secure them or successfully extract and store them.
Secure Slots
Secure Slots are Backpack spaces added when the Backpack is upgraded. Items placed in those spaces are the exception to the normal failed-exfil loss rule identified in the October 2026 FOB guide. The guide does not specify every eligibility restriction or the complete capacity progression in the material available here, so do not assume that every item fits or that a particular upgrade grants a fixed number beyond what your in-game screen shows.
Stash
The Stash holds loot you have successfully extracted and moved back to the FOB. The current guide says the Stash is shared across Active Duty Operators, so you do not need to rebuild the same stored supplies separately for each Operator. The initial Stash capacity is up to 40 general items and 12 weapons; weapons are counted separately from general items. Those figures describe the initial version-specific capacity, not a permanent limit for every later upgrade or update.
Loadout
A Loadout is what you equip before deployment. It determines which stored or otherwise available equipment you are risking on the next run. Persistent Operator Backpacks and Loadouts support planned preparation, while Free Loadouts let you enter with combat essentials without committing scarce stored gear.
How to stop losing valuable equipment
1. Protect only the items that justify the risk
Before leaving the FOB, decide which item would be most painful to replace. Put an eligible high-value item in a Secure Slot when possible, then keep ordinary Backpack space for supplies you expect to spend, craft with, or replace easily. Because the official guide does not publish a complete list of item restrictions, verify the slot accepts the item instead of assuming that rarity alone makes it secure.

This is a risk-management choice, not a promise that a Secure Slot makes the whole deployment safe. Items left elsewhere in the Backpack remain subject to the failed-exfil rule.
2. Extract as soon as the objective is worthwhile
Do not treat a full Backpack as a reason to continue indefinitely. Once you have the resources, weapon, or objective reward you came for, prioritize an extraction route that matches your remaining armor, ammunition, time, and squad condition. The sources do not establish a universally safest map, route, weapon, or squad size, so the correct decision depends on your current deployment and the consequences of losing what you carry.
Use a simple test: if the next objective adds less value than the gear already in your Backpack, extraction is usually the more defensible choice. This is an inference from the documented loss rule, not a measured success-rate claim.
3. Move extracted items into the Stash
After a successful exfil, return to the FOB and move wanted loot into the Stash. Storage is what turns a temporary carried item into a resource available to your Active Duty Operators. Leaving an extracted item in a carried state for the next deployment increases the amount exposed to the next failed exfil.
Keep the Stash organized by purpose: equipment needed for a planned objective, crafting resources, replacement weapons, and expendable supplies. The shared Stash means that an Operator who survives can supply another Operator without requiring a separate collection run.
4. Match the Loadout to the chance of failure
If you are learning a new objective, playing with an unfamiliar squad, or repeatedly dying early, choose a Free Loadout or equipment that is already replaceable in the Stash. Save scarce or irreplaceable gear for a deployment whose expected reward justifies the risk. This recommendation follows from the current loss rules; it is practical advice, not a published test showing that Free Loadouts produce a particular survival rate.

Before deploying, ask four questions:
- How much of this equipment can I replace from the Stash?
- Can the most valuable item go into a Secure Slot?
- What objective or resource justifies risking the rest?
- Will losing this Loadout prevent my next deployment?
5. Stop carrying supplies you no longer need
Inventory space is not automatically valuable. If a resource has already fulfilled the current Order or crafting requirement, extract it or leave it rather than carrying it through another fight. The goal is not to fill every slot; it is to convert useful loot into persistent progress before the deployment becomes too dangerous.
What happens when an Operator becomes MIA
An MIA Operator is a separate problem from ordinary lost loot. The current FOB guide says you can pay DMZ Cash to recover the Operator. Recovery preserves the Operator’s Traits, but the recovered Operator returns without gear.
That means MIA recovery does not restore the Backpack, weapons, armor, or other equipment lost during the failed deployment. Equip a fresh Loadout before sending the recovered Operator back into the Exclusion Zone. If you immediately reuse the same scarce setup, the recovery payment solves the Operator-status problem while recreating the equipment-risk problem.

The guide establishes that DMZ Cash is required, but the material available here does not specify a universal price for every MIA situation. Use the amount shown in your current recovery interface rather than relying on an older guide or a remembered figure.
Rebuilding after a failed run
Use DMZ Orders
DMZ Orders award resources, loot, and cash for future deployments. Select an Order that helps replace what you lost or supplies the next crafting requirement. Orders can give a failed run a useful recovery path even when the Backpack itself is gone.
Craft at the FOB’s 3D Printer
Extracted resources can be used at the FOB’s 3D Printer to craft equipment and gear. After a loss, check the Stash first, then identify which missing component blocks the replacement. An Order that awards that component may be more useful than another high-risk loot run with no defined recovery target.

Keep progression separate from inventory recovery
The official June 6, 2026 Modern Warfare 4 DMZ overview says DMZ XP and progression rewards apply whether or not you successfully exfil. A failed run can therefore advance progression even though it does not return carried items. Treat those as two different outcomes: progression may continue, while the Backpack and non-secured equipment remain lost.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The same overview describes deployment as forward movement but emphasizes that greater success still demands skill and tactical judgment. In practical terms, a failed run is not necessarily a total account setback, but it is still an inventory setback that should influence your next Loadout.
A practical recovery plan for your next deployment
- Recover the Operator if necessary. Open the MIA recovery option at the FOB and pay the displayed DMZ Cash cost. Confirm that the Operator’s Traits returned and accept that their previous gear did not.
- Check the shared Stash. Replace the most important missing weapon or equipment from stored items. Do not empty the Stash merely to make the recovered Operator look identical to the lost Loadout.
- Choose a low-regret Loadout. Use a Free Loadout or replaceable stored equipment if the next objective is uncertain. Reserve scarce items for a clearly worthwhile deployment.
- Assign an Order. Pick a DMZ Order that awards the cash, loot, or resource needed for your immediate rebuild.
- Secure the highest-value eligible item. Place it in a Secure Slot and verify that the interface shows it there before deployment.
- Set an extraction threshold. Decide in advance what reward is enough to leave. If you reach that threshold, stop adding risk simply because Backpack space remains.
- Stash the result. After a successful exfil, move valuable loot into the shared Stash before preparing another run.
Decision guide: which strategy fits your situation?
| Situation | Gear at risk | Recommended action | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Learning an unfamiliar objective | High, because failure is more likely for you | Use a Free Loadout or replaceable Stash gear; secure one priority item when eligible | Limits the cost of an experiment under the current loss rule |
| Carrying a rare replacement item | High unless secured | Place it in a Secure Slot if the interface allows it, then extract promptly | Preserves the item without risking the entire deployment indefinitely |
| Operator is MIA but the Stash is healthy | New Loadout only; Traits remain | Pay DMZ Cash for recovery and equip replacement gear from the shared Stash | Recovery restores the Operator, not the lost equipment |
| Stash is nearly empty | Every equipped item matters | Prioritize Orders, Free Loadouts, and low-risk extraction over ambitious objectives | Rebuilds supplies while reducing another large loss |
| Backpack contains enough for the current Order | Additional loot increases exposure | Extract rather than continuing for marginal gains | Successful storage is more valuable than unbanked inventory |
Capacity facts for the current FOB system
- Initial Stash: up to 40 general items and 12 weapons, counted separately, according to the October 9, 2026 official FOB guide.
- Basic Pack: eight available slots without a proper Backpack equipped, according to that same guide.
- Secure Slots: available as Backpack spaces are added through Backpack upgrades; the reviewed guide does not provide every restriction or complete capacity schedule.
These numbers are tied to the 2026 Modern Warfare 4 DMZ version described by the official guide. A later patch, an upgraded FOB, or a different DMZ release may show different capacities.
Do not apply the old Warzone 2.0 rulebook blindly
Call of Duty’s November 2022 Warzone 2.0 Tactical Overview described the original DMZ as a single-life mode in which death caused the loss of all nonpermanent Backpack items. That historical description explains why older videos often tell players that death wipes carried loot, but it does not document every current Modern Warfare 4 system.
Secure Slots, the shared Stash, MIA recovery with DMZ Cash, and the current FOB capacity figures belong to the 2026 system described above. If your menus lack those features, stop and identify the exact game title, platform version, and update date. Do not combine a legacy guide’s assumptions with current instructions or expect an old map and interface to use the same inventory rules.
Common mistakes that create repeated losses
Confusing extraction with storage
Surviving the exfil is only the first step. Until wanted items are moved into the FOB Stash, they remain part of the equipment cycle you may risk on a later deployment.
Best Value
Equipping the recovered Operator with the same scarce gear
MIA recovery keeps Traits, not gear. Repeating the old Loadout without a clear objective can turn one failed run into two expensive deployments.
Assuming progression refunds inventory
DMZ XP and progression can continue after a failed exfil, but progression rewards do not mean that the lost Backpack items were returned.
Relying on unverified “best” routes
Official materials do not establish one universally safest route, weapon, map, or squad composition. A strategy that works in one patch, objective, or team may not preserve loot in another.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ignoring the value of a Free Loadout
Free Loadouts are designed for players who want combat essentials without committing stored equipment. They are especially useful when learning, rebuilding, or testing an objective whose failure would otherwise consume scarce gear.
The bottom line for repeated loot loss
In current Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, assume that a failed exfil removes carried Backpack items unless they are in a Secure Slot. Protect a priority item, extract before the risk outweighs the reward, move successful haul into the shared Stash, and use Free Loadouts or replaceable gear while rebuilding. If an Operator goes MIA, pay the displayed DMZ Cash recovery cost, remember that Traits survive but gear does not, and return with a new Loadout. Finally, verify your game version: the 2022 Warzone 2.0 DMZ rules are historical and should not be treated as a complete guide to the 2026 mode.
