When loneliness begins to affect your mood, sleep, routines, or physical wellbeing, choose one manageable way to connect and arrange appropriate support if the feeling is severe, persistent, or disrupting daily life. Loneliness is a painful experience, not evidence that you have failed socially, and one conversation will not instantly fix it.
Start with the smallest safe step
Do not wait until you have a perfect social plan. Pick one action that is possible today: send a short message, call someone, sit with another person, or ask a health professional for an appointment. A simple message such as “I have been feeling isolated lately—could we talk this week?” gives the other person a clear way to respond.

If contacting someone feels impossible, write down the name of one person, service, group, or clinician you could approach. You can make the next step later. The aim is to create a path toward support, not to force yourself into an exhausting social event.

Seek help sooner if loneliness is accompanied by worsening anxiety or low mood, disrupted sleep, major changes in routine, declining physical health, or thoughts of self-harm. If you may act on thoughts of suicide or self-harm, contact local emergency services or a crisis service immediately; the correct number and service depend on your country.

Loneliness is not the same as social isolation
The World Health Organization defines loneliness as a subjective, distressing feeling that there is a gap between the social connections you have and the connections you want or need. Social isolation is an objective situation involving too few relationships, roles, or interactions. They can occur separately.
You may have a partner, family, colleagues, or thousands of online contacts and still feel lonely. Conversely, someone may have little contact with others but not experience loneliness. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that social isolation can carry health risks even when a person does not describe themselves as lonely.
Loneliness can be occasional or persistent. NHS Every Mind Matters describes three useful patterns:

- Social loneliness: lacking friends or people who share your interests.
- Existential loneliness: feeling alone or unseen even when familiar people are nearby.
These categories are not diagnoses. They help you identify what kind of connection might be useful instead of assuming that every problem requires a larger social circle.

What loneliness can do to mental and physical health
Public-health agencies associate loneliness and social isolation with higher rates of depression and anxiety, cardiovascular disease and stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia or cognitive decline, self-harm or suicidality, and earlier death. These are population-level associations. They do not predict that a particular person will develop one of these conditions, and loneliness itself is not a medical diagnosis.
| Finding | Scope and date | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 15.8% of people globally report feeling lonely | WHO, 2025 | An estimate across populations, not an individual risk score |
| About 871,000 deaths each year associated with loneliness | WHO Commission on Social Connection, 30 June 2025 | An estimate of associated deaths, not a count of individually verified deaths caused by loneliness; WHO also expressed it as about 100 deaths per hour |
| About one in three US adults report feeling lonely | CDC, 15 May 2024; underlying data covered 39 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands | A US estimate from the cited coverage, not a global or fully representative figure |
| 29% higher heart-disease risk and 32% higher stroke risk associated with poor social relationships, social isolation, and loneliness | Valtorta et al., 2016, as presented by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), page reviewed 19 February 2025 | Reported associations from a study, not proof that loneliness directly caused an event in every person |
WHO reports higher reported loneliness among young people, particularly adolescents, than among older age groups, and higher rates in low-income than high-income countries. These are group patterns, not stereotypes or explanations for an individual’s experience. Factors such as bereavement, discrimination, illness, caring responsibilities, unsafe surroundings, transport, and financial limits can affect anyone.
Dr Vivek Murthy, co-chair of the WHO Commission on Social Connection and former US Surgeon General, said on 30 June 2025: “In this Report, we pull back the curtain on loneliness and isolation as a defining challenge of our time.” WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “In this age when the possibilities to connect are endless, more and more people are finding themselves isolated and lonely.” The statements describe a public-health concern, not a personal diagnosis.

| If the main problem is… | A potentially better first experiment | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Emotional closeness | A private conversation with one trusted person, relative, counsellor, peer-support worker, or clinician | Whether you feel listened to and safe, rather than merely surrounded by people |
| Shared interests | A recurring class, club, faith community, hobby group, or volunteer role | Whether the subject genuinely interests you and attendance is affordable and accessible |
| Too little regular contact | A standing weekly call, walk, meal, or message exchange | Whether the timing and format are realistic enough to continue |
| Feeling alone among people | A deeper one-to-one conversation or mental-health support to explore grief, identity, anxiety, or disconnection | Whether the setting allows honesty instead of requiring you to perform sociability |
This is a practical application of the NHS categories, not a clinical prescription. You can need more than one type of connection at the same time.
A step-by-step plan for reconnecting
1. Reach out to one person
Send a brief text, voice message, or email; call a friend or family member; or restart contact with an old colleague. Be specific about the next step: suggest a 10-minute call, a walk, or a particular day to meet. If the first person cannot respond, that is information about their availability, not a verdict on your worth. Try another safe contact or a support service.
2. Make contact repeatable
One-off events can feel encouraging and then leave a gap. A regular chat, shared activity, or group routine reduces the burden of deciding when to connect. Put the arrangement in a calendar and agree how to change it when either person is busy. Reliability matters more than a large number of contacts.
3. Notice when loneliness is strongest
For a week, record the time, place, feeling, and circumstance without judging yourself. Look for changes around a bereavement, breakup, move, study, new caring duty, illness, reduced mobility, job change, or loss of transport. NHS and CDC identify life changes, health challenges, and access barriers as circumstances that can contribute to loneliness. Knowing the pattern helps you choose a practical response, such as arranging company during evenings or finding transport to a daytime group.

4. Use local places and programs
Libraries, parks, community centres, schools, faith communities, volunteer organisations, and local groups can provide repeated low-pressure contact. WHO and CDC describe social infrastructure and community programs as supports for connection. Ask about fees, language, disability access, transport, safety, age requirements, and whether a first visit can be accompanied by someone you trust.
5. Use online contact deliberately
Online conversations can be meaningful when they are reciprocal, supportive, and focused. Choose a scheduled call, moderated group, or activity with people you know or can verify. Notice whether an app or platform leaves you calmer and more connected or more distressed and excluded. WHO has raised concern about excessive or harmful digital-media use, particularly among young people, but does not treat all online contact as harmful. Put the device aside when you are talking with someone in person so attention is shared.

A connection plan fails if it ignores the conditions of your life. Compare options by the kind of connection they offer, their cost, travel time, schedule, language, disability access, privacy, and safety. A free local group may be more useful than an expensive activity you cannot attend regularly. If mobility, chronic illness, caring duties, work hours, or transport limit you, ask about home visits, telephone groups, accessible venues, online alternatives, or community transport.

When professional support is the right next step
Contact a primary-care clinician, mental-health professional, or local support service when loneliness is severe or persistent, interferes with sleep or daily routines, or occurs with worsening anxiety, low mood, substance use, or other health concerns. A clinician can check for depression, anxiety, medical conditions, medication effects, hearing or mobility problems, and practical support needs without treating loneliness as a character flaw.
You can describe the problem plainly: how long it has lasted, when it is worst, what has changed, how you are sleeping, and what you have tried. Ask what counselling, group support, social-prescribing, rehabilitation, or community services are available in your area. Availability differs by country and service, so confirm eligibility, waiting times, cost, language provision, and accessibility.
For students in the UK
NHS Every Mind Matters advises checking your college or university’s wellbeing or mental-health service, students’ union, and institution website. It also identifies Student Space and the Mental Health Foundation as student resources. Check each service directly for current eligibility, opening hours, confidentiality rules, and referral requirements.

Get urgent help for immediate danger
If you are in immediate danger, have a plan to harm yourself, or cannot stay safe, contact your local emergency number, go to the nearest emergency department, or ask someone nearby to stay with you while help is arranged. If you are supporting someone else, listen without promising secrecy, remove immediate means where it is safe to do so, and contact emergency or crisis services. Crisis numbers and procedures vary by country, so use local official services rather than relying on an international number.
Build support that can last
After one successful contact, decide what made it workable: the person, time, location, format, or level of effort. Repeat that element and adjust what did not work. A useful network can include a close relationship, activity-based contacts, practical help, and professional care; no single person has to meet every need.
Review your wellbeing over several weeks rather than judging one conversation. Are sleep and routines steadier? Do you have someone to contact when distress rises? Is the activity safe, affordable, and genuinely supportive? If loneliness remains intense or your health worsens, move from self-help to professional assessment. The goal is not to prove that you can cope alone; it is to obtain the level and type of connection that your circumstances require.
