Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA Wi‑Fi failure after installing Ubuntu is not automatically a driver failure, and a graphics problem is not solved safely by downloading a random installer. First record your Ubuntu release and the exact adapter or GPU model. Then separate a disabled radio or network problem from hardware detection, and use Ubuntu’s own driver tools for NVIDIA graphics. If Wi‑Fi is unavailable, a temporary Ethernet connection can provide updates and downloads while you diagnose the system.
Start by recording the release and hardware
Driver packages and kernel modules depend on the Ubuntu release, kernel, hardware revision and enabled repositories. Before changing anything, open Settings > About and record the Ubuntu version. Also record whether the computer is a laptop or desktop and whether the wireless adapter is built in, connected by USB or provided by a dock.

For graphics, identify the GPU model rather than relying on a product family name. You will need that model if Ubuntu does not offer a suitable package or if you need support from the computer or GPU maker. Do not begin by blacklisting a kernel module, purging packages or running a vendor installation script. Those actions can remove a working fallback and make Secure Boot or future Ubuntu updates harder to repair.

Check the radio and airplane-mode controls
Open the system menu and verify that Wi‑Fi is switched on. In Settings > Wi‑Fi, make sure the wireless control is enabled and that Airplane Mode is off. Many laptops also have a physical wireless switch or a keyboard key with an antenna symbol. Toggle it once, wait a few seconds and check the system menu again.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the Wi‑Fi control is missing entirely, do not assume that a package is missing. Continue with the hardware-detection checks below. A disabled radio and an undetected adapter look different and require different next steps.
Use NetworkManager to see the interface state
Open Terminal and run:
nmcli device
Look for a device whose type is wireless. The state tells you what kind of problem you have:
- Connected: Ubuntu has associated with a network. If websites still do not load, investigate the router, DNS, captive portal or internet service rather than replacing a driver immediately.
- Disconnected: Ubuntu sees a wireless interface but it is not currently associated. Check the network name, password, signal strength and whether the access point is working.
- Unavailable, unmanaged or no wireless device listed: Continue to hardware inventory. The adapter may be disabled, not detected, lacking support or affected by a hardware problem.
A connection that drops repeatedly can have several causes besides a driver: weak signal, incomplete connection setup or credentials, unreliable hardware, a busy network or an access point that is having trouble. Move closer to the router and test another network before making low-level driver changes. Ubuntu’s official troubleshooting guidance treats signal and network access as checks that come before assuming a driver fault.
Ubuntu can’t find my Wi‑Fi adapter: check hardware detection
Inspect all network hardware
Run:
sudo lshw -C network
This lists network hardware that Ubuntu can identify and provides clues about the wireless interface. Record the manufacturer, model and any displayed logical name. Do not copy a chipset-specific fix from a forum unless the model in that fix exactly matches your hardware and Ubuntu release.

For an internal PCI or PCI Express adapter, run:
lspci
For a USB wireless adapter, run:
lsusb
Save the relevant line from the output. A device that appears in lspci or lsusb but has no usable wireless interface suggests a support, firmware or driver issue. A device absent from the inventory can indicate that it is disabled in firmware, disconnected, defective or not being enumerated by the system. In that situation, installing a guessed package is unlikely to help; use the recorded model when consulting Ubuntu support or the computer maker.
Use Ethernet as a temporary bridge
If you have a working Ethernet port, dock or adapter, connect it directly to the router. A wired connection can let Ubuntu download updates, firmware and driver packages while Wi‑Fi is being repaired. Ethernet is a temporary path to the internet, not a replacement wireless driver and not a guarantee that the final Wi‑Fi problem is fixed. If you do not already have a cable, obtaining one is optional; many systems can instead use another working connection or a phone’s supported USB tethering.
Once online, install normal Ubuntu updates and reboot. An update can add firmware or a kernel fix, but it can also leave an older module loaded until the next restart. Keep the adapter model and Ubuntu release beside you while evaluating any package proposed by the system.
Recovering NVIDIA graphics with Ubuntu’s supported tools
Ubuntu’s current desktop guidance supports two management paths for NVIDIA drivers: the graphical Additional Drivers utility and the ubuntu-drivers command. They use the same selection logic and install Ubuntu-managed packages. By default, the command-line tool installs pre-built signed drivers, which Ubuntu documents as compatible with Secure Boot.

Graphical method: Additional Drivers
- Connect to the internet, using Ethernet if Wi‑Fi is unavailable.
- Open Software & Updates and select the Additional Drivers tab. On releases that expose Additional Drivers as a separate application, open that application instead.
- Wait for Ubuntu to detect the GPU and available packages.
- Choose the entry marked proprietary, tested for ordinary desktop use, unless your organization’s documented requirement says otherwise.
- Apply the change, authenticate when prompted and wait for package installation to finish.
- Restart the computer so the new kernel module is loaded.
The package names and branch numbers shown in the list vary with the Ubuntu release, GPU support, kernel and repository state. Do not select a branch number copied from an old article simply because it looks familiar.
Command-line method: ubuntu-drivers
For a terminal workflow, Ubuntu’s desktop guide gives this outline:
sudo ubuntu-drivers list
sudo ubuntu-drivers install
The first command lists drivers Ubuntu considers suitable for the detected hardware. The second automatically installs the best match selected by Ubuntu. Reboot after it completes. This method is useful when the graphical session is unreliable, when you are working over a text console or when you need a repeatable procedure on several Ubuntu machines.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUbuntu specifically recommends its packages rather than a driver downloaded directly from NVIDIA. Packages from another source can overwrite Ubuntu-provided files and may break Secure Boot. A vendor installer may also leave files that the normal package manager cannot cleanly track during a later kernel update.

Black screen after installing an NVIDIA driver: what to check
Confirm whether the installation finished
If the desktop is visible but the resolution, acceleration or external-monitor behavior is wrong, return to Additional Drivers and check which entry is selected. If the system cannot reach the desktop, use a text console where available, connect Ethernet and inspect the package state rather than immediately deleting driver files. The exact recovery path depends on the Ubuntu release and the display manager, so record the release and GPU before asking for release-specific help.
Do not treat every black screen as the same fault. A display cable, monitor input, sleep/wake issue, failed update or a graphics-session problem can produce similar symptoms. If the machine reaches a login screen and only the graphical session fails, collect the model, release and the last package operation for support.

Ubuntu’s server documentation explains that upgraded user-space libraries can temporarily coexist with an older NVIDIA kernel module that is still loaded. In this specific situation, rebooting loads the updated module and can bring the versions back into sync. This is a documented response to that exact message, not a universal cure for every black screen, login failure or graphics error.
What about AMD and Intel graphics?
Ubuntu commonly starts with open-source graphics drivers, and a proprietary driver is not automatically required just because a system has a discrete GPU. The available packages and recommended procedure for AMD and Intel depend on the Ubuntu release and exact hardware. There is no single, current command that can safely cover every AMD or Intel model.
First identify the GPU and Ubuntu release. Check Ubuntu’s matching documentation or support channel for that combination. Avoid legacy community-wiki commands and old package names: examples written for an earlier release can install the wrong stack or conflict with packages already supplied by Ubuntu. The live preview’s use of open-source drivers does not prove that every installed system needs, or benefits from, a proprietary alternative.

Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Installing before identifying the device: A package for a different chipset or GPU can leave the original problem unchanged and create a second one.
- Hard-coding a driver branch: Available NVIDIA branches change with release, kernel, GPU support and repository state. Use the recommendation shown by Ubuntu.
- Using a vendor installer as the first step: Outside packages can overwrite Ubuntu files and interfere with Secure Boot and future updates.
- Calling every connection failure a driver failure: A connected interface with no internet may be experiencing router, DNS, captive-portal or ISP trouble.
- Skipping the reboot: Updated kernel modules are not necessarily active until the system restarts.
- Copying old wiki commands: Legacy release names and package names are not reliable instructions for a current installation.
When to stop experimenting and ask for support
Seek Ubuntu support or contact the computer maker when the adapter is absent from hardware inventory, the GPU has no supported entry, Secure Boot prevents a package from loading, or repeated updates leave the system unable to start a graphical session. Include the exact Ubuntu release, adapter or GPU model, whether the hardware is internal or USB, the output relevant to nmcli device, lshw -C network, lspci or lsusb, and any exact error text such as the NVML mismatch. Those details allow a responder to distinguish detection, package selection, kernel loading and network-access problems without guessing.
