Microsoft’s built-in storage-health view is scoped to NVMe solid-state drives; it does not cover SATA SSDs or hard drives. A missing value can therefore be a compatibility or reporting limitation rather than a fault.
First identify the drive and interface, then query what Windows exposes with PowerShell. If that gives only a summary—or nothing at all—use the SSD maker’s supported diagnostic utility. Treat a critical warning, repeated errors, or worsening symptoms as a data-protection issue; treat missing information by itself as a prompt to investigate, not as proof that replacement is necessary.

Why Windows may have no SSD-health reading
Windows does not provide one universal health dashboard for every storage device. Microsoft’s documented storage-health feature monitors NVMe SSDs. SATA SSDs and hard disk drives are outside that feature’s stated scope. A SATA drive can be working normally while the Windows page remains blank or omits it entirely.
The storage path also matters. Windows can show information only when the device is exposed through a supported storage stack and provider. An SSD behind a controller, virtual-disk layer, or other configuration may not present the same information as a directly attached drive. A missing display is therefore an observation about what Windows can report, not a diagnosis of the NAND, controller, or remaining endurance.

Health status and detailed diagnostics are different levels of information. A simple status can indicate that Windows sees a physical disk and has a provider-reported state. It does not necessarily include SMART attributes, percentage used, temperature history, media-error counts, or a surface scan. Conversely, a vendor utility may expose those details even when Windows’ own page does not.
Identify the SSD before interpreting the missing data
Confirm the exact model and whether it uses NVMe or SATA. The interface determines whether the built-in Windows view is expected to apply and determines which manufacturer utility, firmware package, and replacement form factor are appropriate.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives.
- Record the complete model name shown for the SSD. Do not rely only on a generic label such as “NVMe” or “SSD.”
- For additional context, expand Storage controllers and note whether a vendor or RAID controller is present.
Device Manager is useful for identification, but it is not a wear-level or SMART report. A correctly listed model proves that Windows has enumerated the device; it does not establish that every health attribute is available.

Check system information or the drive label
The computer manufacturer’s system-information utility, firmware setup screen, or the physical label on the drive can confirm the model and interface. A 2.5-inch drive connected by a SATA data cable is SATA even if Windows calls it an SSD. An M.2 module can be either SATA or NVMe, so the M.2 shape alone is not enough to determine support.

Run PowerShell’s physical-disk query
PowerShell provides a practical second check. Open Windows PowerShell or PowerShell and run:
Get-PhysicalDisk | Format-Table FriendlyName, Manufacturer, Model, MediaType, OperationalStatus, HealthStatus, Size -AutoMicrosoft documents Get-PhysicalDisk as listing physical-disk objects visible through available Storage Management Providers. The command includes a HealthStatus field, along with identity, media type, operational state, and capacity.
How to read the output
- FriendlyName, Manufacturer, and Model: use these to match the result to the SSD you identified earlier.
- MediaType: helps distinguish an SSD from a hard disk when the provider reports that information.
- OperationalStatus: describes whether the provider considers the disk online or in another operational state.
- HealthStatus: is a provider-reported summary. It is not a complete SMART dump or a manufacturer endurance test.
- Size: helps distinguish multiple disks, but the displayed capacity is not evidence of remaining life.
If the SSD appears with a normal health value, Windows has obtained a status through that provider path. Keep in mind that a normal summary does not rule out every developing problem; use a vendor diagnostic when you need SMART attributes or a scan.

An absent row means only that Get-PhysicalDisk did not return an object through the available Storage Management Providers. It does not establish that the SSD is dead. Check whether the drive appears in Device Manager, Disk Management, firmware setup, or the computer maker’s hardware-information screen. A controller mode, enclosure, storage pool, or provider limitation can affect what this command sees.

If the drive is missing from all of those locations, or disappears intermittently, the issue is broader than a missing health display. Shut down before reseating an internal drive, verify power and data connections where applicable, and consult the computer or drive manufacturer’s support instructions. Do not initialize, format, or delete partitions merely to make a diagnostic tool recognize the disk; those actions can destroy recoverable data.
Do not mistake other Windows pages for SSD-health diagnostics
Windows Security: Device performance & health
The Device performance & health page in Windows Security checks several device-level items, including storage capacity. Microsoft does not describe this page as a SMART viewer, SSD-wear report, or endurance monitor. A green result there means the listed checks passed; it does not supply the missing NAND-health attributes.
Optimize Drives
Optimize Drives performs routine maintenance. For SSDs, that includes sending TRIM-related optimization commands when supported. The optimization status tells you about a maintenance operation, not about remaining write endurance, bad blocks, or controller reliability. A drive can be successfully optimized and still require investigation for errors; a drive that is not shown there is not automatically failed.

Once you know the exact brand and model, go to the manufacturer’s current support site and obtain the utility intended for that model and operating system. Support is model-specific: a utility may recognize only the maker’s drives, may expose different features for NVMe and SATA products, or may require a particular driver or firmware level.

What a vendor tool can add
- SMART attributes such as percentage used, reallocated or uncorrectable errors, and temperature, when the drive exposes them.
- A vendor-defined overall status that interprets those attributes.
- Firmware information and, in some products, an update path.
- Short or extended diagnostic tests that read selected areas of the device.
- Secure-erase or performance features that should be used only after understanding their data-destructive effects.
Samsung’s Magician documentation is one example: its drive-status view and SMART-related functions can display information for a selected supported disk. The product page showed Magician 9.0 when checked on October 13, 2026. That version and its supported models can change, so verify compatibility in the current documentation rather than installing an old utility from an unofficial download.
Safe procedure for a vendor utility
- Write down the model, firmware revision, and serial number from the utility or Windows before changing anything.
- Confirm that the selected disk is the intended SSD, especially when several drives are installed.
- Run the read-only status or SMART view first.
- Save or photograph any warning, attribute name, and error code.
- Run an extended test only after important files are backed up and the manufacturer says the test is appropriate.
- Do not start firmware updates, secure erase, sanitation, or performance modes until you have read the model-specific warning and confirmed a reliable backup.

What to do when a tool reports a warning
Critical warning or failed diagnostic
Copy important files to a separate, known-good destination immediately if the drive is still readable. Prioritize irreplaceable documents, photographs, credentials, and work data. Avoid repeatedly benchmarking, defragmenting, or running repair operations that write heavily to a failing device. Record the exact warning and contact the drive maker or computer manufacturer using the model and serial number.
Repeated errors, freezes, or disappearing drive
Symptoms matter even when a summary status looks normal. Unexpected read-only changes, file-system errors, system freezes during disk access, or a drive that vanishes and returns can indicate a connection, controller, firmware, or media problem. Back up first, then follow the vendor’s diagnostic sequence. If the SSD is inside a warranty system, the manufacturer may require its own test result before authorizing service.
Only the health display is missing
If the computer operates normally, the model is visible, PowerShell reports the disk, and no tool shows a fault, there is no evidence-based reason to replace the SSD solely because a Windows page is blank. Continue normal backups and check the manufacturer’s status utility periodically if it supports the drive.
When replacement is justified—and how to avoid a compatibility mistake
Replacement becomes a decision after an actual failure indication, repeated uncorrectable errors, or a manufacturer-recommended retirement—not merely after an unavailable Windows reading. Before buying anything, confirm the computer’s supported form factor, interface, maximum thickness, firmware requirements, and any capacity or boot-mode limits. An M.2 slot may support NVMe, SATA, or only one of those protocols; a 2.5-inch bay may require a separate mounting bracket or cable.
The available evidence does not identify one SSD model that fits every computer. Use the exact system model and the failed drive’s specifications when checking compatibility. If the original drive is still readable, clone or copy data before removal, and retain recovery keys and installation media needed to restore the operating system.
A concise troubleshooting checklist
- Identify the SSD’s complete model and determine whether it is NVMe or SATA.
- Run the PowerShell command and note whether the disk appears and what
HealthStatussays. - Interpret a missing Windows reading according to feature scope; SATA SSDs are not covered by the documented built-in view.
- Use Device performance & health and Optimize Drives only for the functions they actually provide, not as wear tests.
- Install the exact manufacturer utility when available and verify model support.
- Back up immediately after a critical warning, repeated errors, or worsening symptoms.
- Replace the drive only after an independent fault is established and the replacement is confirmed compatible.
Microsoft’s storage-health guidance and PowerShell reference were current when accessed on October 13, 2026; the PowerShell reference is for the Windows Server 2025 Storage module. Vendor utilities and supported models change, so use the manufacturer’s current documentation when you perform the check.
