Protect yourself first, then give the animal distance. If fire, smoke, unstable trees, debris, or an evacuation order is still present, leave and follow emergency authorities. Once the area is safe, watch from far enough away that the animal does not change its behavior. Most wildlife that survives a fire moves toward unburned habitat or shelters underground, and an animal that looks alone is not necessarily abandoned.
Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, a veterinary practice that accepts wildlife, or your state wildlife agency when you see a serious injury, confirmed orphaning, or another clear sign the animal cannot survive unaided. Do not feed, water, chase, capture, or transport wildlife unless a qualified professional gives you specific instructions and confirms a receiving facility.

1. Make human safety the first decision
During an active wildfire, the safest action for you and the animal is to leave. Smoke can impair breathing and visibility; fire-damaged trees can fall without warning; and ash, debris, utility lines, damaged structures, and firefighting chemicals can make a burned area dangerous even after flames disappear. Follow evacuation orders and directions from fire, law-enforcement, and emergency-management officials before attempting to help wildlife. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) identifies human health and safety as the priority during active fires.

Do not re-enter a closed or evacuated area to reach an animal. If you are already in a hazardous location, report the animal’s location to emergency personnel when you can do so safely rather than approaching it yourself.

2. Watch from a safe distance
After authorities declare the area safe enough for you to be there, stop well away from the animal and observe quietly. Do not approach for a photograph or to obtain a closer look. Back away if the animal changes direction, freezes, vocalizes, breathes faster, or otherwise reacts to you. Stress can cause an already injured animal to flee into traffic, fire-damaged structures, or other hazards.
A wildfire can look catastrophic while wildlife behavior remains normal. Animals may move into unburned patches, hide in vegetation, or shelter below ground. A deer, fox, rabbit, bird, or other animal crossing a road or resting briefly is not automatically in need of rescue. Keep children and pets away, stay on established safe ground, and continue observing only from a distance.
3. Decide whether there is clear evidence of an emergency
Intervene by calling a professional when you can see a strong, specific sign that the animal is injured or genuinely without a parent. Do not diagnose by trying to touch, corner, or restrain it.
| What you observe | Safest response | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Active fire, heavy smoke, unstable trees, debris, or an evacuation order | Leave and follow emergency authorities; report the animal only when you can do so safely | Your safety takes priority, and approaching can put both you and the animal in greater danger |
| Animal is alert, moving normally, or resting without visible injury | Keep distance, pets, and children away; leave it alone | Wildlife often escapes to unburned habitat or shelters underground after a fire |
| Broken limb, active bleeding, open wound, severe weakness, or persistent shivering | Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife-capable veterinarian, or state wildlife agency | These are clear signs of injury or exposure that require trained assessment |
| Young animal alone but clean, alert, and uninjured | Observe from a distance and give the parent time to return | Parents may be feeding nearby; temporary separation is common |
| Young animal with a deceased parent or obvious injury | Contact a licensed professional promptly and describe exactly what you saw | A confirmed orphan or injury warrants professional intervention |
When you call, describe the species if you can identify it, the exact location, the animal’s behavior, visible injuries, and whether smoke or fire damage is nearby. A clear description lets the professional decide whether someone should come to you or whether observation is sufficient.
4. Do not feed or give water
Offering food or water feels helpful but can worsen the situation. California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) warns that artificial food or water can keep wildlife in a burned area where burns, smoke, chemicals, and unstable conditions remain. Concentrating animals at a feeding or watering spot can also increase disease transmission and attract them to people, roads, or pets.

Food and water can be dangerous for an animal whose species, age, injuries, or hydration status you do not know. The wrong food can cause illness; forcing water can lead to aspiration; and a frightened animal may injure you while trying to escape. Remove bowls or food you have placed and keep normal household attractants secured. Let wildlife find appropriate natural resources or receive treatment under professional direction.
5. Contact the right professional
For a clearly injured or orphaned wild animal, start with one of these contacts:
- Licensed wildlife rehabilitator: The usual destination for assessment, stabilization, and species-appropriate care.
- Veterinary office that handles wildlife: Useful when the animal has severe trauma or a rehabilitator directs you there.
- State wildlife agency: The agency can explain local rules, provide wildlife hotlines, and direct you to permitted facilities.
Search your state agency’s website for “wildlife rehabilitator” or “wildlife rehabilitator near me.” Availability varies by species and location. A facility may be authorized for some animals but not others, may require an appointment, or may have no intake capacity after a large fire. Call before you travel and explain that the animal may have smoke or burn exposure.
Ask these practical questions during the call:
- Are you permitted to receive this species in this state?
- Can you accept an animal affected by burns or smoke?
- Should I leave it in place, or is a trained responder coming?
- If transport is authorized, what container, handling method, and destination should I use?
- What are your intake hours, and is there an after-hours emergency number?
Do not assume that the nearest clinic, shelter, or general animal rescue can legally or safely accept wildlife. Confirm the receiving facility before moving the animal.
6. Transport only after a professional authorizes it
USFWS advises calling ahead and making arrangements before transporting an animal. Capture and transport can cause additional injury, trigger defensive bites or scratches, and separate an animal from a parent that is nearby. Adults should not be chased or moved on your own.

If a licensed professional specifically directs you to transport, follow the instructions exactly:
- Confirm the destination, acceptance, arrival time, and after-hours procedure before picking up the animal.
- Ask what container and ventilation are appropriate for that species and size. Do not improvise if the professional says not to.
- Keep pets, children, food, and unnecessary noise away from the container.
- Do not give food, water, medication, or home treatment unless the professional explicitly instructs you to do so.
- Drive directly to the confirmed facility and tell staff where and when you found the animal, what you observed, and whether it contacted smoke, ash, water, chemicals, or fire.
If you cannot safely contain the animal as directed, tell the professional and wait for trained help rather than attempting another method.
7. How to tell whether a baby animal is orphaned
A young animal alone is not proof of abandonment. Many parents leave offspring hidden while they forage, feed, or draw attention away from a nest. Remaining nearby, calling repeatedly, or touching the baby can discourage a parent from returning and can expose the nest to predators.
From a safe distance, note whether the young animal is alert, warm-looking, uninjured, and able to move normally. Do not hover over it or repeatedly check. Give the parent an opportunity to return while keeping people and pets away. If the baby is visibly injured, persistently weak, cold, bleeding, trapped, or beside a confirmed deceased parent, call a licensed rehabilitator or state wildlife agency and follow its instructions.
Do not attempt to raise a baby at home. Young wildlife need specialized diets, temperature control, feeding schedules, and social development; well-intended care can cause permanent harm and may be illegal.

8. Understand what “displaced” means after a fire
Fire can remove vegetation, nesting sites, water sources, and cover. Surviving animals may therefore appear in neighborhoods, parking lots, roadsides, or other places they do not normally use. Displacement alone does not establish injury. An animal that is moving, alert, and avoiding people may be relocating to unburned habitat.
Give displaced wildlife a clear route away from people. Do not block its path, surround it for viewing, drive it toward a “safer” area, or attempt to herd it. Keep doors, windows, and pet areas managed so the animal is not cornered. If it remains in a dangerous location or shows the injury signs listed above, call for professional advice rather than intervening physically.
9. Keep legal boundaries in mind
Wildlife possession and rehabilitation commonly require state permits, and most birds also require federal permits. Rules differ by species and jurisdiction. Taking an animal home “temporarily,” keeping it overnight, or treating it without authorization can violate wildlife law and can prevent a permitted rehabilitator from accepting it.
State wildlife agencies, permitted rehabilitators, and wildlife-capable veterinarians can explain what is lawful where you live. Do not sell, keep, relocate, or release a wild animal on your own. Follow the agency’s instructions about documentation, transport, and handoff.

Even when flames are gone, a burned landscape can contain hazards that are easy to miss:
Best Value
- Smoldering material and hot ash can burn hands, paws, and lungs.
- Fire-weakened trees and poles can fall without visible warning.
- Debris, nails, broken glass, and damaged fencing can trap or cut animals.
- Runoff or residue may contain chemicals from structures, vehicles, or firefighting operations.
- Roads and evacuation routes may have fast-moving traffic, closures, or emergency crews.
These hazards are another reason not to enter thick debris, crawl under structures, or reach into holes after an animal. Tell the responding professional about the hazard so it can plan a safe approach.
11. What to do when no facility can take the animal immediately
A rehabilitator may be full, closed, or unable to care for that species. Do not interpret one refusal as permission to keep the animal yourself. Ask whether the facility can refer you to another permitted provider, whether the state wildlife agency has a current hotline, and whether a trained responder can assess the animal at its location.
While waiting for instructions, keep people and pets away and continue observing from a safe distance. Do not move the animal, offer supplies, or repeatedly call multiple responders with conflicting information. If conditions become dangerous, leave and update the professional or emergency authority from a safe location.

- Check for fire, smoke, unstable trees, debris, chemicals, traffic, and evacuation orders.
- If any danger is present, leave and follow emergency directions.
- From a safe distance, observe without chasing, touching, feeding, watering, or photographing up close.
- Record the location, species if known, behavior, visible injuries, and whether a parent or carcass is present.
- Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife-capable veterinarian, or state wildlife agency.
- Ask about species authorization, intake capacity, hours, after-hours help, and transport.
- Move the animal only when a professional authorizes it and confirms the receiving facility.
- Report the handoff and the fire-related hazards you observed; do not attempt home treatment or long-term care.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s concise guidance is to “leave wild animal rescue to trained professionals” and “do not attempt to capture or handle a wild animal.” USFWS similarly says that, most of the time, the best action is to leave the animal alone. Those instructions protect you, reduce stress and injury for wildlife, and give permitted responders the best chance to help animals that truly need intervention.
