What to do when two antivirus programs conflict or slow down Windows

Keep only one antivirus program with real-time protection. Two products that actively scan files, downloads, and processes can compete for the same resources, interfere with updates or installations, and in some cases make Windows unstable. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers to see which product Windows recognizes, choose the one you actually want, uninstall the other from Start > Settings > Apps, restart when prompted, and verify that protection is active afterward.

Microsoft describes the risk qualitatively rather than promising a particular amount of slowdown: “Using more than one real-time security product can affect your PC’s performance.” The practical goal is not to remove all security software; it is to have one active real-time provider and use additional scanners only when they run on demand or on a schedule.

Why two real-time antivirus programs can conflict

A real-time antivirus watches activity as it happens. When you open a document, download an installer, launch a program, or change a system file, the provider may inspect it before Windows lets the action continue. If two products do that simultaneously, both may intercept the same file or process, reserve memory and processor time, and react to each other’s quarantine or update files.

Microsoft warns that multiple real-time security products can reduce performance and may cause errors during updates or installations, including Windows Update error 0x80070643. Microsoft also describes possible instability or unexpected restarts when more than one antivirus or antispyware product is used at the same time. These are warnings about possible behavior, not a measured claim that every PC will slow by a fixed percentage.

Installing the Windows Security app does not by itself prove that Microsoft Defender Antivirus is scanning. Windows Security is the control panel; the active provider is shown under Manage providers. A compatible third-party antivirus normally puts Defender Antivirus into disabled mode while that product’s real-time protection is registered. After the third-party product is removed, Defender should normally return to active mode.

Check which antivirus is active before changing anything

  1. Open the Windows Security app from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage providers. (On some Windows 10 or Windows 11 builds, the wording or placement can differ slightly.)
  4. Record the provider listed for antivirus and whether its real-time protection is on. Do not assume that the first app you installed, or the presence of a product icon in the notification area, means it is the active provider.

If Windows lists one provider as active and another as disabled, you may not have two active scanners. You can still remove an unwanted installation to reduce confusion, duplicate notifications, and update conflicts, but first identify which product you intend to keep.

Choose the single real-time provider you will keep

There is no universal requirement to choose Microsoft Defender or a particular third-party product. Base the decision on your current Windows compatibility, the protection features you need, how reliably the product updates on your PC, support available for it, performance on your hardware, and recurring cost or renewal terms. The evidence available here does not establish comparative detection rates, independent laboratory rankings, prices, or licensing terms, so those should not be inferred.

Decision question What to check
Is it registered with Windows? Confirm it appears under Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers.
Does it support this Windows installation? Check the product’s current compatibility information for your Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and build.
Can it update reliably? Verify that engine, definition, and application updates complete without errors.
Does it fit your workload? Consider the features you actually use and observe performance on your own PC rather than relying on an unqualified benchmark.
Can you get help? Know how to contact the publisher if uninstalling, updating, or registering the provider fails.
What will it cost over time? Check current subscription, renewal, and device terms before committing; no prices are established by the Microsoft guidance discussed here.

Once you decide, leave that product’s real-time protection enabled. Do not disable both products merely to test whether the computer feels faster; that creates an avoidable protection gap.

Remove the unwanted antivirus through Windows Settings

Use the normal Windows uninstall path first. It is safer than deleting program folders or randomly stopping services, which can leave drivers, scheduled tasks, or registration entries behind.

  1. Save open work and close the antivirus interface.
  2. Select Start > Settings > Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps (called Apps & features in some Windows 10 views).
  4. Find the antivirus or internet-security application you do not want to keep.
  5. Select its menu, choose Uninstall, and follow the publisher’s prompts.
  6. Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it. Even when no restart is requested, restarting before you verify the provider can clear services that were still loaded.

If the app refuses to uninstall, stops partway through, or leaves Windows reporting an inconsistent provider, use the publisher’s official support or removal procedure. Microsoft specifically advises contacting the publisher when its software does not fully uninstall. Do not leave a half-removed security product in place while assuming Defender has taken over.

Keep the PC protected during the change

Removing the currently installed internet-security product can leave the computer unprotected if another antimalware product is not active. While real-time protection is off, files you open or download are not scanned in real time. Windows may turn Microsoft Defender real-time protection back on automatically after a short period, but that behavior should not be treated as permission to work unprotected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep the product you intend to retain installed and enabled before beginning removal.
  • Avoid downloading unknown files, installing software, or browsing risky sites during any gap in protection.
  • After the restart, return to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers.
  • Confirm that exactly one intended provider is active and that its real-time protection status is on.

If Defender does not return to active mode after a compatible third-party antivirus is uninstalled, use the Windows Security controls to turn protection on where available, then seek Microsoft or publisher support. Microsoft’s guidance says Defender should return automatically, but a damaged or unusual installation may not behave exactly like a clean one.

Distinguish an on-demand scanner from a second antivirus

Not every security tool that can scan your computer is a competing real-time antivirus. Microsoft says Microsoft Safety Scanner and Microsoft Defender Offline can coexist with a real-time product because they run only when you request them or, in the relevant case, configure a scheduled scan. They are useful for checking a suspected infection without installing a second always-on engine.

Before installing any additional security utility, read whether it registers real-time protection, browser or network interception, or continuous background monitoring. If it does, treat it as another active provider and do not run it alongside your chosen antivirus. If it is explicitly on-demand or scheduled-only, run it as directed and close it when the scan is complete.

If Windows is still slow after removing the overlap

Update the retained product

Install the latest application version and malware definitions for the provider you kept. Out-of-date engines can repeatedly retry updates or process files inefficiently. Restart after an update if the product requests it, then check Manage providers again.

Review unusually aggressive settings

Some antivirus products offer deep inspection, extra archive scanning, behavior monitoring, or extensive exclusions and alerts. Microsoft advises checking whether unusually aggressive settings contribute to false positives or resource use. Change one setting at a time, note the original value, and test normal tasks such as opening documents and installing a trusted update. Do not create broad exclusions simply to make a benchmark look better; exclusions reduce what the antivirus examines.

Separate antivirus symptoms from other causes

Record when the slowdown occurs: at startup, during a scan, while copying many files, or only during updates. A full malware scan itself can make a PC slower while it runs because it reads and analyzes large numbers of files. If the computer becomes unresponsive during a scan, update the antivirus application and definitions, close nonessential applications, and retry according to the product’s instructions.

Escalate with useful details

If performance problems remain after only one real-time provider is active, contact that provider’s support. Include the Windows version, antivirus version, definition date, the task that triggers the slowdown, and any error code. Microsoft’s detailed performance-tuning guidance is primarily written for enterprise environments; do not apply advanced exclusions or policy changes intended for managed fleets as routine consumer fixes.

What to do if you suspect malware

Do not install a second always-on antivirus in a panic. First update the active product and run its recommended quick scan. Microsoft also provides quick-scan guidance for Defender. If the quick scan identifies a threat, follow the quarantine or removal instructions and restart when requested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A full scan examines more data and may make Windows feel slower for its duration. Before starting one, update applications and definitions, save work, and close nonessential programs. If the full scan freezes or hangs, note where it stops, restart if necessary, and seek support from the antivirus publisher rather than repeatedly stacking additional real-time products.

Common situations and the safest response

What you observe Likely interpretation Recommended action
Windows Security shows a third-party provider active and Defender disabled Normal hand-off for a compatible product; not proof of a conflict. Keep the provider you chose, or uninstall it cleanly if you want Defender instead, then verify the result.
Two providers both report real-time protection on Two active engines may be competing for resources and file access. Choose one and uninstall or disable the other through its supported process; verify after restarting.
The PC slowed immediately after installing a second antivirus The timing is consistent with overlapping real-time monitoring, but no fixed slowdown amount can be assumed. Remove the unwanted product and compare normal operation only after one provider is active.
Uninstall completed but Windows says no provider is active There may be a delayed hand-off or an incomplete removal. Restart, check Manage providers, use Windows Security controls, and contact Microsoft or the publisher if protection does not return.
An on-demand scanner runs only when launched It is different from a continuously active antivirus. It can be used for a second opinion, provided it does not enable an additional real-time engine.
Updates fail with an error such as 0x80070643 Microsoft lists multiple real-time products as one possible source of update or installation errors. Confirm the provider list, remove the overlap, restart, update the retained product, and retry.

How to confirm the fix

  1. Restart Windows after the uninstall or any requested repair.
  2. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers.
  3. Check that the intended antivirus is listed as the active provider and that real-time protection is enabled.
  4. Run a small, ordinary task that previously triggered the problem, such as opening a trusted document or installing a known Windows update.
  5. Watch for repeated update errors, security alerts, or unexpected restarts. If they continue with one provider active, update that product and contact its vendor rather than installing another antivirus.

The durable fix is a simple configuration: one real-time antivirus, current definitions and application software, and any additional scanner limited to on-demand or scheduled use. That arrangement addresses the overlap without leaving Windows exposed during the transition.
