When a website or app will not load, first determine whether the failure affects one service, one browser, one device, or the whole connection. Check the address, reload, verify Wi-Fi or mobile data, and compare the same page in another browser or over another network before changing settings. That scope test usually tells you whether to troubleshoot the site, Chrome or the app, the device, or the network.
Start by identifying exactly what is failing
Write down the device, operating system, browser or app, network in use, and the exact message on screen. Do not include passwords, authentication codes, or private account information when asking anyone for help. Google Chrome Help uses examples such as “A website won’t open,” “A photo won’t load,” “A new tab won’t load,” “Aw, Snap!,” and “This webpage is not available.” The wording is useful evidence, but it is not a diagnosis by itself.

Use the scope of the failure as your first clue
| What you observe | Most useful focus | Next comparison |
|---|---|---|
| One page or one app fails while other services work | The site, app, browser interaction, or saved site data | Open the same service in another browser or on another device |
| Several unrelated sites and apps fail on one device | The device connection, Wi-Fi, mobile data, or a network filter | Try another network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi |
| Every device on the same home network is offline | The router, broadband connection, or internet service provider | Check the router and test a different connection |
| Only one browser fails | That browser’s extensions, cache, cookies, settings, or update state | Try the page in another browser |
| Only one device fails on a working network | That device’s software, memory, clock, or security configuration | Test the service on another device |
These are diagnostic axes, not guarantees. A busy website can fail for everyone, while a local browser problem can affect only one person.

- Verify the address. Re-read the spelling and domain in the address bar. A hostname typo can produce a name-resolution error or send you to a different service.
- Reload once. Use the browser’s reload control. If the page partially loaded, wait briefly and retry rather than repeatedly opening many copies of it.
- Confirm connectivity. Check that Wi-Fi or mobile data is enabled and that the device shows a connection. Public Wi-Fi may require you to sign in through a portal before ordinary websites work.
- Try a known working service. Open another unrelated site or app. If it also fails, stop treating the original page as an isolated problem and investigate the connection.
- Restart the browser or app. Close it, reopen it, and retry. If the browser is crashing or the device is sluggish, close excess tabs and apps and pause large downloads.
- Restart the device. A restart can clear a temporary browser, app, or network state without deleting saved data.
- Check for updates. Install an available Chrome update through the normal update mechanism for your computer or Android device. An outdated browser is one possible contributor to connection resets and crashes.
Google Chrome Help’s guidance is direct: “If the issue affects multiple websites, check your internet connection.” Treat that as a branching rule, not as proof that your internet provider is at fault.

Compare browser, network, and device before changing settings
Another browser
Open the same URL in a different installed browser. If it works there, concentrate on Chrome: extensions, stored cookies or cache, settings, or a damaged browser session. If it fails in every browser on the same device, the browser is less likely to be the only cause.
Another connection
On Android, turn Wi-Fi off and test the page over mobile data, then repeat the reverse comparison. On a computer, a compatible Ethernet connection can be an optional diagnostic test; it is not a required purchase or a general fix. If the page works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi, investigate the Wi-Fi network, router, or its sign-in portal. If both connections fail for one site, the site itself may be having trouble.
Another device
Try the service on a second phone or computer using the same network. If both devices fail, a network or site issue is more plausible. If only one device fails, focus on its browser, app, clock, memory, security software, or managed-device settings.

Use Chrome’s targeted checks when the comparison points to the browser
Test in Incognito
In Chrome, open the menu and choose New Incognito window (or New Incognito tab on Android), then visit the affected address. Incognito provides a quick comparison with ordinary browsing data and, on desktop Chrome, commonly installed extensions. If the page works only there, a normal-profile setting or extension is a strong suspect; Incognito is a clue, not a permanent repair.
Disable extensions one at a time
On desktop Chrome, open the extensions management page from the menu or the extensions button. Turn off one extension, retry the page, and continue one at a time until the behavior changes. Re-enable extensions that are not involved. Avoid disabling security controls on a managed computer without approval from its administrator.
Clear browsing data only after simpler checks
Use Chrome’s menu, then Settings followed by Privacy and security and Delete browsing data. Labels can vary by Chrome version and device. Start with data relevant to the affected site rather than deleting everything automatically. Clearing cookies or site data can sign you out, remove saved preferences, and reset the site’s local state, so make sure you know how to sign in again before proceeding.

Reset Chrome settings as a last browser step
If the problem remains and other browsers work, Chrome’s Settings area includes Reset settings and an option to restore settings to their original defaults. Review what will change before confirming. A reset is more disruptive than an Incognito test or extension check and should not be the first response to a single failed page.

| Error or warning | What it indicates | Checks to perform |
|---|---|---|
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED |
Chrome could not resolve the hostname, or the hostname points to a different IP address. | Check spelling, try another site, and see whether the problem is limited to that hostname. Do not change advanced DNS settings without stronger evidence. |
ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED |
Chrome reports that the device is not connected to the internet. | Check Wi-Fi or mobile data, the device’s connection indicator, and any public-network sign-in page. |
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT |
The connection took too long; a slow network or a busy page is possible. | Retry after a short interval and compare with unrelated sites and another network. |
ERR_CONNECTION_RESET |
Something interrupted the connection. | Consider an unstable connection, an outdated browser, a VPN, or blocking security software, but do not assume which one is responsible from this code alone. |
| Certificate or date warning | Chrome cannot establish that the site’s certificate is valid for the current connection. | Check the device clock and complete a public Wi-Fi portal sign-in. On a work-managed device, ask the administrator about proxy or certificate configuration. |
| Redirect loop | Cookies may not be working correctly, leaving the site redirecting between addresses. | After recording the error, delete cookies for that site if necessary, accepting that you may be signed out or lose saved site state. |
When you contact support, report the full error code, the URL, time of the failure, browser or app version, device, and which comparisons worked. That is more useful than saying only that “the internet is broken.”
When Chrome or an app crashes, freezes, or will not open
Reduce memory pressure
Close unused tabs and other apps, pause downloads, and retry. A browser that crashes on new tabs or displays “Aw, Snap!” may be short on available memory, although the message does not identify a single cause. Restarting the device can release resources held by a stuck process.

Separate an app problem from a connection problem
Open another app that uses the internet. If other apps work, the failing app may have a service outage, damaged local state, or an account-specific problem. Restart the app and device, check the app’s own status or support channel, and avoid sharing private credentials. If several apps fail together, return to the network checks rather than repeatedly reinstalling one app.
Managed devices, VPNs, and security software
On a work or school computer, a proxy, certificate policy, VPN, firewall, or antivirus filter can interrupt connections. A reset or certificate change may violate the organization’s policy. Ask the device administrator to inspect those settings. Google warns that installing a certificate independently can create a security risk; do not download one from an unverified source just to bypass a warning.

Android and home Wi-Fi checks
Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data
Android’s connection settings show whether Wi-Fi or mobile data is active. Move within range of the existing router and check whether other devices can browse. If mobile data works while Wi-Fi does not, the fault is likely in the local network or its internet service. If Wi-Fi works but mobile data does not, contact the mobile provider after confirming that mobile data is enabled and available for the account and location.

Restart the existing router safely
Check the router’s indicators and follow its manual for a restart. Google Android Help describes unplugging the router, waiting, and reconnecting it; use the timing and sequence specified for your equipment. Do not press a factory-reset button unless you have the configuration details and explicit need to rebuild the network. Replacing a router or buying an extender is not an established first-line fix for a general loading failure.
Public Wi-Fi
Hotels, airports, libraries, and cafés may block normal traffic until you accept terms on a sign-in page. Open a simple, non-sensitive page to trigger the portal, complete the sign-in, and then retry the original service. If the network still blocks multiple sites, ask the venue’s Wi-Fi host rather than changing browser security settings.
Escalate to the party that controls the failing layer
| Persistent pattern | Contact | Information to provide |
|---|---|---|
| One website fails across browsers, devices, and available networks | The website owner or its support team | URL, exact error, time, region if relevant, and the comparisons you performed |
| Several websites and apps fail on home Wi-Fi after device and router checks | Your internet service provider | Which devices are affected, whether wired or wireless, connection status, and error text |
| Mobile data remains offline while Wi-Fi works | Your mobile provider | Device, location, signal state, and whether calls or other data services work |
| Only a public network fails | The venue or network host | Portal status, device, time, and whether other users or services are affected |
| Work or school device shows certificate, proxy, or policy errors | The device administrator | Screenshot or exact text, without passwords or private tokens |
Escalation is appropriate after you have captured the symptom and performed the low-risk comparisons. Do not keep changing unrelated settings when the evidence points to a site owner, provider, public-network host, or administrator.
