If that complete loop is producing less useful progress than you can make elsewhere, keep your character moving through campaign quests, zone stories or nearby objectives while you reassess the queue and your Chromie Time timeline.
There is no universal level or experience-per-hour figure at which questing always beats dungeons. Queue length, your role, group pace, character level, selected timeline and the current patch can change the result. The reliable solution is to measure your own complete runs, then choose the route that matches your goal.

Why a dungeon can feel slower even when the instance is fast
A damage dealer can spend eight minutes clearing a dungeon and still lose more time than expected to a 20-minute queue, a slow replacement, travel to the entrance, a wipe or a group that pauses between pulls. A healer or tank may enter almost immediately, so the same dungeon can be efficient for one character and poor for another.
Dungeon Finder also depends on who is queuing at that moment. The available pool changes with region, time of day, level range, role demand and the expansion timeline selected for your character. A route that worked yesterday may be unattractive after a level-up or patch change.

Questing has its own costs: travel, reading or skipping objectives, fighting alone and moving between chapters. The point is not to assume quests are faster. It is to compare the progress you actually receive for the time you spend.
Measure the complete dungeon loop before abandoning it
Use a simple note on your phone or a spreadsheet for three to five attempts. Record the clock when you press the queue button and when the group is fully finished, including any return trip or required quest turn-in. Do not measure only combat time.

After several runs, compare the whole cycle with the same amount of uninterrupted questing. Blizzard’s official guidance does not provide a standardized break-even time or an XP-per-hour ranking, so your notes are a personal decision aid, not a universal statistic.

- Continue the campaign chapter currently offered by your character.
- Complete zone-story quests clustered near your present location.
- Gather nearby objective items, kill quest targets or finish bonus objectives.
- Turn in completed quests and accept the next steps before rejoining the queue.
- Use travel time to repair, clear bags and read the Dungeon Finder requirement message.
This is a practical combination of activities, not a claim that every quest awards more experience per minute. If the queue pops, accept it and let the group decide the instance pace. If the search remains poor, you have still advanced your character instead of accumulating idle minutes.
Check Chromie Time before changing your leveling plan
Chromie Time lets eligible characters select a past-expansion campaign. Blizzard describes the selected campaign as scaling to the character, and Dungeon Finder offers dungeons associated with that selected timeline. That connection explains why the queue may suddenly show a different set of instances after you speak with Chromie.
Changing the timeline
- Find Chromie in the capital-city location used for your character’s Chromie Time access.
- Review the available expansion campaigns and select the one whose story and dungeons you want to play.
- Open Dungeon Finder and read the current dungeon list and any eligibility message before queuing.
- If the list is unsuitable, return to Chromie and choose another timeline, or return to the present timeline when that option is offered.
Blizzard says the queue can offer to expand its search to other timelines when it takes too long to find a suitable group. Read that prompt rather than assuming the expansion shown first is the only option.

Level-specific eligibility
Blizzard Support states that a character below level 60 who is leveling through a Timewalking Campaign can queue only for dungeons appropriate to the selected campaign. To look for dungeons from another expansion, the support guidance says to change the timeline with Chromie. The support result has changed over time, so use the restriction message shown by your live Dungeon Finder as the final authority for your character.

Do not switch timelines solely because a queue is slow without checking what you will lose. A new timeline can change the available dungeons, quest objectives and story setting. It may solve a group-availability problem while making your current campaign less coherent.
Choose the route that matches your goal
There is no single best answer for every leveler. Decide what progress means for this character before comparing activities.

For a character leveling with friends, a slower personal queue may be irrelevant because the party can enter together. For a solo damage dealer, the same content may be less attractive if most of the session is spent waiting. Evaluate the activity you are actually playing, not an abstract average.
A practical decision procedure
- Define the immediate objective. Write down whether you want a level, a campaign chapter, a dungeon quest, a specific reward or simply a social group activity.
- Start the queue and a safe quest route. Choose nearby objectives that do not strand you if an invite appears.
- Record the complete cycle. Include queue, acceptance, travel, group formation, combat, wipes, pauses and completion.
- Check the timeline. Confirm that Chromie Time is set to the expansion you intend to play and that Dungeon Finder lists the expected dungeons.
- Respond to the queue result. Accept a workable group, continue questing during a search, or read the expansion-search prompt if Dungeon Finder offers one.
- Review several attempts. Compare actual character progress and idle time, not just one unusually good or bad run.
- Commit for the next session. Keep the timeline and route that fit your objective; revisit the choice after a level, role change, patch or major population shift.
New and returning characters need a current route check
Blizzard’s current player update describes different routes for new and existing players. Existing players retain the option to use Chromie Time to choose the expansion they want to play first. The update describes a new-player leveling campaign that leads through the Dragonflight story to level 70, followed by an accelerated War Within story experience for new players leveling from 70 to 80.

That same update says these additions arrive with the 11.2.7 content update later in 2026. Because the rollout date, eligibility and exact thresholds are patch-sensitive, check the live game’s character-creation, campaign and Dungeon Finder screens rather than relying on a remembered level requirement. A guide written before the update may describe a route that no longer appears for a new character.
Returning characters can also encounter a different route from a newly created character. Check which campaign is offered, whether Chromie Time is available, and which dungeons Dungeon Finder actually permits before rebuilding your leveling plan around older instructions.

The timer keeps growing
Continue nearby campaign or zone quests and watch for a prompt to expand the search to other timelines. If the proposed expansion does not fit your objective, decline it and keep questing. After several sessions, compare the complete cycles; do not set a universal minute threshold based on someone else’s region or role.
The dungeon list is not the one you expected
Check Chromie Time first. A selected campaign changes the dungeons Dungeon Finder offers. If the character is below level 60 and using a Timewalking Campaign, the current support guidance says the list is limited to that campaign’s appropriate dungeons. Change the timeline with Chromie only after deciding that a different story and dungeon pool are acceptable.
The queue pops but the run collapses
Count wipes, replacements and pauses in your next measurement. A nominally short queue is not efficient if the group repeatedly disbands. You can leave the queue, resume nearby quests and try again later when role demand or player population is different.
You level out of the planned range
Open Dungeon Finder again after gaining levels. Eligibility can change as the character moves through a timeline, and an old quest or guide may not describe the current list. Follow the live restriction message and the campaign options offered by Chromie.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Timing only the boss fight: this ignores the queue and all non-combat delays.
- Assuming questing always wins: a fast group, dungeon quest or desired reward can make a run worthwhile.
- Assuming the queue is global: role, region, level and timeline determine the pool you are actually entering.
- Changing timelines without checking the story: the switch can alter both quest progression and dungeon eligibility.
- Trusting old level thresholds: Blizzard’s new-player and returning-player routes are changing with current updates.
- Using a single run as proof: one unusually fast group or one abandoned instance is not a stable comparison.
Examples of sensible pivots
Solo damage dealer with repeated long searches
Queue for the selected timeline, then complete nearby story objectives during the wait. Record several full cycles. If the character consistently spends most of the session idle and has no dungeon-specific objective, continue the campaign until the queue or timeline becomes more attractive.

Tank with immediate groups and a dungeon quest
Keep running if the group forms quickly, completes reliably and advances the stated goal. There is no reason to abandon a productive loop merely because another player’s damage-dealer queue is long.
Player who wants a particular expansion’s story
Select that expansion with Chromie, verify its dungeons in Dungeon Finder and quest through the campaign. If the queue offers to expand to another timeline, decide whether faster grouping is worth leaving the chosen story.
New character after the 11.2.7-era changes
Check the route presented in the live game. If the character is on the described Dragonflight-to-70 campaign or the accelerated 70–80 War Within route, follow that route’s current objectives unless a specific dungeon or group goal justifies a detour.
The bottom line
When dungeon runs stop being efficient, do not look for a magic level at which everyone should quit. Measure the complete queue-to-completion loop, quest during unavoidable waits, verify Chromie Time and Dungeon Finder eligibility, and choose the route that advances this character’s actual goal. Recheck the decision after a level, role change or patch because the queue and campaign options are not fixed.
