First determine which connection is failing: Bluetooth discovery, audio routing, or heart-rate data. Keep the earbuds charged and within about 10 meters (33 feet), place them in discovery mode, and pair them from Settings > Bluetooth. If music works but heart-rate readings do not, troubleshoot the companion or workout app, permissions, sensor fit and model compatibility separately; an audio connection alone does not prove that the iPhone is receiving biometric data.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Heart-rate earbuds can involve several independent links. The iPhone must discover and pair with the earbuds over Bluetooth. The operating system must then route audio to them. A companion or workout app may have to communicate with the sensor, and a health platform may need permission to receive the readings. A failure at one layer can look like a failure at another.

| What you observe | Most likely layer | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| The earbuds do not appear in the iPhone Bluetooth list | Power, distance, discovery mode or an existing pairing | Charge and power-cycle the earbuds, move them close to the iPhone, then enter the model’s discovery mode |
| The earbuds appear but pairing fails | Stale iPhone record, connection to another device or an incomplete reset | Forget the old Bluetooth record, disconnect other devices and pair again |
| The earbuds show as connected but sound comes from the iPhone | Audio output selection or an audio-session problem | Choose the earbuds as the playback destination while audio is playing |
| Music and calls work, but heart rate is absent | App permission, sensor setup, fit or workout-app compatibility | Check the app’s Bluetooth and Health permissions and follow the earbud maker’s sensor procedure |
| Nothing Bluetooth-related connects to the iPhone | iPhone Bluetooth or hardware issue | Contact Apple Support after confirming the accessory works with the maker |
Make one change at a time. That preserves a useful clue: if pairing starts working after deleting an old record, the problem was not necessarily the heart-rate sensor.

Charge and power the earbuds
Put both earbuds in their case or charger and verify that they have enough power to start. A low battery can prevent a model from advertising itself even when its indicator briefly lights. Turn the earbuds off and on using the manufacturer’s documented controls. Do not use a generic button combination: reset and discovery procedures differ between models.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Keep the devices close
Place the earbuds beside the iPhone while pairing. Apple’s iPhone Bluetooth guidance gives an approximate pairing distance of 10 meters (33 feet), but walls, bodies and radio interference can reduce the practical range. Pair in the same room, away from other active Bluetooth accessories when possible.
Put the earbuds in discovery mode
Powering on is not always the same as making a device discoverable. Use the earbud manual to enter pairing or discovery mode, usually indicated by a flashing status light or an audible prompt. Leave the case open or keep the earbuds in the position specified by the model while you search.
Check the iPhone Bluetooth screen
- Open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Make sure Bluetooth is switched on.
- Wait under the list of available devices for the earbud name to appear.
- Tap the exact model name and wait for it to move to the connected devices list.
If the name never appears, repeat discovery mode with the earbuds closer to the phone. If another phone or tablet is nearby, temporarily disable its Bluetooth or move it away so it cannot claim the earbuds first.

Forget the old iPhone record
A saved Bluetooth record can prevent a clean handshake after a firmware update, a device change or an interrupted pairing. In Settings > Bluetooth, find the earbuds under the device list, tap the information control next to their name, choose Forget This Device, and confirm. The wording can vary slightly by iOS release.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
After forgetting the device, do not immediately tap the old entry again. Put the earbuds back into their model-specific discovery mode, then select the newly advertised name under available devices. If the iPhone asks for a code, use the code in the manual rather than guessing.
Stop another device from taking the connection
Earbuds that are still connected to a previous iPhone, iPad, Mac or Android phone may not advertise themselves to this iPhone. Disconnect or remove the earbuds from that device, or turn its Bluetooth off while you pair. Some models support multipoint connections; others keep a single active host. The maker’s instructions determine which behavior applies.
Reset only with the manufacturer’s procedure
A factory reset can clear a corrupted pairing table, but the sequence is model-specific and may erase equalizer settings, ear-detection preferences or firmware state. Use the maker’s manual or support page and complete the reset before returning to the iPhone Bluetooth screen. Never assume that holding both earbuds for a fixed number of seconds works across brands.

A Bluetooth entry can say “Connected” while an app or call is still using the iPhone speaker. Start a song or podcast, open the system playback destination control, and select the earbuds. For a phone call, choose the audio button in the call screen and select the earbuds. If the earbuds are connected for calls but not media, check the model’s Bluetooth device options for separate media and call controls.

Test a short recording or call after music playback. This distinguishes a general pairing problem from an app that has selected the wrong output. Do not infer anything about heart-rate transmission from this test: audio and sensor data can use different software paths.
Give the required app Bluetooth access
Basic headphone audio often works without granting a companion app Bluetooth access. Apple states that many audio uses, including Bluetooth headphones and speakers, do not require app permission. A manufacturer’s app or a workout app may still need access for sensor configuration, firmware updates or data collection.
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth.
- Find the earbud companion app and any workout app that is supposed to read the sensor.
- Turn Bluetooth access on for the relevant app.
- Close and reopen the app, then reconnect the earbuds from inside the app if its instructions require that step.
Apps have been required to request Bluetooth permission for these functions since iOS 13. If an app is missing from the permission list, launch it and attempt the connection so iOS can present its request. A denial does not necessarily block music playback, but it can block sensor discovery or firmware management. Menu labels can change with iOS updates.

Treat this as a sensor-and-app workflow issue rather than automatically repeating Bluetooth pairing. Confirm that the workout has actually started, that the sensor feature is enabled in the manufacturer’s app or controls, and that the earbuds sit securely in the ears. Optical or electrical sensors can produce no reading when the fit is loose, the earbud is inserted at the wrong angle or the wearer is moving before contact is established.

Check the workout app’s compatibility
Heart-rate earbuds do not expose their sensor to every fitness app. The workout app must support the model’s data interface, and some models pass readings through Apple Health rather than directly to the app. Look for the earbud maker’s compatibility list and the workout app’s supported-device documentation. A successful Bluetooth connection is not evidence that the app can consume heart-rate values.
Use the documented Health permissions
For Powerbeats Pro 2, Apple documents in-ear heart-rate sensors that can work with Apple Fitness, Health and compatible third-party workout apps. For a third-party app, Apple’s documented flow requires HealthKit support and permission to read heart-rate data and workout information. In the iPhone’s Health settings, review the app’s permissions for those categories, then reopen the workout app and begin a supported workout.
Those requirements are specific to the Powerbeats Pro 2 workflow and should not be assumed for every heart-rate earbud. Another model may use its own account, app, data export or permission screen instead of HealthKit.
Check fit and connection when readings are poor
Apple’s Powerbeats Pro 2 guidance says to check earbud fit and connection when readings are poor, dim or absent. Reinsert both earbuds, use the supplied tip size that seals comfortably, and wait for the app to confirm sensor contact. If only one side reports, consult the model instructions to learn whether both earbuds must be worn or whether one sensor acts as the lead.

Distinguish a delayed reading from a failed reading
Some apps show heart rate only after a workout session is running or after several seconds of contact. Keep the workout screen open long enough for its first value, then compare the app’s live display with its saved workout record. If the live value appears but the history does not, the problem is data synchronization or Health permission rather than Bluetooth discovery.

Powerbeats Pro 2
Powerbeats Pro 2 is a documented example of earbuds that combine audio with in-ear heart-rate sensing. Apple describes use with Apple Fitness, Health and compatible third-party workout apps. The third-party path depends on a HealthKit-enabled app and the user permissions described above. Use Apple’s model instructions for sensor activation, fit and troubleshooting; do not use its workflow as a universal recipe for another brand.
Jabra Elite Sport
Jabra marks Elite Sport as discontinued. Its legacy support material includes iOS pairing guidance and identifies Jabra Sport Life as the app used for firmware updates. Owners should verify that the app remains available for their iOS version and that Jabra still provides the required downloads before relying on an old setup guide. A discontinued model may pair successfully while its companion app or cloud service no longer supports every function.

Any other model
Confirm three items with the manufacturer: iPhone compatibility for the exact model, the current firmware and app support, and the reset or discovery sequence. Product names can be reused across generations, so instructions for a visually similar revision may not apply.
When to escalate the problem
- Contact the earbud maker when the model will not enter discovery mode, its reset sequence is unclear, the companion app cannot find it, or the maker needs to confirm iPhone and workout-app compatibility.
- Contact Apple Support if Bluetooth cannot be turned on, the iPhone cannot connect to any Bluetooth accessory, or the accessory maker has confirmed that the earbuds work correctly.
- Seek app support when audio is stable but heart-rate values never reach one particular workout app, especially after permissions and model compatibility are confirmed.
Before contacting support, record the iPhone model and iOS version, earbud model and firmware, whether another device can pair, whether audio plays, and the exact app symptom. This prevents support from repeating audio-pairing steps when the actual failure is sensor data access.
Should you replace the earbuds?
Replacement is reasonable only after the connection layers have been tested. Compare the candidate model’s iPhone compatibility, supported workout apps, health-data permissions, firmware support and sensor-fit guidance. A newer heart-rate model may provide a clearer documented path to fitness data, but replacing earbuds does not prove that an iPhone Bluetooth fault is solved. If the iPhone cannot connect to any Bluetooth accessory, diagnose the phone first.
Quick Recap
A concise decision path
- Classify the symptom as discovery, audio routing or heart-rate data.
- Charge and power-cycle the earbuds, bring them within about 10 meters (33 feet), and enter discovery mode.
- Pair from Settings > Bluetooth.
- Forget the old device record and remove competing pairings if the first attempt fails.
- Select the earbuds as the active audio destination if sound remains on the iPhone.
- Grant Bluetooth access to the companion or workout app under Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth.
- For missing heart-rate data, verify sensor fit, workout start, app compatibility and any Health or HealthKit permissions required by that model.
- Escalate to the earbud maker or Apple according to which layer still fails.
