On a narrow road, never squeeze alongside a tractor or count on oncoming traffic—or the operator—to make a risky pass work.
What to do first
- Ease off the accelerator. Slow down smoothly when you see farm equipment ahead; avoid braking or swerving abruptly.
- Leave room behind it. Keep enough distance to see the road and stop if needed. Farm machinery can be difficult to accelerate, slow, and stop, and debris or agricultural products may fall from it. (MnDOT; North Carolina DPS)
- Assess before considering a pass. Check road width, bends, hills, junctions, sight distance, oncoming traffic, the equipment’s size, and any signs it may turn.
- If anything is uncertain, stay behind it. Do not squeeze past, force the machinery toward the road edge, or assume other drivers will yield.
- Pass only when the road is clearly safe and local law allows it. Leave enough clear road to complete the maneuver without cutting back in sharply. If no safe opportunity appears, wait.
Why narrow roads call for extra patience
Machinery can be wider or longer than it looks
Tractors and other farm equipment may carry wide or long loads and may need more room than a car. They can also move toward or across the center of the road while making a wide turn. A move toward the middle is not an invitation to pass; hold back until the vehicle’s path is clear. (NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi; MnDOT)

A stopped tractor may be about to turn
If the equipment slows or stops, do not assume it is safe to go around. It may be preparing to turn across the road. Stay back until its movement and intended direction are clear. (NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi)

The operator may not see you
Large farm vehicles can have substantial blind spots, including behind and alongside the machinery. Avoid tailgating and do not linger beside it; make your move only when you have a clear view and safe space. (MnDOT)

Road debris may be present
Mud, crops, or other material can fall onto the road. Keeping your distance gives you more time to notice debris and adjust your speed. (North Carolina DPS)
How to judge a passing opportunity
- Visibility: Can you see enough clear road ahead to finish the pass? Do not pass where a hill, bend, or obstruction limits your view.
- Clearance: Is there room for your vehicle, the farm equipment, and any load without crowding the edge or crossing into an unsafe path?
- Traffic and road layout: Is the opposing lane and the road ahead clear, and are there junctions or other hazards that could interrupt the maneuver?
- Equipment movement: Is it moving steadily, or has it slowed, stopped, or shifted position in a way that could signal a turn?
- Local rules: Do signs, road markings, and traffic laws permit passing at this location?
If you cannot answer these confidently, remain behind the equipment. Passing guidance varies by jurisdiction: North Dakota Highway Patrol advises drivers to ensure a pass is legal and warns against passing on a hill; New Zealand’s road code says to pass only when it is safe and legal. Follow the rules where you are driving. (North Dakota Highway Patrol; NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi)

Why the caution matters

These figures describe Minnesota only; they are not a national count or a measure of any individual driver’s risk. (MnDOT)
