First check whether the decline has pushed your portfolio away from its intended allocation, whether these funds still fit your goals and risk tolerance, and what they actually own. Then choose among rebalancing, changing the target allocation, or taking no trade. A market correction by itself does not answer that decision.
This is general U.S.-oriented investor education, not an individualized recommendation. The right action depends on your cash needs, time horizon, account and tax situation, complete holdings, and ability to tolerate further losses.

Start by locating the loss in your entire plan
A falling fund can look alarming while representing only a small part of your overall portfolio. Before opening a trade ticket, write down four numbers: the fund’s current percentage of your portfolio, its intended percentage, when you expect to need the money, and the largest loss you could tolerate without abandoning the plan.
Investor.gov describes asset allocation as a decision tied to time horizon and risk tolerance. It also distinguishes a change in allocation from rebalancing after market movements. That distinction prevents a recent price move from becoming an accidental change to your long-term plan.

Questions to answer before acting
- Is the money needed within a few years, or can it remain invested through several market cycles?
- Did your income, emergency reserves, debt, retirement date, or other financial circumstances change?
- Was the fund’s position deliberately chosen, or did it grow from an old contribution or an overlapping fund?
- Would another decline make you sell in panic, even if your written plan says to remain invested?
If the money is needed soon or your ability to withstand stock-market losses has materially changed, review the allocation itself. If nothing fundamental changed and the fund is merely below its target weight, the issue may be rebalancing rather than a new investment thesis.
Why small- and mid-cap funds can fall sharply
Small- and mid-cap companies generally have fewer resources than the largest companies. A fund disclosure filed with the SEC gives examples of risks these companies may face: more limited product lines or markets, less management experience, and fewer financial resources. Their securities may also be more volatile and less liquid. This is an issuer’s risk disclosure, not a claim that every fund or every correction will behave the same way.
| Risk characteristic | What it can mean during stress | What to check in your fund |
|---|---|---|
| Smaller operating scale | A company may have less room to absorb weaker demand, higher financing costs, or supply disruption. | Holdings, industry mix, balance-sheet exposure, and the fund’s stated investment objective. |
| Less trading liquidity | Some securities may be harder to trade quickly and can show wider price movements when buyers disappear. | Fund prospectus risk language, portfolio liquidity disclosures, and the fund’s trading volume. |
| Concentration | A narrow sector, country, style, or index can make a “diversified” label misleading. | Top holdings, sector weights, geographic exposure, and overlap with other funds. |
| Higher volatility | Daily losses can be larger than those of broad large-company benchmarks, without proving that the long-term plan is wrong. | Whether the position size is appropriate for your stated risk tolerance. |
These characteristics explain why a correction can feel worse in a small- or mid-cap allocation. They do not provide a reliable signal that a decline has ended or that a recovery will occur on a particular schedule. Vanguard states plainly: “No one can predict the timing or magnitude of a correction.”

Inspect what you actually own
A fund name is not a guarantee of diversification. Investor.gov warns that a mutual fund or ETF can be narrowly focused and recommends checking holdings for overlap, even when you own several funds.
Build a holdings map
- Download the most recent portfolio holdings for each fund from its shareholder or regulatory documents.
- Record the fund’s investment objective, benchmark or index, market-cap range, style, sector emphasis, and geographic scope.
- List the largest holdings and compare them across funds. The same company appearing in several funds is one form of overlap.
- Add your individual stocks, workplace-plan options, and other accounts. Concentration can be hidden when each account is reviewed separately.
- Calculate each fund’s percentage of the total portfolio, not just its percentage inside one account.
Two funds can have different names yet hold many of the same companies. Conversely, a broad fund may provide more diversification than a narrowly labeled small-cap or mid-cap product. The decision should follow the actual exposure, not the label.
Decide whether the target allocation still fits
There are two separate decisions: whether your desired mix remains appropriate and whether current market moves have pulled you away from that mix.

| Situation | Likely planning question | Possible response to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Goals, horizon, finances, and risk tolerance are unchanged; the funds are below target after the decline. | Has the portfolio drifted from the written allocation? | Consider rebalancing toward the existing target, including through new contributions. |
| Your time horizon shortened, cash needs increased, or losses now exceed what you can tolerate. | Is the old target still suitable? | Review and possibly revise the allocation before deciding how to trade. |
| The fund’s objective, holdings, fees, or concentration changed. | Does the investment still perform the role for which it was selected? | Analyze the fund and alternatives; do not treat a label or recent return as sufficient evidence. |
| You cannot explain the fund’s role or its overlap with other holdings. | What exposure did you intend to own? | Pause additional purchases until the portfolio is mapped and understood. |
Investor.gov and Vanguard describe rebalancing as restoring a portfolio toward a chosen mix. Rebalancing is not a forecast that the falling asset will outperform next; it is a risk-control decision. If your circumstances changed, mechanically restoring an old percentage may no longer be sensible.

Use a written rule rather than a headline or an intraday price. Investor.gov describes several approaches, including calendar reviews and preset allocation thresholds.
- Set the reference allocation. Write the intended percentage for small-cap, mid-cap, large-company, international, bond, cash, and other categories that matter to your plan.
- Measure the drift. Compare each current percentage with its target. A fund that fell may be underweight, while another holding may now be overweight.
- Choose the least costly method. Direct new contributions, dividends, or scheduled withdrawals toward underweight categories when that can restore the mix without selling.
- Use a threshold or schedule. Decide in advance whether you review quarterly, annually, or only when an allocation moves beyond a preset band. Avoid changing the rule because the market is uncomfortable.
- Estimate trading and tax effects. Check commissions, bid-ask spreads, redemption charges, and the tax consequences of selling in the specific account. Rules differ by account type and personal circumstances.
- Place only the trades needed to reach the target. Recheck the whole portfolio after execution, including other accounts and pending contributions.
- Document the decision. Record the target, drift, reason for the trade, expected costs, and next review date.
Investor.gov advises considering transaction fees and tax consequences before rebalancing. A financial professional or tax adviser may help identify ways to minimize costs, but neither can eliminate market risk or guarantee a result.

Should you sell the small-cap or mid-cap fund?
A sale can be reasonable when it implements a changed plan, removes unintended concentration, or addresses a fund that no longer does the job you selected it for. Selling simply because the price fell is a different decision: it converts an unrealized loss into a realized one and may leave you with a portfolio that no longer matches your written allocation.
A sale deserves closer review when
- Your financial goal or withdrawal date changed and the stock exposure is now too risky.
- The fund’s strategy, benchmark, costs, liquidity, or concentration no longer fits its assigned role.
- Several funds duplicate the same holdings and the combined exposure is larger than intended.
- You discovered that the position was speculative or accidental rather than part of your plan.
- You need cash and have no suitable lower-risk source available.
Holding may be consistent with the plan when
- The target allocation was deliberate and still fits your horizon and risk tolerance.
- The decline has only changed the fund’s weight relative to other assets.
- You have adequate emergency reserves and do not need the invested money soon.
- You can tolerate additional volatility without abandoning the strategy.
Neither list is a personal instruction. It is a way to test whether the reason for a trade is a durable change in your circumstances or only the latest market move.

When adding after a decline is—and is not—rebalancing
Directing a new contribution to an underweight category can be a practical way to move toward a target without selling. It is still an investment decision: the fund must be suitable, the position must not create unwanted concentration, and the money must not be needed for near-term obligations.
Best Value
“Buying the dip” is not a plan by itself. A correction can deepen, and no source cited here establishes a typical loss, recovery period, or reliable entry point. Vanguard’s warning about the unpredictability of a correction applies to attempts to time both the exit and the re-entry.
How to compare two funds before choosing between them
If you are considering replacing or consolidating funds, compare their roles rather than their recent rankings. Current comparative figures for named funds are not established here, so obtain the latest prospectus, holdings, and fee documents for the specific products you own.
| Comparison axis | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Objective and benchmark | Index or active strategy, market-cap definition, style, and reconstitution rules. | Two funds labeled “mid-cap” can have materially different exposures. |
| Actual holdings | Top positions, number of holdings, sector and geographic weights, and overlap with your other funds. | Reveals concentration that the fund name may hide. |
| Costs | Expense ratio, transaction charges, spreads, and any account-specific costs. | Costs reduce returns and can make frequent switching expensive. |
| Liquidity and trading | Trading volume, bid-ask spread, and the fund’s disclosed liquidity risks. | Important when markets are stressed or when you may need to trade quickly. |
| Portfolio role | The percentage assigned in your overall plan and its relationship to bonds, cash, and other equities. | A good fund can still be unsuitable at an excessive portfolio weight. |
| Time horizon | When the money will be used and how much volatility the plan can withstand. | Determines whether the allocation, not just the fund, needs revision. |
Common mistakes during a correction
- Reacting to one account. Review all accounts before concluding that you are underweight or overweight.
- Assuming several funds equal diversification. Overlapping holdings can create one large economic bet.
- Changing the target and calling it rebalancing. A new target should follow a change in goals, horizon, risk tolerance, or financial circumstances—not just fear.
- Ignoring implementation costs. Taxes, spreads, commissions, and redemption fees can materially affect a trade’s outcome.
- Using a recovery deadline. No cited source supports a guaranteed timetable for these funds to recover.
- Trading without a written rule. A calendar or threshold policy makes the decision less dependent on the day’s headlines.
A practical review worksheet
Complete this worksheet before placing an order:
- Purpose: What specific job does each small- or mid-cap fund perform?
- Target: What percentage belongs in that category across the entire portfolio?
- Current weight: What is the percentage after the correction?
- Drift rule: What threshold or review date triggers action?
- Overlap: Which securities or sectors appear in multiple funds?
- Liquidity: Could you trade or raise cash without relying on an uncertain price?
- Costs: What fees and tax effects would a sale create in this account?
- Capacity for loss: What future decline could you withstand while following the plan?
- Next review: When will you reassess, absent a genuine change in circumstances?
If you cannot answer these questions, gathering the missing information is a better first step than making a hurried trade.
When professional advice is appropriate
Consider an appropriately qualified financial professional when your portfolio spans multiple accounts, concentrated employer stock, complex tax lots, required withdrawals, or a near-term spending need. A tax adviser can address the consequences of selling specific lots, while an investment adviser can help test whether your allocation matches your objectives. Ask how the professional is compensated, what services are provided, and whether the advice covers your complete portfolio.
Professional input does not turn an uncertain market into a predictable one. Its value is in applying your facts—goals, cash needs, taxes, account rules, and risk capacity—to an explicit plan.
The decision in one sentence
When mid-cap and small-cap funds fall, first verify the exposure and the plan, then decide whether to rebalance toward a still-appropriate target, revise that target because your circumstances changed, or make no trade; do not let the size of the recent decline make the decision for you.
