On a Starlink-equipped United aircraft, keep the device in airplane mode with Wi‑Fi enabled, join the onboard United Wi‑Fi network, open the captive portal, and sign in to MileagePlus. If the page is missing or times out, reconnect to the network, retry in a normal browser window, temporarily disable iCloud Private Relay, and use Switch device if another device owns the session. A missing network can also mean the aircraft is not Starlink-equipped or that United’s onboard system is unavailable.

Start with the likely cause: Starlink is aircraft-specific

United is installing Starlink progressively, so the same route can operate with Starlink on one flight and conventional inflight Wi‑Fi on another. Check United’s official Starlink Tracker before troubleshooting the phone or laptop. The tracker was updated October 15, 2026 and is the authoritative way to check whether your scheduled aircraft is listed.

United reported more than 300 regional aircraft with Starlink in February 2026 and expected more than 500 mainline aircraft by the end of 2026, for more than 800 equipped aircraft overall. The first transatlantic widebody customer flight was United flight 14 on June 22, 2026; nearly 60 widebodies were expected to receive the system during 2026. A route, flight number or aircraft type alone therefore does not guarantee Starlink service.

What the tracker result means

  • Flight listed as Starlink-equipped: use the Starlink connection sequence below. The network should appear after the aircraft enables its cabin system.
  • Flight not listed: expect United’s conventional Wi‑Fi flow instead. The Starlink portal and its advertised performance will not appear.
  • Flight listed but network absent: treat this as a possible aircraft-side outage, delayed activation or schedule change. Ask the crew to confirm service rather than repeatedly changing device settings.

Connect in the normal sequence

These steps apply to a phone, tablet or laptop. Keep cellular service disabled while testing so the device does not silently use a ground connection or retain a previous Wi‑Fi route.

  1. Enable airplane mode. Then turn Wi‑Fi back on from the device’s quick settings or Settings app. Airplane mode can remain enabled while Wi‑Fi is active.
  2. Join United’s cabin network. Select United Wi‑Fi. The exact network label can vary by aircraft, so follow the network name displayed on the seat-back card or by the crew.
  3. Wait for the captive portal. Most devices show a sign-in notification. If nothing opens, launch a regular browser window—not a tab left open from an earlier flight—and navigate to the onboard United Wi‑Fi portal page.
  4. Choose Get Started. The portal asks you to sign in to a free MileagePlus account. Starlink access is free for MileagePlus customers on equipped aircraft.
  5. Finish United’s on-screen flow. Accept the displayed rules and complete any advertisement or confirmation screen. A 2025 hands-on report described the portal opening the United app when it was installed, prompting the passenger to connect, and displaying an advertisement before access.
  6. Test a simple page. Open a lightweight webpage first. Once that loads, test streaming, messaging or other demanding services; a successful portal login does not guarantee every service will work during every phase of flight.

If the United app opens and stalls

Leave the app handoff and complete the process in a browser if possible. Keep the United app updated enough to receive the portal handoff, but do not depend on the app: the captive portal can be completed on the web. Return to the browser, reconnect to United Wi‑Fi and start the flow again.

When the United Wi‑Fi login page will not open

A captive portal can fail because the device cached an old redirect, the Wi‑Fi association did not complete, or the aircraft service has not been enabled. Work through these checks in order.

  1. Forget and rejoin the network. In Wi‑Fi settings, select United Wi‑Fi, choose the device’s Forget This Network (or equivalent) command, then select United Wi‑Fi again. Do not turn off airplane mode while doing this.
  2. Close stale browser tabs. Quit the tab that contains an old login page and open a new normal browser window. Private browsing is acceptable, but use a standard browser rather than an embedded login screen inside another app.
  3. Reopen the portal manually. With United Wi‑Fi connected, open the browser and return to the onboard United Wi‑Fi portal page. If the page offers a timeout recovery link or a button to return to the portal homepage, use it and retry; United’s current portal explicitly provides that recovery path.
  4. Temporarily disable iCloud Private Relay. On Apple devices, turn Private Relay off, reconnect to United Wi‑Fi and repeat the portal steps. TechRadar reported in 2025 that United engineers advised Private Relay could make the Starlink connection fail or become slow. Re-enable Private Relay after landing.
  5. Try another device only as a diagnostic. If a second device sees the network and opens the portal, the original device has a local browser or network-state problem. If no device sees the network, move to the aircraft-side checks below.

Do not keep refreshing a page that displays a timeout. Return to the portal homepage first; repeated refreshes can preserve the same failed redirect and make the symptom look like an authentication failure.

Fix a MileagePlus or active-session problem

Another device already has the session

United’s portal permits an active internet plan to be moved to a different device. Select Switch device in the portal, then follow the sign-in prompts on the device you want to use. Switching transfers the active plan; it does not create simultaneous access.

Using two devices at the same time requires an additional guest purchase through the portal. If Switch device is missing, sign out of the first device if it is available, reconnect the second device to United Wi‑Fi, and restart the portal. Do not repeatedly create new browser tabs while the first session is still active.

You do not have MileagePlus

The free Starlink path requires a MileagePlus sign-in. Create a free MileagePlus account when the portal offers registration, then return to Get Started and authenticate. United’s published Starlink information does not establish a universal free, no-account path. A paid guest option may be presented by the onboard portal, but its availability and terms are not stated as a guaranteed feature for every flight.

The account signs in but access does not start

  • Return to the portal homepage and select Get Started again rather than using a stale confirmation tab.
  • Confirm that the device is still associated with United Wi‑Fi; switching to a different network can invalidate the handoff.
  • Use Switch device if another phone or laptop has the active plan.
  • If the MileagePlus page itself cannot load on the aircraft network, treat the issue as a portal or service problem rather than repeatedly changing your password.

Tell a device problem from an aircraft outage

Symptom Most likely layer Best next action
United Wi‑Fi appears, but the page is blank or loops Captive-portal or browser state Forget and rejoin the network, close stale tabs, disable Private Relay temporarily, then reopen the portal.
Portal says the session is active on another device Authentication/session Use Switch device, or purchase an additional guest connection for simultaneous use.
United Wi‑Fi never appears on any device Aircraft activation, coverage or cabin-network outage Ask a flight attendant whether Wi‑Fi is available or temporarily out of service.
Several passengers report the same failure Aircraft-side system Stop changing personal settings; wait for the crew’s status update and report the incident to United afterward if needed.

Passengers cannot repair an aircraft antenna, onboard power feed, satellite link or cabin network. A portable hotspot, travel router, USB Wi‑Fi adapter or external antenna cannot create Starlink access because the service depends on equipment installed on the aircraft.

Starlink and conventional United Wi‑Fi are different services

Do not judge the connection by the route or by another passenger’s experience. Use the aircraft listing and the portal behavior to identify which service you have.

Comparison Starlink-equipped aircraft Conventional United Wi‑Fi
Availability Only on aircraft that United has equipped; rollout is still changing by tail number and schedule. May operate on aircraft not yet fitted with Starlink.
Eligibility Free access is for MileagePlus customers on equipped aircraft. Eligibility and purchase requirements follow the conventional onboard portal.
Portal flow Join United Wi‑Fi, choose Get Started, sign in to MileagePlus and complete the displayed rules or advertisement flow. The portal may show a different sign-in or purchase path; the Starlink-specific flow will not appear.
Advertised capability United advertises speeds up to 250 Mbps and services such as streaming, shopping and gaming. Performance and available options are not the Starlink specification.
What a missing network suggests Possible aircraft-side outage or unavailable service if the flight is listed. The aircraft may simply not provide Wi‑Fi at that moment, so confirm with crew.

What to record before the flight ends

If the connection remains unavailable, note the flight number, travel date, aircraft identification if the United app displays it, device type and the exact portal error. A screenshot is useful if the device permits it without leaving the cabin network. Record whether the network was visible, whether the portal opened, and whether other passengers had the same problem; those details distinguish a personal session issue from a system outage.

Contact United after landing

During the flight, ask a flight attendant to confirm whether onboard Wi‑Fi is available or temporarily out of service. After the trip, use United’s Help Center and customer-care request form. Include the recorded flight details and the exact sequence that failed: network missing, portal timeout, MileagePlus sign-in, Private Relay disabled, or active-session conflict. Customer Care can investigate an aircraft or account event that no passenger setting can fix.

Why the service may change from one United flight to the next

United’s rollout explains many apparently inconsistent reports. The airline said its first Starlink-equipped regional flight operated in May 2025 and that Starlink was installed on more than half of its regional fleet by October 2025. By February 2026, United reported more than 300 regional aircraft equipped and planned more than 500 mainline aircraft by the end of that year. Widebody deployment was also underway: nearly 60 widebodies were expected to receive Starlink during 2026 after the June 22, 2026 transatlantic debut.

Those figures describe a fleet in transition, not universal coverage. A successful Starlink connection on yesterday’s United flight is therefore not evidence that today’s aircraft has the same equipment. Check the tracker for the specific flight, then use the portal and escalation steps that match what you actually see.
