What to Do When the Power Goes Out: A Safe Home Blackout Checklist

When the power goes out, use battery-powered lights, keep the refrigerator and freezer closed, and check local utility and emergency alerts. If anyone relies on powered medical equipment, start their backup plan immediately. Never use a generator, grill, or fuel-burning heater or cooker indoors or near openings: carbon monoxide can be deadly and cannot be seen or smelled. What to do next depends on the outage’s duration, weather, household needs, and local instructions.

Before the outage: prepare the essentials

A small, accessible kit can make an outage safer and easier to manage. CDC reports that Americans lose power for about four hours per year on average; that is a population average, not a forecast for any particular home.

  • Keep a flashlight, headlamp, or battery-powered lantern and spare batteries where you can find them in the dark. A flashlight is a practical core item; headlamps leave your hands free. Check the manufacturer’s stated runtime and use batteries you can readily replace. No particular model is endorsed here.
  • Keep a battery or hand-crank weather radio, charged power banks and charging leads, and working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms with battery backup.
  • Place appliance thermometers in the refrigerator and freezer so you can assess temperatures after an outage. CDC recommends a refrigerator temperature of 40°F or below and a freezer at 0°F or below.
  • If someone depends on powered medical equipment, discuss an outage and evacuation plan with their clinician in advance. Check the device instructions and ask its manufacturer or distributor about battery or generator compatibility. Backup-power needs depend on the specific equipment.
  • Know where to find your utility’s outage updates and local emergency alerts. Charge phones and other essential devices when severe weather is forecast.
  • Set aside warm layers and blankets for cold weather. Identify a safe place to go if your home becomes dangerously hot or cold, and plan how you would get there.

For a fuller preparedness checklist, see the CDC’s Power Sources | Prepare Your Health and Ready.gov’s Plan Ahead for Disasters.

In the first minutes: check safety and act on urgent needs

  1. Check for immediate danger. If you see fire, smell gas, or someone is in medical distress, leave the unsafe area and contact emergency services from a safe location. Do not enter a flooded or damaged area to investigate.
  2. Check the outage status if safe. Use your utility’s outage information and official local alerts to see whether the interruption is widespread and whether authorities have issued instructions.
  3. Use battery lighting. Turn on a flashlight, headlamp, or battery lantern rather than relying on candles as your default light source. Keep a clear path through the home.
  4. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut. Opening them lets cold air escape; limit access while you assess how long the outage may last.
  5. Unplug sensitive electronics and appliances where practical. FEMA recommends unplugging equipment to reduce the risk of damage from surges when power returns. Leave essential medical equipment connected as directed by its care team or device instructions.
  6. Start the medical backup plan. If powered equipment is at risk of losing power, contact the care team or equipment provider promptly. If life-support needs cannot be maintained, seek emergency help rather than waiting for the utility’s estimated restoration time.

While power is out: avoid carbon monoxide and fire hazards

Never run a generator, grill, or other fuel-burning device inside the home, basement, or garage, or near doors, windows, or vents. FEMA says generators and outdoor cooking equipment should be outside and at least 20 feet from openings. Follow the equipment instructions and local fire-safety guidance, and make sure carbon monoxide alarms with battery backup are working.

It is designed for splash resistance only and is not intended for heavy rain, immersion, or underwater use. Measuring approximately 6.3"L x 3.5"W x 3.1"H and weighing about 1.1 lbs (500g), this compact weather radio easily fits backpacks, go-bags, vehicles, RVs, and emergency storage areas without adding bulk. Includes a built-in compass for outdoor navigation support.

Manual Tuning Required: extend the antenna, select NOAA mode, then slowly rotate the tuning knob until the clearest local NOAA station is received. This NOAA Weather Radio does NOT support SAME technology, automatic NOAA alerts, or location-based alerts; users must manually tune to and listen to NOAA broadcasts. Large controls make tuning easier for families and seniors.
  • 3 Charging Modes: Solar, Hand Crank & USB-C Input – Stay powered with USB-C Input, built-in solar panel, or hand crank generator when electricity is unavailable. About 1 minute of steady hand cranking provides 15–20 minutes of radio listening; actual runtime varies by use and cranking speed. The radio can be used while charging via USB-C, but charging may take longer. This Solar Radio and Hand Crank Radio supports hurricane supplies, camping essentials, outdoor adventures, RV trips, survival kits, and 72-hour emergency preparedness. Multiple charging methods keep your emergency radio ready for blackouts, storms, remote travel, and off-grid situations.

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless. CDC says more than 500 Americans are killed by carbon monoxide each year; its cited page does not specify the year for that figure. If a CO alarm sounds or anyone develops possible symptoms such as headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, chest pain, or confusion, get everyone outside into fresh air and call emergency services. Do not re-enter until authorities say it is safe.

Do not heat your home with a gas stove or oven. For outage-specific precautions, consult FEMA’s How to Stay Safe from a Power Outage and CDC’s Avoiding Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.

While power is out: protect food and medicine

Keep food cold and use time and temperature

With refrigerator and freezer doors closed, CDC says food can remain safe for up to four hours in an unopened refrigerator, 48 hours in a full freezer, and 24 hours in a half-full freezer. These are time limits under the stated closed-door conditions, not guarantees if food has warmed sooner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use appliance thermometers to check temperatures. CDC advises keeping the refrigerator at 40°F or below and freezer at 0°F or below. If the outage may last, use ice and coolers when available, while keeping food cold and avoiding cross-contamination. Follow official food-discard guidance; when you cannot establish that food stayed safe, discard it rather than tasting it. Smell and appearance alone cannot establish whether food is safe.

While power is out: manage temperature and stay informed

Dress for the conditions, use blankets in cold weather, and avoid unnecessary trips outside in dangerous weather. If indoor temperatures become unsafe, move to a safer heated or cooled location rather than improvising with unsafe heaters or cookers. Follow local authorities’ directions about shelters, water advisories, evacuation, and utility hazards; these instructions depend on where you live and what caused the outage.
