The right repair depends on the symptom. A wrong-app result usually points to request routing or an outdated Spotify app. No response, a “connection” message, or missing Siri controls requires Apple’s device-level checks for internet access, Siri setup, software, language, region, and—in some cases—VPN restrictions.

Start with an explicit Spotify request
Siri can control Spotify for songs, albums, artists, playlists, podcasts, mood or activity requests, and playback controls, according to Spotify’s Siri support guide. The service name matters because Siri may otherwise route a generic music request to a different installed app.

Say a complete request such as:
- “Hey Siri, play my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify.”
- “Hey Siri, play [song title] by [artist] on Spotify.”
- “Hey Siri, play the latest episode of [podcast] on Spotify.”
- “Hey Siri, pause Spotify,” or “Skip this track on Spotify.”
Spotify specifically advises appending “on Spotify” when Siri plays from another service. Naming the content is also important when Siri does not resume the previous item; request the song, playlist, album, artist, or podcast by name rather than saying only “continue.”

Identify which failure you have
Separate an app-routing problem from a general Siri problem before changing settings. This prevents you from troubleshooting the whole phone when only the destination phrase is ambiguous.
Siri answers but starts another music service
If Siri hears you, replies normally, and starts music in the wrong app, the assistant is functioning. Repeat the request with the exact item and “on Spotify”. Then update Spotify and restart the phone, the sequence recommended by Spotify for unexpected Siri behavior.
Siri does not hear you, answer, or reports a connection problem
This is broader than Spotify. Check the device’s internet connection, confirm Siri is enabled, review Siri’s listening and voice setup, and install available device software updates. Apple documents these checks in If Siri isn’t working on your iPhone or iPad.

Siri responds, but Spotify cannot play the requested item
First open Spotify and try starting any available track or podcast manually. If playback fails there too, the voice command is not the only issue; finish the app update and phone-restart steps before testing Siri again. If Spotify plays normally by touch but Siri fails, return to the explicit command format and verify that you named an item Spotify can find.
Step-by-step recovery
- State Spotify as the destination. Ask for a specific item and put “on Spotify” at the end. For example, “Hey Siri, play my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify.” Wait for Siri to confirm and observe which app opens.
- Update Spotify. Open the App Store, find Spotify, and install an available update. Spotify’s support wording is: “Make sure you have the latest version of Spotify, then restart your phone and try your request again.”
- Restart the iPhone or iPad. After the update completes, restart the device normally. Retry the same named request rather than changing several variables at once.
- Test Spotify without Siri. Launch Spotify and start a track, album, playlist, or podcast manually. This tells you whether the app itself can reach its service and play audio. If manual playback fails, resolve that app or network condition before judging Siri.
- Verify internet access. Siri needs a working connection to process requests. Check that the device is online, then retry the voice command. A connection warning points to this system-level check rather than to the wording of the Spotify request.
- Check Siri’s settings. Open Settings and look for Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri; Apple says the label varies by iOS version. Confirm Siri is enabled and complete the listen/voice setup controls shown on your device. If Siri controls are missing after a restart, Apple advises checking VPN settings because some VPN profiles may not allow Siri.
- Install device software updates. Apple includes updating iPhone or iPad software among its Siri troubleshooting checks. After updating, repeat the same explicit Spotify request.
- Use the item’s exact name. If Siri does not resume the previous playback, say the title of the song, playlist, album, artist, or podcast. A named request gives Siri a concrete search target instead of relying on prior playback context.
- Retry with a second supported request. Test a different content type, such as an artist or podcast. If one type works and another does not, record the exact wording and item; the problem may be content matching rather than Siri activation.
Use the correct Siri menu name for your iOS version
Apple does not use one permanent label for Siri preferences. Depending on the installed version, Settings may show Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri. Regional and language availability also affect which Siri features and commands appear. Do not treat a missing Apple Intelligence option as proof that Spotify is unsupported; first check whether that feature is offered for your language and region.

Compatibility and availability
Spotify’s official guide lists the following supported contexts. Requirements can change, so check the live support page when an older device or a newly released software version is involved.

If the Apple Intelligence route is unavailable where you live or in your language, use the standard Siri request and append “on Spotify.” A device outside the listed operating-system requirements may still have ordinary Siri capabilities, but Spotify’s stated compatibility is the safer reference for this integration.

When a command fails, keep the item and destination explicit while changing only one part of the wording. This makes it easier to tell whether the issue is recognition, routing, or the requested content.

A practical decision tree
Case 1: Wrong app, otherwise normal Siri
- Add “on Spotify” to the request.
- Name the exact song, playlist, album, artist, or podcast.
- Update Spotify, restart the phone, and test again.
There is no reason to begin with VPN or voice-setup changes when Siri is already hearing and answering correctly.
Case 2: Siri fails for every request
- Confirm the device has internet access.
- Open Settings and check the Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri controls.
- Review the listen/voice setup and ensure Siri is enabled.
- Update the operating system.
- If Siri settings do not appear after a restart, inspect VPN profiles; Apple warns that some profiles can block Siri.
Once Siri answers ordinary requests again, test Spotify with a named item and the app name.
Case 3: Only one type of Spotify request fails
Try another supported category, such as a known song after a failed podcast request. Keep the exact item name and app destination in the command. If manual Spotify playback works but one voice request consistently fails, the limitation may be recognition or content matching rather than a device-wide Siri outage.
Case 4: The feature is missing in your language or region
Siri features and commands vary by language, country, and region. The Apple Intelligence path also has Spotify’s specific English, device, operating-system, and regional conditions. Use the standard Spotify wording where the newer path is not available, and consult Spotify’s current support page for changes.
Common pitfalls
- Leaving out the app name: “Play music” does not clearly identify Spotify. Add the destination.
- Relying on resume: Siri may not know which previous item you mean. State the title.
- Updating only iOS: Spotify’s app version also matters. Update Spotify itself, then restart the phone.
- Assuming Apple’s examples are Spotify commands: Apple’s general music guide is not a Spotify-specific command list.
- Ignoring regional differences: Menu labels, languages, Siri features, and Apple Intelligence availability are not identical everywhere.
- Changing many settings at once: Test one request after each major change so you can identify whether routing, connectivity, software, or availability caused the failure.
