What to Do When You Find a Bone Fossil—and How Experts Recover It

Bone fossils are not simply dug out of the ground: they are located and documented in context, collected only with the right authority, then prepared and stabilized by trained specialists. That context—the fossil’s position, orientation, and geologic setting—can be as important to science as the bone itself.

If you find a fossil in a U.S. national park, do not remove or disturb it. Photograph it, record its location, leave it where it is, and tell a ranger. Rules differ by landowner and jurisdiction; national-park guidance is not a blanket permission rule for other places.

Why a fossil’s location matters

A fossil is evidence from a particular place and geological setting. Its position and orientation, along with the surrounding rock or sediment, can help researchers interpret how it was buried and how it relates to other finds. Removing a bone without recording that context can permanently discard information that cannot be recovered from the specimen alone.

For authorized fieldwork, locality and geologic observations are part of the scientific record, not paperwork added after excavation. The National Park Service (NPS) notes that fossil fieldwork may use some of the same grids and tools as archaeology, while emphasizing the importance of recording a fossil’s original position and orientation. What to do if you find a fossil

In a U.S. national park

Leave the fossil in place. The NPS visitor guidance is to photograph it, record its location—such as marking the spot on a map or recording coordinates—then tell a ranger. Recreational, commercial, and educational collecting is prohibited in national park units; scientific collection requires an approved permit. NPS: Leave No Trace

On other land

Do not assume that the national-park rule or permit system applies everywhere. Requirements depend on who owns or manages the land and on the applicable laws. Before disturbing the ground or taking a specimen, identify the land manager and ask what permission is required. The NPS federal permitting guidance applies to research on NPS-administered land, not automatically to state, private, or international sites. NPS: Research Permits

How authorized fossil recovery works

1. Locate and document the find

Researchers record the locality and geologic setting, and document where the fossil lies and how it is oriented. Those records preserve the link between the specimen and the place it came from. Exact locality information can be sensitive: the NPS notes that some location details may need to remain confidential to protect fossils. NPS: Paleontology Fieldwork

2. Obtain permission and agree on the project

On NPS-administered land, paleontological research and collection require a scientific research and collecting permit. The permit defines the research, methods, and arrangements for curating collected material and its records. Permission must come before collection; a permit for one project or site is not general permission to collect elsewhere. NPS: Research Permits

How fossils are prepared and stabilized

Field recovery and laboratory preparation are separate stages. After a specimen is removed, a preparator may remove matrix—the surrounding rock or sediment—to expose the fossil. NPS describes tools such as air scribes, which remove matrix without touching the fossil, and dental picks or micro-needles for delicate detail. Smithsonian’s educational resource demonstrates an air scribe being used on a Ceratosaurus vertebra. These examples describe specialist preparation, not tools or instructions for working on an unknown find. NPS: Fossil Preparation Laboratory; Smithsonian: Fossil Preparation

Fragile material may need stabilization as preparation proceeds. NPS describes reversible plastics dissolved in acetone, and support cradles made with materials such as plaster bandages, plaster and burlap, quilt batting, or foam. The appropriate treatment depends on the specimen; these are not general-purpose do-it-yourself recommendations. NPS: Fossil Preparation Laboratory

Why preparation is specialist work

Fossil preparation can expose workers to debris and dust, vibration from tools, and noise. NPS preparators use eye and respiratory protection, vibration protection, and hearing protection. Its guidance says trained professionals should handle fossil collection and preparation; pneumatic tools and chemical treatments require appropriate expertise and controls. NPS: Fossil Preparation Laboratory; NPS Fossil Preparation Handbook

How preparation work is recorded and curated

Preparation records document what happened to a specimen and what condition it was in beforehand. NPS says records include the fossil, hours spent, tools or chemicals used, and pre-existing damage. The handbook also calls for documenting work and preservatives. This record helps future researchers understand the specimen and its treatment. NPS: Fossil Preparation Laboratory; NPS Fossil Preparation Handbook

Collected fossils and their associated records need an appropriate curatorial home under the project’s permit and land-management terms. On NPS land, curation arrangements are part of the federal permitting framework. NPS: Research Permits
