What to do when fibre internet is installed but your connection is slow

Start by separating a slow Wi‑Fi connection from a slow broadband line. Check that the router and, on full-fibre (FTTP) services, the optical network terminal (ONT) are powered; then run repeated tests, including one from a compatible computer connected directly to the router by Ethernet. If the wired result is consistently below the minimum speed in your contract, give the results to your provider and ask it to investigate. If wired speed is healthy but certain rooms are slow, fix placement and interference before buying equipment.

First check what “fibre” was installed

In the UK, “fibre” can describe two different access networks. Full fibre, or fibre to the premises (FTTP), runs fibre all the way to your home and normally has an ONT between the incoming fibre and your router. Part fibre, or fibre to the cabinet (FTTC), uses fibre to a street cabinet and copper telephone wiring for the final stretch. The technology affects the speed estimate and the equipment you should check, so confirm the service type in your order or contract. Ofcom explains the distinction in its broadband choice guidance.

Write down the estimated download speed and the minimum guaranteed download speed supplied when you signed up. Those figures, rather than a package name alone, are the proper benchmark for a fault report.

Do this 10-minute triage before changing anything

  1. Check every powered component. Make sure the router is on. If you have full fibre, check the ONT as well. Switch on any Wi‑Fi booster or mesh units. Look for warning lights, loose cables or a unit that has been switched off at a socket.
  2. Restart in a controlled order. Restart the router, ONT (if present), Wi‑Fi units and the device that is reporting slow service. Give each unit time to reconnect before testing again.
  3. Pause competing activity. Temporarily stop streaming, cloud backups, game downloads and automatic updates on other devices. Disconnect equipment that is not in use so one busy device does not obscure the result.
  4. Check whether one device is the exception. Test a second phone or computer. If only one device is slow, restart it and inspect its apps, updates, Wi‑Fi capability and background activity rather than assuming the fibre line is faulty.
  5. Check for an outage. Use your provider’s status page or app. A local incident can make a new installation appear defective.

These checks follow Ofcom’s troubleshooting advice for slow or unreliable broadband and Wi‑Fi (Ofcom’s broadband and Wi‑Fi help). A new installation does not guarantee that every later Wi‑Fi hop or household device is working correctly.

Measure the connection so you can locate the problem

Run repeated tests

Run a free speed test before making changes, then repeat it at different times of day. Speeds can vary with demand, so a single result is weak evidence. Record the date, time, device, connection type (Wi‑Fi or Ethernet), download and upload results, and any noticeable latency or “lag”. Latency matters for video calls and gaming even when the headline download speed looks acceptable.

Use Ethernet for the line test

For the clearest indication of the broadband service, connect a compatible computer directly to a router Ethernet port and test again. Wi‑Fi can be slowed by distance, walls, interference and the device itself; Ofcom describes a direct Ethernet test as the most accurate possible speed check (guidance). Use a cable and computer network port capable of the service speed. A Cat 6 cable is a practical option, but buying one will not repair a low wired result, and Cat 6 is not required in every setup.

Keep the computer close to the router for the first wired test and stop other heavy traffic. If the router has several Ethernet ports, use a normal LAN port rather than the separate internet/WAN socket used for the incoming connection.

Interpret the pattern, not just one number

What you observe Most useful next step
Wired speed near the router is good, but Wi‑Fi is weak in particular rooms Work through router placement, interference, device limits and coverage. Consider mesh only after the free checks.
Wired speed is low on repeated tests, at different times and with other activity paused Contact the broadband provider with the timeline and results. Ask it to check the service, router, ONT and line.
Only one phone, laptop or tablet is slow Investigate that device’s software, updates, Wi‑Fi standard and background traffic.
Results fall when the household is busy or at predictable busy times Repeat with other activity paused. If the pattern remains, include it in the provider report.

This is a diagnostic framework based on the causes and tests Ofcom lists; it cannot identify a particular household’s fault without the measurements.

If the wired result is healthy, improve Wi‑Fi for free

Reposition the router

Put the router in the open, off the floor and roughly central to the home. Avoid hiding it in a cupboard or behind furniture. Thick walls and objects can weaken the signal; Ofcom specifically identifies brick, water, metal, glass, radiators and fish tanks as obstacles to consider (improving your Wi‑Fi experience). If the router has adjustable aerials, try different orientations rather than pointing every aerial in the same direction.

Remove likely interference

Keep the router away from equipment that can interfere with wireless signals, including microwaves, baby monitors and cordless phones. Test the problem room after moving the router, because a speed test beside the router cannot prove that coverage is adequate at the far end of the house.

Use a cable where stability matters

A stationary desktop, television or games console can often use Ethernet for a steadier connection. Temporarily disconnect unused devices to see whether downloads, updates or streaming are consuming capacity. Keep router, fibre equipment, device operating systems and browsers current; leaving the router and ONT powered allows automatic firmware updates to arrive.

When a slow wired test is a provider fault

Your broadband provider is the customer’s fault contact even when another company owns or operates the physical network. Give the provider a concise record containing:

  • when the slowdown began and whether it is constant or intermittent;
  • the service type (FTTP or FTTC, if known) and the estimated and minimum guaranteed speeds;
  • each test’s date, time, device, Wi‑Fi or Ethernet connection and result;
  • whether the router and ONT were restarted and other traffic was paused;
  • whether every device is affected or only one; and
  • any outage message, warning light or unusual latency.

Ask whether support can test the line, router and ONT remotely; what repair action comes next; the expected timescale; and whether an engineer visit, replacement equipment or another step could carry a charge. Keep the case number and add new test results to the same record instead of opening disconnected reports.

Tell the provider about vulnerability

If someone relies on the connection for telecare, healthcare equipment or an alarm, say so when reporting the fault. Ofcom advises asking about priority repair and ways to stay connected during the repair.

Use the formal complaints route if needed

If support does not resolve the issue, follow the provider’s formal complaints process. Ofcom says that after six weeks without resolution, or after receiving a deadlock letter, a customer can take the complaint to an independent dispute-resolution scheme. Check the provider’s current scheme and contact details when you escalate, because participation and details can change.

Understand your speed promise and possible remedies

Ask for the original address-specific estimate and minimum guaranteed download speed if you cannot find them in the contract. Most providers follow Ofcom’s Broadband Speeds Code of Practice. Where a measured service remains below the applicable minimum and the provider cannot raise it within 30 calendar days, you may be able to leave without an early-exit penalty. This is not an automatic cancellation right: it depends on the provider, the contract, the code that applies and your evidence. Confirm the conditions with the provider before cancelling.

Automatic compensation is a separate remedy. Ofcom’s guidance describes covered cases such as a reported complete loss of service that is not fixed after two full working days and a missed engineer appointment. A connection that is merely slower than expected is not automatically one of those cases, so ask what rules apply to your incident.

“If your broadband speed is slowing you down, it’s never been simpler to switch. And you might even save money too, especially if you’re out of contract. We’ve pushed broadband companies to give you more accurate information about the speeds you’ll get, so you know what you’re signing up to.”

Selina Chadha, Ofcom Director of Connectivity, in Ofcom’s personalised speed estimates guidance.

When equipment is justified—and what to compare

Mesh for a coverage problem

If Ethernet speed is healthy but a large home has dead zones, a mesh system can extend coverage. Ofcom’s page published 19 February 2024 cited starter-pack prices from £60 to over £200; that is historical context, not a current quotation. Larger homes may need more units, but too many can make performance worse, so follow the maker’s placement guidance.

Mesh or router criterion Why it matters
Maximum connection speed It should meet or exceed the service and the capabilities of your wired ports.
Coverage in the rooms you use Plan unit locations; an extra unit cannot compensate for poor placement indefinitely.
Simultaneous-device capacity Check how it handles the number of phones, computers, televisions and smart devices in your home.
Provider and router compatibility Confirm whether it works with the provider’s router and whether support remains available.
Setup, optimisation and security Look for manageable configuration, automatic updates and current security features.
Total cost Include all units and any subscription or replacement expense, not just the starter pack.

Older routers, boosters and powerline adapters

An old router can limit wireless performance, so ask the provider whether an upgrade is available before buying a third-party model. A third-party router may be harder to configure and may not be supported; verify compatibility with your service. Wi‑Fi boosters can extend reach but may reduce speed. Powerline adapters depend heavily on the home’s electrical wiring, so results vary between sockets. Neither product fixes a persistently low Ethernet result from the provider.

If you decide to switch after escalation

Do not compare packages by advertised headline speed alone. Check the access technology (FTTP or FTTC), the estimate for your address, minimum guaranteed speed, total contract cost, planned price changes, contract length, early-exit charges and customer-service arrangements. Keep your test record until the old service is closed and the new installation has been measured by Ethernet.

A practical decision checklist

  • Router/ONT off or outage shown: restore power, restart and check the provider’s status information.
  • One device slow: troubleshoot that device and its background activity.
  • Wi‑Fi slow, Ethernet good: reposition the router, remove interference, pause competing traffic and use Ethernet for fixed devices.
  • Ethernet slow repeatedly: report the evidence to the provider and request a line, router and ONT diagnosis.
  • Below the contractual minimum: ask what the Broadband Speeds Code of Practice allows, including the 30-calendar-day improvement period and any applicable exit remedy.
  • Unresolved complaint: use the provider’s formal process, then the relevant independent dispute-resolution scheme after six weeks or a deadlock letter.
