If volcanic ash is falling, stay indoors, close windows and doors, turn off heating or cooling equipment that draws outdoor air, and avoid driving unless authorities say travel is necessary. After the ash settles, clean without grinding particles into paint, glass, filters or electrical equipment. For drinking water, follow your water utility and public-health authority first: general ash guidance cannot replace a local advisory.
First priorities during ashfall
Reduce exposure
Fine volcanic ash can irritate the lungs and eyes, contaminate surfaces and enter mechanical systems through outdoor-air openings. Remain indoors while ash is falling, keep doors and windows closed, and follow emergency-management instructions if officials order evacuation or sheltering elsewhere. Turn off HVAC equipment that brings outside air into the building. If your system has a recirculation setting and local authorities permit indoor operation, use the setting that does not draw from outdoors.

Do not plan outdoor cleaning while ash is airborne. If you must go outside for an urgent task or cleanup, the CDC recommends a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator. A respirator reduces inhalation exposure; it does not make prolonged outdoor work safe. Keep the task short, avoid stirring ash, and follow local instructions about additional protective equipment.

USGS advises avoiding driving when possible because ash can damage vehicles, make roads slippery, suspend particles into the air, reduce visibility and irritate other people. Roads may also have impaired lane markings or standing ash. If emergency travel is unavoidable, wait for the safest window identified by local officials and drive slowly with extra distance from other vehicles.

Before ash arrives
- Move the vehicle into a garage or other covered location if you can do so safely before ashfall begins.
- If a vehicle must remain outside, use a cover that can be removed without dragging ash across the paint. A cover is not a substitute for avoiding travel.
- Keep the owner’s manual available. Air-filter locations, intake routing and cleaning instructions differ by make, model and year.
If you must drive in ash
Drive slowly. Ash can reduce traction and visibility, and following traffic can create an airborne cloud. Use ample windscreen-washer fluid rather than wiping a dry windshield. Do not use dry wipers on settled ash: hard particles between the blade and glass can scratch the windshield. If visibility becomes poor, stop in a safe place rather than continuing.
Do not run the engine without its air filter. USGS explains that ash can clog filtration and contribute to overheating or engine failure. Do not remove the filter as a shortcut to restore airflow. If the filter is loaded with ash, replace it with the vehicle-specific engine filter specified by the manufacturer before normal operation.
Clean exterior surfaces without causing abrasion
Never brush or wipe dry ash across paint, trim or glass. Dry particles can act like abrasive grit. Let loose ash settle, then use the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended rinse and wash method, taking care not to force ash into seals, vents or openings. Avoid improvised high-pressure cleaning that could drive particles deeper into components. Use the correct fluid and procedure for your particular vehicle rather than assuming a method suitable for an older model applies to a newer one.

Ash can enter openings and abrade brakes, seals, engine components, transmissions, paint and glass. After substantial exposure, check the engine air filter and the cabin filter according to the owner’s manual. A replacement is a maintenance response, not an automatic requirement after every minor ash event; the decision depends on how much ash entered the filter and the manufacturer’s inspection limit.

Arrange qualified inspection if you notice any of the following after ash exposure:
- Brake noise, vibration, pulling or a change in pedal feel.
- Warning lights, unusual engine noise, rough running, reduced power or overheating.
- Difficulty shifting, unusual transmission behavior or suspected contamination of fluid systems.
- Visible ash packed into intake openings, moving joints, seals or other areas that you cannot safely clean.
These signs are practical triggers based on the damage mechanisms described by USGS; there is no universal ash-depth threshold that determines when every vehicle needs service. A technician can identify contaminated components and follow the vehicle maker’s specifications.
Understand the limits of older vehicle guidance
USGS’s detailed vehicle recommendations draw on the May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens eruption. The agency cautions that some suggestions may be slightly out of date for modern automobile technology. Treat that material as a hazard guide, then use the current instructions for your exact vehicle and consult a qualified repair professional when the two differ.
HVAC system: stop new ash, then inspect methodically
During the fall
Close windows and doors and shut off HVAC equipment that draws outdoor air. Local emergency instructions take priority if a building’s ventilation is needed for smoke, heat, hazardous gases or other conditions. Do not open an outside-air damper simply to “flush” ash from the building while ash is still falling.

Check the filter before restarting normal operation
Once conditions are safe, turn the system off and inspect the installed filter and outdoor intake. Ash can load a filter quickly and accumulate on condenser radiators, restricting airflow and reducing performance. Typical household filters are not designed for the particle volumes produced by heavy ashfall, so USGS recommends regular inspection and replacement during an event.
USGS gives an extreme operational example in which filters might need replacement as often as every 30 minutes during very high ashfall rates. That is not a normal household schedule or a prediction for every eruption. Use the filter’s condition, the intensity of ashfall and the system manufacturer’s instructions to determine the interval. Replace only with a filter that matches the equipment’s dimensions and specified rating; a generic size or an unsuitable high-resistance filter can create a different airflow problem.
Clean accessible outdoor components
For an accessible intake or condenser surface, USGS’s cleaning sequence is:
- Switch off the HVAC equipment and isolate it from power as directed by the equipment instructions.
- Remove the contaminated filter before cleaning around it.
- Vacuum loose ash, or use gentle compressed air at no more than 30 psi. Direct airflow so ash leaves the equipment rather than entering coils, ducts or the building.
- Wipe remaining residue with a cloth.
- Install the correct replacement filter and inspect airflow before returning the system to ordinary operation.
Avoid wet cleaning around condenser fins, motors, wiring and controls. Moisture can clog fins by turning ash into paste and can create short-circuit or shock hazards. Do not open electrical panels or attempt energized repairs. If ash has entered internal ductwork, the blower compartment or electrical sections, or if the unit is unsafe to reach, use a qualified HVAC technician.

When professional HVAC service is prudent
- The system will not start, trips a breaker, overheats or produces an unusual smell or sound.
- Airflow remains weak after the filter is replaced and the accessible intake is cleared.
- Coils, fans, controls or duct interiors are visibly coated with ash.
- The outdoor unit is on a roof, near unstable ash deposits or otherwise unsafe to access.
Keep records of when filters were inspected or replaced. This helps a technician determine whether restricted airflow or repeated loading is continuing after the ashfall.

Public utility water
If ash is visible in tap water, do not assume that a clear appearance alone proves safety. Check the current notice from the water utility, public-health department or emergency-management authority before drinking, cooking or filling containers. Ask specifically whether the notice applies to your service area and whether it includes restrictions on boiling, bathing, pressure or filtration.
USGS public guidance states that ash-contaminated water will usually become unpalatable before it presents a health risk. That is general guidance, not a location-specific test result or guarantee. Ash chemistry, the amount entering the source, treatment processes and subsequent runoff can change the risk. Use the responsible authority’s current sampling and instructions rather than extrapolating from the general statement.

If ash has already entered a tank, do not invent a universal cleaning or treatment recipe. The appropriate response depends on tank design, the volume and type of ash, whether the water is used for drinking, and local testing or disposal requirements. Contact the local utility or health authority for directions on settling, drawing down, cleaning, disinfecting or testing. Keep the tank isolated from additional runoff while you wait for advice.
Why water quality can change
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s utility checklist identifies increased turbidity and acidity as possible ash-related changes in source water. It recommends that utilities monitor source-water and treated-effluent quality, including pH and turbidity. Those are utility-level controls; a household cannot reliably infer them from taste, color or a single home filter. Follow any local instruction about testing or alternative water.
Choosing the right response by system
| Situation | Immediate action | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Ash is falling and the car is parked | Keep it covered or sheltered; avoid driving. | Use qualified service after substantial exposure or if warning lights, braking changes or engine symptoms appear. |
| Ash is on a windshield | Use washer fluid; do not wipe dry. | Have scratched glass or impaired visibility assessed before routine driving. |
| HVAC filter or intake is coated | Turn the system off, remove the filter, vacuum or blow gently at no more than 30 psi, and wipe accessible surfaces. | Use a qualified technician for internal contamination, electrical work, unsafe access or persistent airflow problems. |
| Ash is visible in water | Check the current utility and health advisory; use only water the authority identifies as suitable. | Seek specific instructions for roof tanks, private supplies, testing, treatment or disposal. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Dry-wiping the car: This can grind ash into paint or glass and create scratches.
- Driving normally because the road looks clear: Fine ash can remain slippery, airborne and damaging even when deposits appear thin.
- Running an engine without its filter: Removing filtration can allow abrasive particles into the engine.
- Blowing ash at high pressure: Excessive pressure can drive particles into coils, seals and bearings. The USGS HVAC guidance specifies no more than 30 psi for gentle compressed air.
- Wetting electrical HVAC parts: Water can turn ash into a clogging paste and create electrical hazards.
- Assuming a household filter makes contaminated water safe: Filter performance depends on the contaminant and device; local authorities may require testing, an alternative supply or a specific treatment.
- Following an old checklist without checking current instructions: Conditions, ash composition and official advisories change. Recheck local emergency, utility and health updates.
What to keep ready for the next ashfall
- Replacement engine and cabin filters that match the vehicle’s make, model and year.
- The correct HVAC filter dimensions and rating for the installed system.
- A NIOSH-approved N95 respirator for each person who may need to perform necessary cleanup.
- Washer fluid and the vehicle owner’s manual.
- Contact details for the water utility, local health department and emergency-management office.
- A plan for sheltering the vehicle and disconnecting roof-catchment downpipes before ash reaches the roof.
These preparations support a safer response, but they do not replace incident-specific instructions. The amount and composition of ash, exposure duration, weather, source-water type and building design all affect the correct action.

During ashfall, reduce exposure first: shelter indoors, stop outdoor-air HVAC intake and avoid unnecessary driving. Protect the car by avoiding dry wiping and by maintaining its filters; protect HVAC equipment by inspecting filters and intakes, cleaning only accessible surfaces with low-pressure methods and keeping moisture away from electrical parts. Treat affected water as an authority-led question—especially for roof-catchment tanks—and use local utility and public-health instructions before drinking or treating it.
