Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf your Pixel Watch no longer wakes when you raise your wrist or tap the screen, check Bedtime mode first. Google says Bedtime mode turns off the display, Tilt-to-wake and Touch-to-wake. Exit Bedtime mode from Quick Settings, then check the relevant control under Settings > Gestures. Battery Saver is different: it disables Always-on Display but leaves Tilt-to-wake enabled.
If the watch is blank, frozen or ignores the crown as well as gestures, treat that as an unresponsive-watch problem rather than a missed gesture. Restart it using the crown; if that fails, use Google’s button combination to force a reboot. The steps below separate those situations so you do not erase the watch or assume a hardware failure unnecessarily.

Start with a symptom check
Before changing settings, identify exactly what has stopped working. A wake gesture failing while the watch otherwise responds is a different problem from a frozen touchscreen.

| What you observe | First action | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| The screen wakes from the crown or another touch, but not from wrist movement | Turn off Bedtime mode, then inspect Settings > Gestures | The watch is running; a mode or gesture setting is the likely explanation. |
| Touch-to-wake and Tilt-to-wake both stopped, but menus still open | Check Bedtime mode and the available gesture controls | Wake behavior may have been disabled without the touchscreen failing. |
| Double pinch or Wrist turn is missing or does nothing | Confirm the watch model and Wear OS version | Those newer one-handed gestures require specific hardware and software. |
| The display is blank, frozen or ignores the crown and side button | Use the restart procedure | This is an unresponsive-watch case, not just a wake-setting issue. |
Do not infer a common failure rate or a single hardware cause from online anecdotes. Google does not publish a statistic for how often Pixel Watch gestures fail or how often each fix works.

Turn off Bedtime mode
Bedtime mode is the most important check because it intentionally disables the watch’s normal wake behavior. Google states that, while Bedtime mode is on, the screen, Tilt-to-wake and Touch-to-wake are turned off.
- Wake the watch with the crown or a button if necessary.
- Open Quick Settings by swiping down from the watch face.
- Find the Bedtime mode control and turn it off.
- Return to the watch face and test a wrist raise and a screen touch.
If the watch immediately wakes after Bedtime mode is disabled, nothing was broken: the mode was applying its intended behavior. If the icon is not obvious, scroll through all Quick Settings tiles rather than changing unrelated battery or display options.
Verify the gesture controls
Tilt-to-wake
Google places the Tilt-to-wake control under Settings > Gestures. Open that menu on the watch and confirm the option is enabled. Lock the screen, lower your arm, then raise your wrist in a normal watch-reading motion to test it.

Touch-to-wake and other available gestures
Check the controls shown on your particular watch rather than relying on a list from another model. Google’s accessibility gesture list is under Settings > Accessibility > Gestures. The exact controls and actions can vary, and Google notes that some can arrive or change through software updates.
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Choose Gestures to inspect standard wake and interaction options.
- Open Accessibility > Gestures as well, if you use accessibility controls.
- Read the action assigned to each gesture and switch on only the control you intend to test.
- Test one gesture at a time so you can identify which setting changes the behavior.
If a control is absent, that absence may be normal for your model or software release. Do not substitute a different gesture and assume the watch has failed; first establish whether Google supports that control on your device.
Do not confuse Battery Saver with Bedtime mode
Battery Saver changes display behavior, but it is not documented as disabling Tilt-to-wake. Google says Battery Saver turns off Always-on Display while keeping Tilt-to-wake enabled.
That means a watch in Battery Saver may look dark until you raise your wrist, yet the tilt gesture should still wake it. If raising your wrist works but the time is not continuously visible, check Always-on Display or Battery Saver rather than treating the gesture as broken. If the watch is in Bedtime mode, however, both the display and the wake gestures are intentionally off.

Check support for Double pinch and Wrist turn
Double pinch and Wrist turn are newer one-handed gestures, so their availability depends on both the model and Wear OS version. Google lists them for Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5 running Wear OS 6.1 or later.
| Gesture | Supported devices and software listed by Google | Where to manage it |
|---|---|---|
| Double pinch | Pixel Watch 3, 4 or 5 with Wear OS 6.1 or later | Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures on the watch, or the Pixel Watch app |
| Wrist turn | Pixel Watch 3, 4 or 5 with Wear OS 6.1 or later | Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures on the watch, or the Pixel Watch app |
To check the watch, open Settings > System > About and note the model and Wear OS version shown there. Then open Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures. In the Pixel Watch app, look for the watch’s gesture settings and compare the enabled actions with what you are attempting.
If you have an earlier Pixel Watch or a version of Wear OS below 6.1, a missing Double pinch or Wrist turn option is a compatibility limitation, not evidence that the sensor has stopped working. If the watch meets the listed requirements but the menu is missing, install any available system or app update, restart the watch, and check the menu again.

Use the crown as a simple diagnostic. If turning or pressing the crown opens menus, or another touch still registers, the operating system is responding and you should stay with the settings checks above. A single missed wrist movement does not prove the watch is frozen.

By contrast, a blank display, a screen stuck on one image, no response to touches and no response to the crown indicate an unresponsive watch. In that state, changing a gesture toggle is impossible; restart the watch instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Restart a responsive or unresponsive Pixel Watch
Normal restart
Google’s normal restart path is appropriate when you can interact with the watch:
- Press and hold the crown for about three seconds.
- Scroll to Restart.
- Tap Restart and wait for the watch to boot.
- After the watch face returns, test the crown, a screen touch, Tilt-to-wake and any enabled hand gesture.
A restart clears a temporary software hang without deleting your apps, settings or watch data. It does not, however, turn off Bedtime mode or enable a gesture that is disabled in Settings; recheck those items after the reboot.
Forced reboot when the watch will not respond
If the screen and controls remain unresponsive, Google instructs you to hold the crown and side button together for about 35 seconds or longer. Keep holding until the G logo appears, then release and allow the watch to start.
Best Value
Do not judge the result while the logo is still on screen. Give the boot process time to finish, then try the crown before testing wake gestures. If the watch repeatedly returns to a blank or frozen state, record what you see and move to support rather than repeating the forced reboot indefinitely.
What not to do first
Do not factory-reset a single disabled gesture
A factory reset is a later recovery option for broader software errors or pairing problems, not the first response to Tilt-to-wake or Touch-to-wake being disabled. Google warns that a reset erases apps, settings and data. It also creates the work of pairing and configuring the watch again.
Use the reset path only after the watch is otherwise unstable, the official restart steps have failed, and you have confirmed that any data you need is backed up or recoverable. A reset cannot make an unsupported gesture appear on an incompatible model.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not buy accessories as a settings fix
A charger, screen protector, replacement screen or repair tool does not re-enable a gesture that Bedtime mode or a software setting has turned off. Consider hardware service only when the screen remains unresponsive after the documented restart steps or when the watch shows persistent physical symptoms.
When to contact Google support
Contact Google support if the watch remains unresponsive after the normal and forced restart procedures, or if it repeatedly freezes and you cannot reach Settings. Support is also the appropriate next step when the watch meets the requirements for a gesture, the control is enabled, and the feature still fails after a restart.
Before contacting support, note:
- Pixel Watch model and Wear OS version.
- Whether Bedtime mode was on when the failure occurred.
- Which gestures fail: Tilt-to-wake, Touch-to-wake, Double pinch, Wrist turn or more than one.
- Whether the crown, side button and ordinary screen touches still respond.
- Whether a normal restart or the crown-and-side-button forced reboot changed anything.
Those details help separate an unavailable feature, a disabled setting and a wider hardware or software fault. Google’s official recovery guidance says to contact support when its restart steps do not restore an unresponsive watch.
A short decision path to keep
- Watch responds normally: exit Bedtime mode, inspect Settings > Gestures, and check Settings > Accessibility > Gestures for accessibility controls.
- Only Always-on Display is missing: check Battery Saver; Google says it disables Always-on Display but leaves Tilt-to-wake on.
- Double pinch or Wrist turn is unavailable: verify Pixel Watch 3, 4 or 5 and Wear OS 6.1 or later, then open Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures.
- Screen or controls are frozen: hold the crown for three seconds and choose Restart; if that is impossible, hold the crown and side button for about 35 seconds until the G logo appears.
- Still frozen or repeatedly failing: contact Google support before considering a factory reset.
Google Pixel Watch Help pages covering wake settings, Bedtime mode, accessibility gestures, newer hand gestures and unresponsive-watch recovery were accessed October 13, 2026. Those pages do not provide publication dates, and feature availability can change with the watch model and software version.
