Start by separating two situations: a specific danger that may happen now, and fear or trauma symptoms that continue after the danger has passed or come from news, memories, or uncertainty. If someone poses an imminent threat, move toward a safer location and contact the emergency or security service appropriate to your country. If the fear is disrupting sleep, work, travel, relationships, or self-care, use practical coping steps and arrange professional support rather than trying to manage it alone.
First decide whether there is immediate danger
When a threat is specific and imminent
Do not treat an active threat as an anxiety exercise. If you have credible information that violence may occur soon, prioritize physical safety: leave the area if you can do so safely, go to a place with appropriate protection or trusted people, and contact the local emergency, police, building-security, campus-security, or other service responsible for your location. Follow instructions from local authorities. The right action depends on the country, setting, and threat; there is no single emergency procedure that fits every situation.

- Keep movements purposeful and avoid confronting a threatening person if doing so could increase danger.
- Tell a trusted person where you are and what assistance you need, if communicating is safe.
- If you are responsible for a child, older adult, or dependent person, include them in your move to safety and follow the venue’s evacuation or shelter instructions.
- Once you are safe, seek medical attention for injuries and document information that authorities request, without delaying urgent care.
Fear can remain intense after an incident ends. That later distress is real, but it calls for a different plan: recovery support, safety planning for future situations, and assessment by a qualified professional when symptoms persist or impair daily life.

Recognize how fear is changing your functioning
Fear is part of the body’s fight-or-flight response. After a threatening or traumatic event, people can experience anxiety, sadness, anger, concentration problems, sleep disruption, or repeated thoughts about what happened. Responses differ widely: some people recover without lasting effects, while others develop ongoing distress. Fear by itself does not establish a diagnosis such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

The NHS describes several signs that fear or anxiety may be taking over ordinary life:
- Body: a noticeably fast or forceful heartbeat, dizziness, sweating, or breathlessness.
- Mind: persistent tension or worry, poor sleep, difficulty concentrating, expecting the worst, or intrusive memories.
- Behavior and relationships: avoiding places or activities, difficulty maintaining relationships, or trouble caring for yourself.
Make a brief factual record for a week: what triggers the fear, what you do to stay safe, what you avoid, how long symptoms last, and which parts of work, school, parenting, sleep, or social life are affected. This is not a self-diagnosis. It gives a clinician a clearer picture of the problem and helps distinguish a realistic safety concern from a pattern that continues even when you are safe.
Use manageable steps during the next hour and day
Calm the physical alarm
Try slow, comfortable breathing or another calming exercise for a few minutes, stopping if it makes you light-headed or more distressed. Meditation can be useful for some people. These techniques lower immediate arousal; they do not make an unsafe situation safe and are not a substitute for medical or emergency care.

Stay connected deliberately
Tell a friend, family member, health professional, or counsellor what is happening in concrete terms. You can ask for a specific kind of help: company on public transport, a check-in call, help finding an appointment, or assistance with childcare. A trusted person does not need to solve the fear; reliable contact can reduce isolation and help you notice when functioning is deteriorating.
Limit repeated exposure to frightening coverage
SAMHSA advises limiting news exposure while keeping routines and seeking support from trusted people. Choose one or two reliable times to check essential updates, turn off autoplay and breaking-news alerts, and avoid graphic material that you repeatedly replay. You can remain informed without making continuous threat monitoring part of every hour.
Build a safety plan that fits your circumstances
A useful plan is specific to the places and people in your life, not a generic list of gadgets or products. Write it down while you are calm and review it with someone you trust.
Recommended Free Tools
- List realistic situations. Note the locations, times, or contacts that create a genuine safety concern. Separate verified information from rumors, online speculation, and imagined scenarios.
- Identify safer options. For home, work, school, and regular travel, identify exits, staffed areas, trusted contacts, and accessible transportation. Follow the venue’s official emergency guidance where it exists.
- Set communication steps. Decide who receives a check-in, what phrase means “I need help,” and how you will communicate if a phone is unavailable. Do not publish sensitive location details publicly.
- Plan for essential responsibilities. Arrange backup care, medication access, transport, or workplace and school contacts if fear makes ordinary tasks difficult.
- Rehearse without frightening yourself. A short, calm review is enough. Repeatedly practicing catastrophic scenarios can increase vigilance rather than improve preparedness.
If the plan expands until you cannot leave home, sleep, or interact with anyone, that is a sign to seek professional help rather than adding more restrictions.

Choose support according to the problem
Different services answer different needs. Access, cost, language, waiting time, disability accommodations, confidentiality, and geographic eligibility all matter. Ask whether the provider has experience with trauma or violence-related concerns and what happens if you become unsafe.
| Situation | Possible first route | What it is for | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immediate danger or inability to stay safe | Local emergency or crisis service | Immediate safety assessment and connection to urgent help | Does this service cover my location? What should I do while help is coming? |
| Symptoms are persistent, worsening, or disrupting daily life | Primary-care clinician or mental-health professional | Assessment, discussion of treatment choices, and continuing care | Do you work with trauma or violence-related fear? What are the next steps and likely wait time? |
| You need confidential ongoing support | Therapist or counsellor | Regular sessions to understand triggers, manage distress, and rebuild functioning | What training and approach do you use? How do you handle an urgent safety concern? |
| You want shared experience and practical connection | Peer or support group | Support from people with related experiences, when the group is well-facilitated | Who leads it? Are participation, privacy, language, and online-safety rules clear? |
A primary-care clinician can be a practical entry point if you are unsure which service fits. A crisis service is designed for urgent distress, not necessarily for long-term therapy. A support group can complement professional care but should not be expected to manage imminent danger.
Know when professional help is warranted
NIMH advises seeking professional help when symptoms do not improve over time or begin to interfere with daily life. The NHS similarly recommends medical help when fear or anxiety is difficult to cope with or self-help is not working. Interference can mean missing work or classes, avoiding necessary travel, sleeping poorly, losing concentration, withdrawing from relationships, or struggling with hygiene, food, medication, or childcare.
Seek urgent help if you may harm yourself or someone else, cannot care for yourself, are experiencing a medical emergency, or believe you are in immediate danger. Use the emergency and crisis pathways available where you are. You do not need to prove a diagnosis before asking for help.

When arranging an appointment, bring your symptom record and explain:
- when the fear began and whether there was a specific event or ongoing threat;
- what you avoid and which responsibilities have become difficult;
- changes in sleep, appetite, concentration, physical sensations, or substance use;
- any current safety concern, injury, medication, disability, or cultural or language need; and
- what kind of help you can realistically access, including cost, transport, privacy, and appointment availability.
Understand trauma without labeling yourself
SAMHSA defines individual trauma as an event or circumstances experienced as physically or emotionally harmful or life-threatening that can have lasting adverse effects. Its trauma-informed approach emphasizes safety, peer support, trust, collaboration, and empowerment. In practice, that means you should be treated as a partner in decisions, told what to expect, and given choices where possible.
NIMH notes that most people recover from reactions after traumatic events. Recovery is not a test of character, and a delayed reaction does not mean you are exaggerating. At the same time, persistent symptoms deserve attention even when other people involved in the same event seem unaffected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor young people affected by community violence, CDC guidance dated 28 July 2025 discusses trauma-informed psychosocial support or counselling to help process traumatic experiences, manage distress and grief, and develop coping strategies. That youth-focused guidance should not be treated as an outcome claim for every adult or every kind of fear. A child or teenager showing major changes in sleep, behavior, school attendance, or sense of safety should be connected with a qualified child-health or mental-health professional.

Use crisis resources carefully and by location
In the United States, SAMHSA lists call or text 988 for crisis support and a Disaster Distress Helpline for distress connected with disasters and emergencies. These are U.S. resources; eligibility, service scope, and availability can change. Verify current details through official government or service websites before relying on them. Readers elsewhere should use their country’s emergency number, crisis line, health service, or local violence-support organization.
Do not assume a number seen in a forwarded post works in your country or for your situation. If you are unsure which service to contact, a local health service, emergency operator, or trusted professional can help route you.
Avoid responses that increase danger or isolation
- Do not confront, track, or investigate a threatening person yourself when authorities or trained security staff can handle it.
- Do not let continuous news checking, graphic videos, or online arguments replace sleep, food, movement, and human contact.
- Do not use alcohol or other substances as your main way to numb fear; they can impair judgment and sleep.
- Do not force yourself into a feared situation without a safety assessment and appropriate support.
- Do not dismiss symptoms because someone else had a different reaction, and do not assume that fear alone proves a specific disorder.
The practical goal is proportionate safety plus restored functioning: respond decisively to a real, immediate threat; use small stabilizing actions when you are safe; and obtain professional support when distress persists, is hard to manage, or limits daily life.
