What to Do When Police Won’t Stop Searching for You in GTA 6

If police stop chasing but continue searching in GTA 6, treat the break in line of sight as the beginning of an evasion phase—not proof that you are clear. Preview reporting says officers can retain information about your clothing, face, vehicle and companions. Change the information they are using: abandon or switch the known vehicle, split up if police have identified the group, and, during a reported three-star city pursuit, leave the streets and move through alleys on foot. Because police reportedly do not remain visible on the chase radar, use Focus to check their position. These tactics come from pre-release reporting and may change before the final game.

Why the police can keep searching after you escape

The reported system is designed to prevent an instantaneous reset. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told GamesRadar in coverage of an IGN interview that the team wanted to move beyond a situation where “you could lose the cops instantaneously, and then they forget about you instantly.” The intended replacement is a wanted response with more persistent memory.

That means two different situations can follow a getaway:

  • Direct pursuit: police are actively following or engaging you.
  • Search: you have broken direct contact, but officers may still be looking for a person, vehicle or group matching what they saw.

Preview footage reportedly shows a six-slot wanted display. In one described sequence, direct contact breaks while four red stars remain. The coverage presents that as a likely indication that police are still hunting rather than actively chasing, but the exact HUD rules are not confirmed. Do not assume that an empty road, a hidden vehicle or a few seconds without sirens means the wanted state has ended.

A crime has to be reported first

Nelson’s explanation says a witness or an alarm must report the crime before the wanted response begins. That does not establish that every crime, camera interaction or mission behaves identically; it only explains the reporting trigger described in the preview. If no witness or alarm has reported what happened, police may not react in the same way. Once a report exists, however, breaking sight of the first unit is not necessarily enough.

What police may remember

The reported icons and footage indicate that officers can retain several identifying cues:

  • your clothing and overall appearance;
  • your face or identity;
  • the vehicle you were driving;
  • the fact that protagonists were together.

These cues explain why hiding behind a corner can fail. The unit that lost sight of you may be searching for a matching vehicle or person, not merely following a live GPS trail. Preview material does not establish how long each cue persists or whether every mission uses all of them.

What to do, step by step

  1. Confirm that you have lost direct contact, but do not declare yourself clear. Use the environment to break the immediate chase, then assume a search phase is possible while the wanted display remains.
  2. Stop presenting the same vehicle as the identifier. If you can safely leave it, do so. The reported extended-look sequence shows the protagonists changing vehicles, after which a police vehicle fails to recognize the replacement. This is evidence for that situation, not a guarantee that every vehicle swap clears a wanted state.
  3. Change the group police are tracking. If officers know the protagonists are together, split up when the situation permits. Nelson says separating can lower police perception of the pair. Treat it as a way to reduce one recognition cue, not as a universal reset.
  4. At three stars in the city, consider abandoning the car. Nelson’s advice is usually to get off the streets and proceed on foot through alleys. A very fast vehicle or sports bike may sometimes help, but continuing on open roads gives pursuing units more opportunities to identify and surround you.
  5. Use Focus to locate police. The reported interview says police do not appear on the mini-map radar during a chase and become visible when the player uses Focus. The available reporting does not establish a universal button, so check your platform’s final control settings rather than relying on a copied input.
  6. Reassess after every change. A new vehicle, a separated partner or an alley route changes what police can identify. None of the preview sources supplies a guaranteed timer, radius or cooldown, so continue treating remaining wanted indicators as meaningful.

Choose the response that matches the situation

Situation Recommended action from preview reporting What it addresses What is not confirmed
You broke line of sight but the wanted display remains Stay in the evasion phase; avoid returning to the same exposed route. Police may still be searching from retained information. An exact search duration or distance.
Police identified your vehicle Leave or change the vehicle when safe. Removes the vehicle-recognition cue shown in the extended-look sequence. That every change immediately clears the wanted state.
Police know two protagonists are together Split up if practical. Reduces the pair cue Nelson says can affect police perception. Whether separation is required or always effective.
Three stars in an urban area Get off the streets and use alleys on foot. Reduces exposure to vehicle pursuits and open-road identification. That walking is always better than a fast vehicle or sports bike.
Police are absent from the chase radar Activate Focus to check their location. Reveals officers according to the reported preview behavior. The final platform-specific control or whether every mode uses the same display.

Why changing vehicles can help

A vehicle is a moving, easily recognized object. If officers saw you leave a crime in a particular car, hiding that car behind a building may leave the strongest clue intact. The preview sequence reportedly shows the protagonists switch vehicles and a police vehicle fail to recognize the new one. That suggests a practical order: break immediate contact, move out of the known car, and avoid driving the replacement straight back into the search area.

This is not the same as saying the game forgets your characters. The reported system can retain clothing or facial information independently of the vehicle. A changed car therefore addresses one identifier; it does not prove that the person inside is no longer wanted. If the replacement vehicle is visible during the switch, the exchange itself could also expose you, so perform it only when the surroundings allow.

When splitting up is the better move

Nelson says police perception can be lowered when the protagonists separate. This matters when officers have a reason to treat the pair as one target. Remaining together keeps multiple recognizable people in one place and makes a single search operation more effective.

Splitting up should be understood as information management, not a magic escape. Each character may still carry clothing or face cues, and the wanted response may continue for both. Use the separation to create different routes and reduce the chance that one patrol immediately reacquires everyone. The reporting does not specify a required distance, a time apart or a rule for reuniting, so do not invent one.

How to handle a three-star city pursuit

The clearest situational advice in the available preview is for a three-star wanted level in a city. Nelson says escaping in a vehicle can be difficult unless it is a very fast vehicle or a sports bike. His usual recommendation is to get off the streets and go on foot into alleys.

Why alleys change the problem

Open roads favor police vehicles: they provide long sight lines, predictable routes and room for several units to converge. Alleys break those advantages. On foot, you can turn sharply, use narrow passages and stop presenting one obvious vehicle target. The tactic is therefore about reducing exposure, not outrunning every patrol.

When a vehicle may still be reasonable

Nelson’s qualification matters. A very fast vehicle or sports bike may sometimes outperform walking, particularly before units have boxed you in. The reporting offers no controlled comparison, so choose according to the immediate layout: if streets are open and your vehicle has a clear route, speed may help; if units are already surrounding you or sight lines are short, the on-foot alley option better matches the advice.

Using Focus when the radar does not show police

The reported chase behavior removes a common source of information: police may not appear on the mini-map radar while they are searching. According to the interview coverage, they show up when the player uses Focus. That makes Focus a scouting action rather than an automatic wanted-level reset.

Use it to answer a specific question—whether a unit is near the alley, road or hiding place you plan to use. Because the sources do not establish a button layout, platform, accessibility setting or final control scheme, consult the in-game control menu for the shipped version. Do not assume a control shown in a preview or another platform’s guide will match yours.

Common mistakes that keep the search going

Returning to the scene too soon

Breaking sight of one unit does not establish that the broader search has ended. Going back toward the original crime, witnesses or patrol routes can put the same identifying cues in front of police again.

Keeping the marked vehicle

Parking the known car nearby and hiding on foot leaves the vehicle cue available to any unit that finds it. The reported vehicle-switch sequence is the reason changing cars is worth trying when safe.

Assuming a fixed timer

No supplied source establishes a countdown, search radius, cooldown or re-entry rule. Waiting for an invented number of seconds can make you move before the search has actually eased—or cause you to waste time expecting a guaranteed reset that may not exist.

Making up radar or control behavior

The specific reported behavior is that police are absent from the chase radar and appear when Focus is used. It does not establish every HUD icon, every mission exception or a universal button command. Treat those details as version- and platform-dependent until the final game documents them.

Three practical examples

Example: a car theft followed by a broken line of sight

You lose the pursuing unit behind buildings, but the wanted display remains. Do not drive the same stolen car back onto a main road. If a safe opportunity appears, switch vehicles, then use Focus to check for nearby police before choosing an alley or alternate route. The switch addresses vehicle recognition; it does not prove that clothing or face information has been discarded.

Example: two protagonists in one vehicle

After contact breaks, police continue searching for the pair. If the environment offers separate exits, one character can leave in a different direction while the other uses cover. Nelson’s advice supports separation as a way to lower police perception of the pair, but the wanted response may continue for both characters.

Example: three stars in a dense city

A sports bike or very fast vehicle may provide an escape route, but if patrols are converging on open streets, follow the reported recommendation: get off the street, abandon the vehicle when feasible and use alleys on foot. Activate Focus to check whether a unit is close before crossing into another passage.

What remains unknown

The available material is preview reporting and an extended-look sequence, not a complete mechanics manual or hands-on test. It does not establish:

  • a numeric search radius;
  • how long police retain each identifier;
  • a universal timer or cooldown;
  • what happens if you re-enter the search area;
  • whether cameras follow exactly the same rules as witnesses and alarms;
  • mission-specific exceptions;
  • final controls for Focus;
  • whether the reported six-slot display and four remaining red stars behave identically in the released game.

Rockstar can change systems between a preview and launch. Verify the final HUD, control layout and wanted behavior in the shipped version rather than treating preview advice as a guarantee.

The practical rule to remember

When police will not stop searching, stop trying only to become invisible. Remove the clues they are using: change a recognized vehicle, separate from an identified partner, and, at three stars in the city, trade exposed streets for alleys on foot. Use Focus to find units that the chase radar does not show. These actions are the best-supported responses in the preview coverage, but the final game may tune or replace them.
