If fiber internet is unavailable at your exact address, start by checking every fixed technology the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reports there, then confirm orderability and current terms directly with each provider. Cable, DSL or other copper service, fixed wireless, satellite, and—where cellular conditions permit—5G home internet or a hotspot can all be workable alternatives. The FCC National Broadband Map is a screening tool, not a guarantee of speed, indoor reception, affordability, or service quality.
Start with the exact service address
Internet availability can change from one street number to the next. A provider may serve a nearby home but not yours, or may offer a different technology or speed at the neighboring address. Do not base the decision on a city-level coverage claim, a friend’s experience, or a map pin placed on the wrong parcel.

Search the FCC National Broadband Map
- Open the FCC National Broadband Map and enter the complete street address, including the unit or apartment number where applicable.
- Select the fixed broadband view rather than relying only on the mobile coverage layer.
- Inspect the provider list attached to the selected location point. Record each provider, its reported technology, and the maximum advertised download and upload speeds.
- Use the map’s technology and speed filters to make sure you have not overlooked a cable, DSL, fixed-wireless, satellite, or fiber listing.
- Note the map’s displayed data-as-of date. Provider reports can change, and a result that is useful for one decision date may be stale later.
The fixed view can show fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, and fixed wireless. It reports information supplied by providers, not a technician’s measurement at your premises.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfirm that a provider will actually sell service there
A map listing is a lead to verify, not an order confirmation. Use the official address checker for every plausible provider or contact its sales channel with the exact service address. Verizon states that 5G Home Internet eligibility depends on the home address. AT&T’s address search can return fiber, IPBB, or Internet Air fixed wireless, and it notes that nearby homes can have different options or speeds.

Questions to ask before ordering
- Is the plan currently orderable at this exact address, including the unit number?
- Which technology and access method will be installed at the premises?
- What download and upload speeds are quoted for this address, and are they maximum, typical, or otherwise qualified figures?
- What is the regular monthly price after any introductory period?
- Are equipment rental, activation, installation, construction, or other one-time fees charged?
- Are there data allowances, overage rules, traffic management, or deprioritization terms?
- What installation work is required, and who performs it?
- What are the contract, cancellation, return-equipment, and relocation conditions?
- What support or remedy is available if the delivered service does not meet the plan’s stated terms?
Prices, speed tiers, data policies, and installation requirements are volatile. Obtain the current quote in writing or save the provider’s order summary rather than relying on an older advertisement.
Compare the alternatives that are actually available
No technology wins at every address. Compare an offer against the household’s real tasks—video calls, remote work, gaming, streaming, large uploads, security cameras, or basic browsing—and against its full cost and limitations.
| Technology | What to verify | What the FCC map does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Cable | Address eligibility, quoted download and upload speeds, post-promotion price, equipment charges, data policy, installation, and cancellation terms. | It does not establish the current local plan, actual peak-hour performance, or final bill. |
| DSL or other copper service | Whether the provider still accepts orders at the address and what speed it quotes for the specific line length and equipment. | A listed maximum is not a promise of the speed your line will deliver. |
| Fixed wireless, including 5G home internet | Address eligibility, indoor gateway placement, expected signal, data and congestion rules, equipment, and installation. | The separate FCC mobile map does not prove that a home-internet plan is orderable or that indoor reception will be adequate. |
| Satellite | Serviceability, quoted price, data and performance terms, equipment, installation, and any clear view-of-sky or weather-related conditions stated by the provider. | The map identifies satellite as a reported technology but does not supply provider-specific plans, prices, hardware, or installation details. |
| Mobile hotspot or phone tethering | Indoor signal at the location, hotspot allowance, throttling or deprioritization rules, device limits, and recurring cost. | Mobile coverage modeling is not a guarantee of indoor reception or home-broadband eligibility. |
Understand what each option means in practice
Cable
Cable is often the first fixed alternative to check when fiber is absent. Ask separately about upload speed; a plan with a high download number may have a much smaller upstream capacity, which matters for cloud backups, livestreaming, video calls, and sending large files. Compare the regular price—not just a promotional rate—and include gateway rental, installation, taxes, and any data-policy consequences in the total.

DSL or other copper service
DSL may be useful for light browsing, email, and modest streaming when no faster network reaches the property. Its quoted speed can depend heavily on the physical line and distance to network equipment. Have the provider qualify the speed for your address and explain whether the quote is an upper limit, an expected range, or a different measure. Do not treat a map’s maximum advertised figure as a household performance guarantee.
Fixed wireless and 5G home internet
Fixed wireless connects a dedicated home gateway to a nearby radio network. Eligibility can be capacity- and address-specific, so a carrier may accept one house and reject the next. Place the gateway where the provider recommends, ask whether an outdoor receiver or technician visit is required, and check congestion or deprioritization language. The FCC fixed map and a carrier’s home-internet checker answer different questions: the former reports provider availability, while the latter determines whether that provider will sell a particular plan at your address.
Satellite
Satellite can reach locations beyond wired and terrestrial wireless footprints. Before committing, get the provider’s current equipment and installation requirements, data policy, performance expectations, and any conditions involving a clear view of the sky or weather. Ask how latency affects activities such as interactive gaming, remote desktop work, and real-time calls. These are plan-specific details; the FCC map alone cannot provide them.

Mobile hotspot or tethering
A phone hotspot can bridge a short outage, a move, or a waiting period while fixed service is arranged. It may also be a practical primary connection for a light-use household if the indoor signal is strong and the carrier’s allowance fits your usage. Check the signal in the rooms where the connection will be used, not only outdoors, and read the current hotspot data, speed-management, and device-sharing terms. A mobile coverage map is modeled for outdoor or in-vehicle conditions and does not show indoor coverage.

Why the FCC map cannot guarantee a good connection
The FCC’s Broadband Data Collection Help Center states: “The National Broadband Map shows internet availability, not network performance, affordability, or adoption.” That distinction explains why a provider can appear on the map while the actual offer is too expensive, too slow for your work, unavailable to your unit, or unreliable at busy times.
The map displays technologies and maximum advertised speeds reported at a selected location. “Maximum advertised” is not the same as a measured speed, a minimum commitment, or a promise that every device in the home will reach that rate. Use the numbers to identify candidates, then rely on the provider’s address-specific quote and terms for the purchase decision.

What to do when the map shows nothing suitable
Check the location point and address details
Re-enter the address, include the apartment or suite, and confirm that the map’s selected point is on the correct building rather than a road, lot, or neighboring parcel. Review the data-as-of date before concluding that the area has no service.
Contact providers serving nearby locations
If a network appears on adjacent addresses, contact that provider and ask for a manual serviceability check. Explain that the map does not show a usable option at your point and request confirmation of construction feasibility, wait time, and any charges before treating an extension as realistic. Nearby availability does not establish that an extension is free or immediate.

Report an inaccurate listing or missing provider
The FCC allows consumers to challenge availability information they believe is wrong through the map’s challenge process. If a provider serves the location but is absent from the map, use the FCC’s missing-provider submission path. Include the exact address, the provider’s response, and any order or service evidence you are permitted to share. The agency can review reported information, but submitting a challenge is not an instant service order.
Best Value
Choose by household need, not by headline speed
Write down the activities that cannot fail and the times they occur. A remote worker may need dependable upstream capacity and stable latency more than an eye-catching download maximum. A family that streams several high-resolution videos may care about sustained capacity and data rules. A rural household may prioritize reach and weather resilience over low latency. A temporary renter may value easy installation and no long commitment.
- Work and school: verify upload speed, video-call stability, support hours, and equipment placement.
- Streaming: check the provider’s data policy and whether several simultaneous streams are practical at the quoted rate.
- Gaming and interactive applications: ask about latency expectations, congestion management, and service interruptions rather than judging by download speed alone.
- Large uploads and backups: compare upstream capacity and any data allowance before calculating how long transfers will take.
- Reliability-sensitive uses: ask what outage notifications, troubleshooting, and service credits the plan provides.
Control the true cost
Build a first-year and ongoing-cost view from the current provider quote. Include the regular monthly rate after promotion, equipment rental or purchase, activation, installation, construction, taxes, and any required add-ons. Record when an introductory price ends and what happens if you cancel, move, or return equipment late. A low advertised monthly figure can be unsuitable once those conditions are included.
Do not buy a generic router expecting it to create internet service where no provider network reaches the address. A router can distribute an existing connection; it cannot replace upstream access. Cellular gateways and satellite hardware are also tied to compatible service plans and coverage conditions.
Recommended Free Tools
Use this verification checklist before signing up
- Save the FCC map result for the exact address and note its data-as-of date.
- List every reported provider and technology, including non-fiber options.
- Run each provider’s official address checker and save the resulting plan name and eligibility message.
- Ask the questions about speed, price, data, equipment, installation, reliability, and cancellation terms.
- Compare total ongoing and upfront cost against the household’s actual uses.
- For cellular options, test indoor reception and confirm the separate home-internet eligibility result.
- For satellite or fixed wireless, document any line-of-sight, weather, placement, or congestion conditions.
- If the result is missing or wrong, submit the appropriate FCC challenge or missing-provider report.
Make the decision
When fiber is unavailable, the sensible process is address verification followed by a plan-level comparison. Use the FCC map to discover candidates, the provider’s own checker to establish eligibility, and the written offer to judge cost, data, equipment, installation, and performance expectations. If no option fits, preserve your evidence and challenge inaccurate map data while asking nearby providers for a direct serviceability review.
